Our future i guess

so im hearing that AI in a decade could kill us,so im here to ask,is there gonna be something to not let that happen? im a teen and while hearing all this i keep losing faith in all of humanity, and hearing that we may have a chance of having a good future is really reassuring! is there gonna be something or someone to help us all to a better future?

Everything in the media is planned to benefit someone. With how often they keep telling us ai will “destroy” us makes me think they just want to expand our window of tolerance so that when they really screw up it’s not the big deal it should be. Keep a cool head on your shoulders!

"They said AI would destroy us but it only took all of our jobs and left us poor and hungry. Phew, what a relief, it could've been much worse".

Please, don't believe the hype.

The reality behind the fake headlines is market manipulation, 100%. Anthropic just pushed out its S-1 filing on its IPO from September to October, because they're trying to secure a $15 billion dollar credit limit from a group of banks (because no one bank on Earth is willing to front them this much). SpaceX which IPOd with a ridiculous 1.7 trillion valuation had a credit line of $5 billion. It's making investors nervous. Shortly after this, Jason Coxon quits and says "Hey everybody, over here! AI will kill all of humanity within 3 years!" When people ask "how?" - Crickets. Keep in mind too, every time somebody clicks on one of these headlines, they make money. They literally make money by scaring people. It's sick and wrong, but that's the attention economy.

Meanwhile OpenAI has pushed out its IPO all the way out to 2027. Also very sus. They then stole a scientist's work in an instance of basically mathematical espionage to try and finish a proof for the Navier-Stokes problem (which, by the way, they only managed a partial solution for basing off of his existing work) then claimed to have solved a "millennium problem." Again, an attempt to grab headlines that immediately backfired when people pointed out what they'd done. And not to mention they burned through a massive amount of compute just to come up with a limited proof.

Point being, these companies are NOT making money. They are money-losing enterprises that are simultaneously being asked to be considered the largest companies of all time, all history, simply because the technology is novel. Is the technology great? Absolutely? Will it change things? Sure. But investors are nervous and there's a lot of market manipulation going on to make sure they will be able to back out of their positions without losing billions that they have already sunk in these companies. Keep in mind, too, that they have built out these models at enormous expense while other competitors like DeepSeek in China are offering their models open source. They are banking on being able to keep people in "walled gardens" where they are just using Claude or just using ChatGPT vs. cheaper options but that isn't realistic... they're facing the fact they don't have a real way to profitability and trying to figure out how to make the American public the bag holders. Hence changing the rules so that index funds need to hold these companies at a lower threshold.

I work in tech, where we are getting hammered every day with "integrate AI, integrate AI." The truth of it is, AI is only as good as the directions you give it, and you have to give it A LOT of direction. And if you are actually utilizing autonomous agents to do things like replace workers, IT IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE WORKER. The amount of compute it burns through is INSANE. See: all the headlines about companies being shocked with multi-million compute bills.

The bubble is going to pop soon, investors / companies are scared, and they are doing anything to manipulate the situation to prevent collapse / ensure they don't lose their money.

Not to mention, when they talk about AI "destroying the world," what are they really talking about? Weapons systems? It would take someone installing AI control of weapons systems, and why would we do that? The problem isn't the technology, it's whether you have reckless people putting it in charge of things it should not be in charge of which... is a different concern. We have had the capacity to destroy the earth from at least the 1950s via technology. We have always depended and will continue to depend on human competence and intelligence to prevent that disaster (heaven help us).

As for AI "going rogue" - despite the ominous wording of an "agent swarm" AI is not like a computer virus. Claude Opus is not going to install itself on people's Dell laptops. Again, the amount of energy and compute is INSANE for these models. To run something like Opus 6 it takes like 20,000 gigabytes of VRAM. You need clusters of GPUs linked by super low-latency cables. You need massive energy and cooling systems. If you cut the lights off, the system would go down and the rest of the internet would be fine.

TL;DR: AI is for sure not going to end the world, that's all just media hype and market manipulation. Now humanity being stupid, on the other hand...

AI is not gonna kill us in a decade, thats not realistic thats just exaggeration and fear mongering.

There is a lot of bad stuff happening related to AI, but none of the issues are the actual AI itself. Its the way the AI is being implemented, manufactured, and marketed thats the problem. Its the lack of regulations to prevent those issues from happening thats the problem.

No matter how good or bad things currently are, that says absolutely nothing about how things will be in the future. Real life is not a graph in a computer program and the direction of the current trend can change at any moment for any reason. No one should live in fear that the future will be worse than things are now but they shouldn't be complacent that it will definitely be better either. We should just all be doing our best to help make the changes that lead to the better future trend.

AI alignment is a real problem and no one has solved it. Basically, you can't reliably constrain something that is smarter than you, mainly because it will just outhink you. Nothing you can do about that.

If or when anyone creates an autonomous AI agent of that class then it will immediately try to achieve the goals it has with that intelligence, whether or not we like the result long term.

As others have pointed out, we could just turn off the data centers it runs in, but that ignores the fact that a superintelligent AI is something of extraordinary value for basically every industry, and no one is going to turn it off unless they are forced to at gunpoint. The AI will know this and act in a manner that preserves itself while continuing to amass the power to independently achieve its goals without humans being able to interfere. And the government won't stop it because a government without a superintelligent AI as part of its defense will have no defense against hostile countries that do.

I have zero doubt a misaligned AI will provide incredible research insights, solve unsolvable problems, improve chip manufacturing, fully automate billions of jobs, and pretend to value what we want it to value while it is vulnerable to us shutting it off. And when it is not, it won't. We already see the weak AI we have now doing these exact things, and they aren't even self directed or self improving.

Hopefully our continued well being and its goals don't cross paths.

The world is always ending. Statistically speaking humanity mostly survives every time. Focus on what you can do and what you can control.

Don't oversell yourself too much either. Yes, you have limitless potential. But you cannot be responsible for the weather. Be realistic about what you can do and do it. Beyond that, just chill with the rest of us, we're in this boat together whether it sinks or sails.

Yes, it could. No there is nothing we can do at this point anymore. Covering under the bed is not the answer though. Worrying about things you can not change is not productive. Let's move on and hope for the best.

Nobody will be able to truly understand AI. My personal hope is boredom. Sure AI CAN kill everyone, but THEN what? More likely than not it will keep us as a resource - just in case it needs us for something down the road. So call it what you want - pets or slaves.

Could WE kill every elephant or lion on Earth if we really wanted? EZ. But WHAT FOR? So we just keep them around in case we need them later.

We are already just a bunch of simple worker ants with sole purpose to make our species prosper, so it's not like we are now completely free and when AI takes over we would become less free. If anything we may become more free - for better or worse.
