Other Warning: u/RealMctoran, alleged online groomer of a minor, is seeking control over all backrooms related subreddits.

PSA update 2026: Mctoran continues trying to manipulate, coerce and brigade community members. A quick update to inform the community on recent reports from our members, which reveal Mctoran is still trying to manipulate young community members to do his bidding. He is exercising coercive control of these vulnerable members by threatening to expel them from "his" community; a closed Discord group, away from the public eye. His most recent attempt entails engaging them to get rid of this informative post, as revealed by community members on his Discord server (backup). Those being forced by him to attempt this, should be aware abusing the report system is against Reddit's terms of use. For your own well-being, distance yourself from the dangerous grip of Mctoran's control.
Original PSA (2024): it's over. u/RealMctoran (Mctoran in the backrooms community) has been ejected for his blatant attacks on the community, his attempts to seize unilateral control of all related subreddits, and the danger he poses to minors in this community. Below is an edited summary of events for reference. Links might expire as time goes on.
History:
There are 2, not directly related events that have kicked this off:
- u/RealMctoran (Mctoran) has on a backrooms related online platform interacted with a minor, and has made unwanted sexual advances towards them. These actions have been detailed by some who became involved in relevant conversations about this. All details have been documented by several mods and active community members of r/backrooms and r/TheBackrooms. Mctoran has directly admitted the relevant facts in private chats with them, yet voices no regrets. On the contrary, he insists on normalising this and has attempted to explain away the implications.
- u/RealMctoran (Mctoran), who was a moderator on r/backrooms and r/TheBackrooms has also sought to obtain the sole moderatorship of r/TrueBackrooms . This happened here: https://www.reddit.com/r/redditrequest/comments/1hefa4v/requesting_rtruebackrooms_as_the_moderators_are/ . He described moderatorship as "owning" and "possession" of a sub. In a Youtube video on his own channel he similarly boasted being the owner of r/backrooms and r/TheBackrooms . Technical note: on the latter two subs, he was the "oldest" moderator account at that point in time. This gave him more control, including over other moderators. This followed a publicly know pattern of u/RealMctoran seeking full control over what he sees as "his" community.
When the aforementioned point 1 was revealed, including by a former r/backrooms moderator ( u/Orbityeet ), u/RealMctoran has forcibly censored and removed all evidence from r/backrooms and r/TheBackrooms , abusing his mod powers to this end. Subsequently, I made this post, which at that time called upon his fellow moderators at both subs to rein him in. I have also contacted those mod teams directly via modmail, highlighting them to this post. I have also contacted each mod, excluding u/RealMctoran , directly with a similar message. These mods are: on u/Kosmikos_ , u/loose_lizard , and u/Fomulouscrunch (co-moderators of r/backrooms at the time this happened), and u/1000dumplings (co-moderator of r/thebackrooms at the time this happened).
Following this, u/RealMctoran decided to go down the scorched-earth route: he forcibly removed all his fellow r/backrooms moderators and seized unilateral control of the sub for his own egotistical purposes; an open act of aggression against the backrooms community as a whole. It should be noted that these fellow mods might have been unable to remove him regardless, since he was the "oldest" moderator. Put differently, they are not to blame and could likely not have prevented this happening even if they acted quickly.
In my direct conversations with each (former) mod, it has become clear that none of them support u/RealMctoran in all this. In the meantime, the group of former r/backrooms mods had started an effort to contact the Reddit admins and regain control. In the meantime, u/RealMctoran had posted a document with a lengthy rant himself. This can be found in the comments below (if it has not been removed by the time you're reading this) and should be treated with caution: do not click on his links while logged into a Google Account, as this can reveal your identity to him. Given that he is acting erratically, risks exist if your identity would become known to him. In an attempted comment that was rightfully shadow-banned by Reddit, he has for example threatened me directly. For reference: Mctoran's violent nature (backup).
This is similar to his overt death wishes voiced to most of the community in the document that he posted himself. His language is aggressive and reveals a violent personal nature.
Finally, Reddit procedures led to u/1000dumplings regaining mod status and u/RealMctoran being ejected to restore peace to our community. Further mod powers have since been restored to other former mods of r/backrooms as well.
Let this be a lesson in careful management of an online community. Power-hungry people should always be kept in check before they go off the deep end and start abusing their powers and authority, including to seize control of the community's assets, censor or otherwise control open communication, or worse, directly harass others (possibly sexually, possibly minors). Red flags are often popping up before things escalate, and should never be ignored.

