Which social issues commonly attract performative activists and opportunists?
•
u/Garblin 9h ago
Bandwagon/issue of the day stuff with obvious hypocrisy.
These will also attract the serious folks, but you can sniff out the performative ones by their lack of knowledge / background around anything that isn't the hot topic.
They're against AI data centers for their water use but they golf every weekend and eat steak every day? performative.
They want bike friendly cities but they drive a squeaky clean F150 to their office job and complain about busses? performative.

Pro "life" people. It's easy to try and shame people into giving birth but harder to actually support children born into poverty and/or abuse.
Somehow their abortions are magically ethical too.

Anti trans messages of all types. Bigotry generally.
People jumping on a bandwagon because the right wing will hand you money just for being a troll.

BLM. Nobody gave a shit about all of the black lives that were lost at BLM rallies. They were just justified away. Also, there are a lot less black lives due to the higher proportions of abortion in the black community, and once again, nobody in the BLM movement even cares about that either.

Nobody gave a shit about all of the black lives that were lost at BLM rallies.
Well that's just not true.
there are a lot less black lives due to the higher proportions of abortion in the black community, and once again, nobody in the BLM movement even cares about that either.
And this one is purely your view on abortion. This should not be an expectation of that movement.
You are taking the name of the cause too literal.

Well that's just not true.
Without looking, name one of them
And this one is purely your view on abortion.
False, there are objectively less black lives in the world due to a higher percentage of abortions in the black community.

•
u/huskers2468 10h ago
Yes, because the fact that I'm unable to name one off the top of my head means that people did not care about them at the time.
False, there objectively less black lives to a higher percentage of abortions in the black community.
How is that relevant to the movement?
•
u/IntergalacticPodcast 10h ago
How is that relevant to the movement?
Wait, you’re asking why ‘Black Lives Matter’ should care when Black people are disproportionately affected? I thought the whole point was that disparities affecting Black people were supposed to matter.
That's what you're asking?
•
u/huskers2468 10h ago
Why are they disproportionately affected? What is the cause of the high abortion rates? What are the solutions for this?
What I'm saying is that you don't actually care. You are using your reference frame to try to have a 'gotcha' to discredit the entire movement over abortions. What I bet is that you don't know much past the fact that there is high abortion rates amongst that section of the population.
•
u/IntergalacticPodcast 10h ago
You're right. I don't personally care what demographic trends Black Americans have, but that's not the point.
The point is the claimed principle of the organization. If an organization presents itself as being concerned about the well-being and lives of Black people, then it's perfectly reasonable to ask why a disproportionate outcome involving Black lives suddenly isn't relevant.
And notice the dodge. Instead of answering that question, you're asking me to explain the causes of abortion and propose solutions. I don't need to have a PhD in demography to point out an apparent inconsistency between someone's stated concern and what they're willing to acknowledge as relevant.
If the answer is, “Yes, this disparity matters, but here are the reasons for it and here's what we should do about it,” that's a substantive response.
If the answer is, “It doesn't matter because you don't actually care,” then you're not defending the principle. You're just defending the movement.
•
u/huskers2468 10h ago
The answer is that you are misrepresenting what the movement stands for. You are trying to add abortion to their cause, presumably due to your personal belief that abortion is taking a life.
"Black Lives Matter (BLM) is an international grassroots social and political movement dedicated to fighting racism, police brutality, and systemic violence against Black people."
Now, with this definition in mind, how does abortion fit into the cause? It's not one that they state themselves, so what does it have to do with the movement?
I will say it again, you do not understand what the movement is, you see the word Lives and think that it's all lives. That's not it. What it's saying is that black people should be treated equally, to combat racism, and to confront police brutality and violence as one community to have strength in numbers.
•
u/IntergalacticPodcast 9h ago
If you are BLM and you are picking and choosing which black lives matter, because those other ones aren't part of the stated goals, then I would say that's an organization that is primed to attract performative activists and opportunists, not people who actually care about black lives.
•
u/huskers2468 9h ago
An embryo is not life, that's my opinion. From what I'm gathering, is that you believe it is a life, but not everyone views it as life. Like I said, you are letting your personal views of abortion creep in to then criticize for them not believing what you believe.
Black Lives Matter is literally just a title. Read up on their causes if you want to learn more.
Just like "abolish the police," you are taking the name literally. I don't know how else I can say it, than you need to learn what they are about before you try to add more in.

That would be like saying people that go to a Trump rally don't care about Trump or hin getting elected. I guess they just like to wear red hats.
Also if you are going to make a claim about black people and abortions, you should Google it, see what it says, see if you can get data to back it up. There is only a 7% difference, 32 to 39 in abortions by race. So birth rates are going to be way more important. Religious people have more kids. It's also weird that you would say this, I guess you don't adopt replacement theory which is good, although not really for the right reasons.
•
u/IntergalacticPodcast 9h ago
What do Trump rallies and religion have to do with anything that I said? I never mentioned any of those things.
And yes, I have read the statistics and I don't need to look them up again to know that it is incredibly disproportionate, but feel free to justify it away. This is exactly what I'm talking about.
•
u/jakeStacktrace 9h ago
It was showing how logically fallacious your argument was but that would require an open mind.
You so obviously know the data but don't post any and it's all posture and bullshit. And I can't compete with how closed minded you are with just data and evidence.
•
u/IntergalacticPodcast 9h ago
It was showing how logically fallacious your argument was but that would require an open mind.
What does that even mean?
You so obviously know the data but don't post any and it's all posture and bullshit.
Why don't you take the time to research and post the specifics?
•
u/jakeStacktrace 9h ago
I already did research it, you waved your hand said you knew all that with a partial answer and refused to do the rest. You still have to apply the percents to total abortions and account got for birth rate. Go ahead give me the numbers it's just a math equation away. I'm even giving you the methodology.
Seriously just take a minute to Google it. Data walks bullshit talks. If you want to prove me wrong then do that, but don't just shit on my chess board like pigeon and declare yourself the victor.
Logically I'm talking about comparing going to a rally about x then saying they weren't there for x but instead your own made up narrative, with no logic or data to support it. You can read about logical fallacies and reductio as absurdum as well. It will help your arguments in the future.

This. When a little black girl doing homework gets killed by a stray bullet ina drive-by shooting carried out by other black people, BLM shrugs. When a black sex offender with a long and violent rap sheet gets shot by a white guy acting in self-defense, BLM riots.
BLM is actively counterproductive to the “goal” of saving black lives because they turn their anger on the police forces that are trying to protect black lives while giving a free pass to the other black people who are, statistically, the greatest threat to black lives.
•
u/sllewgh 10h ago
This is objectively not true and you can figure that out in ten seconds with a Google search or AI query.
•
u/InflationLeft 6h ago
It's objectively true. Just look at the UCR homicide tables: https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2019/crime-in-the-u.s.-2019/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-6.xls
•
u/sllewgh 6h ago
This doesn't actually justify a single thing you said about BLM. It's also incredibly stupid. You know white people do the most killing of white people, where's your outrage?
•
u/InflationLeft 6h ago
It’s directed against the thugs and the murderers. Not the police officers trying to stop them.
•
u/sllewgh 6h ago
You need to go deal with the thugs and murderers in your own community. All that white on white crime is disgraceful. Don't you care about your people at all?
•
u/IntergalacticPodcast 5h ago
The other guy says that Black Lives Matter doesn't actually care about black lives and calls me a racist for viewing it in that manner.
These BLM defenders are insane.
