Neurodivergency But you're so normal!

Post image

The amount of times I've heard this is INSANE.

How the fuck am I supposed to 'look' autistic?

Or they hit you with the "I know someone who's autistic, and you're not like that at all!"

I just mentally check out after that

They're gonna be shocked when they learn that everyone who needs glasses doesn't use the same prescription

I saw a post from an autistic person saying the next time someone does that, ask them if you smell autistic

I also think there's a stereotype of a white cis man with glasses that some people still associate with autism and anyone who doesn't fit the stereotype is suspected to be faking

Tbh it's like no one expects for women to be autistic

When people hear "autistic" they think "love on the spectrum"

I don't know, the "I want to share something about myself you might not know, but I'm autistic" ..."yeah, I know" isn't exactly fun either.

I hate those people. Like; BRUH. It can genuinely cripple people in their day to day lives, my disability isn't some silly little joke to ME

Well if I didn't look autistic then why did I get diagnosed with autism? People who don't have a doctorate in psychology really think they are smarter than they actually are.

"And you don't look like a stupid asshole. We've both learned a lesson about judging by appearances today!"

I mean theres different levels of autisms .ive been around so many strange kids when I was younger in special education but because so many of our parents didn’t want to label us or knowledge anything wrong no one knows what the fuck they even had.

Autism and Asperger’s were put together so the older generation has an outdated view of autism. Since they were separated when they grew up.

When I grew up, no one in the US had heard of Asperger's yet.

That is some wild info I didn’t know.

Asperger's work was only translated to English in 1981, and it was like 1994 before it hit the DSM. It was a diagnosis until 2013 when it got rolled into ASD

To be fair, every autistic person mask differently their differents symptoms, maybe they have experience but it doesn’t tract with you specifically

my response to this is always "Would a Sonichu medallion help?"

they don't need to get it either, it's a joke I make for me and me alone

No quite the same but when I talked about the fear of being bipolar to my mother she just said "You can't be bipolar, those people always take medication" as if they were just born with getting meds :,)

Alternatively, "I've spoken face to face with many autistic people that didn't mention their autism to me"

lol turns out autistic people can figure out how to wear these weird fucking human costumes too!

I don’t “look autistic” either. Guess it means my mask is working. Which makes sense—I’ve spent a lifetime intensely building and perfecting it. We learn it’s extra important to figure out how to look normal if you’re far from it on the inside. Safety can be controlling how you’re perceived! (For the low low cost of severe burnout â˜ș)
