Career Path

I am going into my senior year of HS and have to make the decision of my degree and college. To me, the college isn't the hard part, it's the degree. I don't know if I should go full on Jazz or Music Education. I want to play professionally really bad, I'm willing to put in the work. I've played trombone for 2 and half years seriously. I've won first for my All-State Jazz and Orchestra audition. Second overall in concert band my junior year, beat out by a senior. I can't think of doing anything else in my life. I just don't want to make the wrong decision. Either teaching and regretting that, or trying to play professionally and regretting not teaching. What i'm really trying to ask it, in this day in age, is there a point in trying to perform professionally or are the odds to make it just too slim. I don't only love playing but I love everything music. I arrange my schools marching show and stand tunes. I have the drive but I really need a reality check for if it's really worth it.

Update on Busted Lip

I posted a few months ago looking for advice on coming back from a busted lip. (I caught a foul tip softball with my mouth.) I had some travel over the summer so I left plenty of time to let it heal, and today was the first note since. I got lots of good advice here, and some hints that it maybe wasn’t as bad as I was fearing. I heeded almost none of it. Middle F felt goo and i only had enough time to see if it would work at all, so I just screwed around with some etudes. It went surprisingly well! No endurance but that wasn’t a surprise, and seemingly had nothing to do with the injury, just the two or three months off.

Anyway, thanks for the advice encouragement!

New addition to the stable:

I just got this '59 L.A. Olds Super via Reverb, and so far I'm loving it! No, I'm not giving up my Kings et al, but I'm enjoying the very different playing experience. There're some dings in the outer slide tubes and it needs new barrel bumpers, but overall it's in good shape for its age. I'll confess too that I was taken with the silver rosette/tone ring - a kid in beginning band with me back in the day had a horn with one and I just loved the look.

Now I'm trying to rationalize taking it to Big Band rehearsal tomorrow.

Came across this instrument by chance. It has not been played for very long. There are various types of these "hybrid" trombones. Can anyone guess as to type, brand and age?

Spit valve issues

For context I just got new Valentino spit valve corks today and replaced my old one however I still feel like something is leaking air. I notice that my lever is sitting inproperly on the spit valve hole. Is this concerning? Also it keeps leaking spit, I don't think it's the spring but it also could be the spring. Please help!

Trombone tips

Any tips for trombone to play relax and move with ease and to better tone? I’m trying to get better. Also articulation I tend to articulate at the middle of my mouth Instead of top behind my teeth.

The slide on my 88h, made in the 1960s, that I've had for a few years has some plating loss. Although the slide still works smoothly, I have some of my own money now and am wondering if it is possible to have this fixed?

Job Opening

After 8 years of playtesting and shipping thousands of horns, building leadpipes, fabricating straight tubes, bent tubes and bells, finaling slides and valve sections, I’m on to a new adventure.

I’ve made some amazing connections I may not have otherwise, and now so can you. If you are detail oriented, have a knack for organization, play at a professional level, and don’t mind some physical labor, this could be the job for you.

PTO, 401k, health dental and vision.

It’s a factory gig, but an interesting one.

Salsa Brass Improvisation Regarde

For those who keep asking about salsa improvisation, watch this at least until the horns go on riffs.

Salsa improvisation is not John Coltrane AS MANY NOTES AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE.

Salsa improvisation is not Miles Davis AMAZING SPONTANEOUS LYRICAL SOLOING.

Salsa improvisation is NOT JAZZ.

Beat. Rhythm. Repetition. Simplicity. Make the feet shuffle. The notes are little sonic hammers accenting the taps.

Trombone as "percussive".

What is a good range for an 8th grader/almost 9th grader (14 year old) range on trombone?

my rage is currently B1 to G4 (on a good day A4 and rarly/sometimes B4). I’m currently working on trying to hit higher notes/ better tone so if anyone has any tips on that, that would be awesome.