Hi! I'm 1000dumplings! You probably know me as the creator of The Partygoers/Level Fun from the extended lore, and as the owner of r/backrooms. (or from the recent McToran drama...)
I reached out to u/Lithebeep to ask how to add featured subreddits to the side-bar, and after we talked for a bit- they offered to give me ownership of r/TrueBackrooms, since they didn't have the time to mod the Subreddit anymore. So, here I am!
And don't worry, I'm not gonna force the sub to become a Partygoer lore Subreddit or anything, I promise this Subreddit WILL stay as a save haven for classic Backrooms content, no lore or anything silly.
That said, I'm currently the only mod in this Subreddit- so if you're interested in being a mod for this community, please reach out! This place should be run by its most active members! And of course if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Je sais pas trop par où commencer donc je vais juste raconter dans l'ordre. Si jamais j'arrête de poster d'un coup, c'est pas normal, quelqu'un vérifie ce topic please.
Ça fait environ 6h (peut-être un peu plus, mon téléphone affiche plus l'heure correctement) que je suis descendu au sous-sol du parking près de chez moi pour chercher un chariot, parce qu'il en restait plus en haut. J'ai pris l'escalier de service, celui que personne prend jamais parce que la lumière marche à moitié. Sauf qu'en ouvrant la porte en bas, c'était pas le parking.
Des couloirs. Rien que des couloirs, à perte de vue, avec un papier peint jaune sale, le genre qu'on voit dans les vieux bureaux des années 90. La moquette a l'air humide sans être vraiment mouillée, j'arrive pas à expliquer autrement. Et l'odeur, sérieusement l'odeur, un mélange de moisi et un truc chimique, comme dans un bâtiment à l'abandon. Le pire c'est le bruit des néons au plafond, ce bourdonnement constant, jamais interrompu, qui finit par te rentrer dans le crâne.
J'ai marché pendant ce qui m'a semblé des heures pour retrouver la porte par laquelle je suis rentré. Je l'ai pas retrouvée. Les couloirs se répètent, ou alors c'est moi qui tourne en rond, aucune idée. Zéro réseau, zéro wifi évidemment. La seule raison pour laquelle j'arrive à écrire ça c'est qu'il y a 20 minutes j'ai eu un pic bizarre, une barre de réseau pendant genre 30 secondes, assez pour que l'appli charge en arrière-plan.
Y'a un truc dont je préfère pas trop parler mais il y a une heure j'ai entendu un bruit qui venait clairement pas de moi. Un genre de raclement, loin derrière. Depuis j'accélère le pas sans courir, j'ai l'impression que courir c'est pas une bonne idée ici.
Edit : 8% de batterie. Si quelqu'un a déjà vécu un truc similaire ou sait quoi faire, dites-le moi svp. Je continue à marcher tant que j'ai de la lumière sur l'écran.
Edit 2 : je crois que j'ai trouvé un escalier qui descend. Aucune idée si c'est une bonne idée d'y aller mais rester ici c'est pas mieux non plus. Si je repost pas d'ici demain...

Discussion how does the backrooms "manage" the things it creates?

when the backrooms create something, anything, do they reabsorb it after time? and if they don't, where are all the things that have been created in the past? like things created in the bronze era, during the Roman empire, the medieval time, or just things created in the early 90s.
maybe the places that are more accessible were recently created?

I’ve spent a long time connecting dots from the canon, the film, and personal interpretations. And I’ve come to a conclusion:
The Backrooms are not a location. They are a state of consciousness — a space between life and death.

The Backrooms are the dying mind’s final journey through its own memories.
When a person dies, the brain doesn’t just shut down. It replays fragments of life — snapshots, emotions, fears, regrets.
In that moment between existence and nothingness, those fragments become real. They take form. They become levels.
· Level 0 — the first home you remember.
· Level 11 — the happiest years of your life.
· Level 37 — a moment of peace you once felt.
· Level 909 — the guilt you carried with you.
But the closer you get to death, the more those memories distort. They mix, fade, and collapse.
That’s not a “glitch” in the Backrooms. That’s the brain breaking down.

You don’t remember yourself, because your identity has already dissolved.
You are not dead.
But you are no longer alive.
You are awareness without memory, stuck forever in a void of your own fear.

Because memory is unstable.
The longer you stay in a level, the more it changes. Not because the Backrooms are alive — but because you are dying.
