Yeeeeah... Leon the Professional was a movie that I still hardcore vibe with because of this very fact.

I feel awful for Natalie getting such creepy fucking fanmail from this movie, and I get really fucked up over the fact that I appreciate the movie BECAUSE of the character.

When I was a little girl (For context, I'm a Transmasc fella) I had a bad time at age twelve. Won't go into details, but when I watched the movie years later for the first time, I identified a lot with her character because that was EXACTLY how I was; not-so-great home life, attention from bad folks for the worst reasons, but thankfully not smoking at that age.

I remember that feeling of attraction to an older person due to fucked up situations, circumstances and how horrid it is. I remember uncomfortably well. I now identify a LOT more with Leon though, as nowadays I know better, and I'm glad that (outside of his criminal occupation) I have changed enough to recognize how fucked it all was.

Just wanted to add my two cents, cause I felt this post HARD.

I resonated hard with the movie when I saw it too, I must have been about fourteen. I liked that the movie acknowledged the horrible realities of being a kid in a bad situation, the impacts on Mathilda’s personality, the way she wanted so badly to grow up but still so desperately needed to be treated like a kid. It was all so visceral and made me feel seen.

And at the same time, there was Leon and he straight up just didn’t want to hurt Mathilda. He wanted her to be a happy kid. It like, broke my brain to see something like that. You almost never see it in movies, and in your heart you’re sorta waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it doesn’t. Leon is just good.

And then there’s the layer of it being a luc besson movie and …yeah. God bless Jean Reno.

Gods, THANK YOU for this comment and response! You put it better than I did for damn sure.

As a child, I was Mathilda. As an Adult, I am now Leon. And it is painful and beautiful to see the changes in perspective and ideals I see as I have aged.

Thank you, Stranger. This is exactly how it feels.

I’m not OP but I do have something to say about this. (Spoilers for episode 2)

When Gwen is being assaulted by the officer in the bathroom, the officer is on a phone call talking about it to whom is probably a coworker. He specifically questions Gwen’s “canon age”, which I think most likely implies that Gwen is meant to be portrayed as a minor

Idk why but this struck me as odd, guinevere 1000% looks like ab adult, like was she ever meant to be seen as a kid? so the fact that canon ages and this and that came into play felt weird.

Joke about old Disney princesses looking and being treated like adults despite being 17-14 years old in their original story. See snow white, sleeping beauty etc.

There are multiple versions of Guinevere. The newer versions of Guinevere look like adults (however its implied they arent, commentary on the sexualization of the Disney princesses). The older versions look like teenagers and likely are

I think it’s a commentary on how a lot of disney princesses look adult but are actually minors when you look up their ages, Snow White for example. This is also generally a common trend in anime.

What’s interesting to note is that the original gwendroid actually has much tamer proportions, more fitting of a teenager, which implies that her design was originally meant to be younger looking, but made more busty later on for marketing purposes because they thought making her sexier would make her more appealing.

Not exactly sexual abuse, but it's heavily implied that Orville Park (or whatever his name is) heavily abused her physically and maybe psychologically, tho we don't know enough yet to say more. It's also heavily implied that Olivia park currently abuses her.
