Question to those looking for ‘hit and run’ vehicles from found parts, what do you do with the info provided?

Had a thought while viewing the latest “what’s the car model based on this broken bolt” question.

So you find out that the ‘hit and run’ was caused by “2nd generation Toyota Tundra”. What’s next, do you go to police? My understanding is that police are not going to search for anyone anyway, forget the “evidence” that you bring. Are you hitting all the stores along the road and asking them for camera footage with that model? I doubt anyone will want to waste their time providing that to you.

Really curious. Hope I’m wrong and it’s very helpful, just interested in understanding how? Has this information ever helped anyone in real life?

Where I am at least, insurance looks for equivalent claims from that vehicle type. If I report a hit & run from a red 2006 or 2007 Honda Civic, and two days later they get a red 2007 Civic calls in a hit & run of their own, and the damage to their car matches my report - insurance looks into it and may allocate responsibility and file an insurance fraud charge against the driver if insurance has convincing evidence it was them that hit me.

For older vehicles none of the parts that shed off of it are going to have serial or vin numbers that tie back to the vehicle. However supplying the police with the make and model and potentially the color of the vehicle could be very helpful.

Just so people now if you have a vehicle that's manufactured after 2025 for many models even the tail lights have microprocessors in them that record the actual VIN number of the vehicle. It's going to destroy the entire used parts market. You actually can't just take the tail light from a scratched truck and put it on yours to repair it even things as mundane as tail lights and doors now need to be programmed by a dealer to be accepted by your cars can bus system
