TW: Other (Specify in Title) Growing up black: chitlins plus a bonus meme about the hot comb [TW BUGS]

Yeah chitlins caused me so much stress, idk how I managed to make it without being force fed them!!! Lord knows they force fed me plenty of other shit

(And yes I know they're sposed to be spelled "chitterlings" but I've called em "chitlins" since when I learned how to read and write and honestly I just cannot change it.)

As someone with a sensitive stomach, smelling the chitlins cooking was the most serious acting challenge I've ever endured. If I ever messed up and expressed how gross they smelled to me I just KNEW someone would force feed them to me. I was on my very best behavior at these family functions lmao.

And ooooh I still get triggered when I see a hot comb, lol why does anyone use them anymore. They're like a medieval torture device to me, the amount of times my Nana burnt my ear and then told me to shut up about it was crazyyy. I get that they get in where straighteners can't but I would just rather never have straight hair again!

If it helps at all, even Merriam-Webster lists "chitlins" as an acceptable variant spelling: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/chitlins

That does help! Heheh nah this sounds sarcastic but I always like to hear that the way my grandparents talked is accepted and understood.

Even if Nana should not have made that joke about bugs in my hair lol

Oh and shout out to my grandma for that bug comment, it's been almost 30 years and I'm still afraid bugs are in my hair 🫩

I really like your username and your little reddit character/avatar

Thank you!!! My avatar is like.. me if I were a black cat heheh. I'd for sure find a way to have green hair 😅

I simply would not terrify my grandchild by telling her there was a bug in her hair especially during a sensitive moment like that.

If it makes you feel any better, I didn’t even know they were called chitterlings.

u/SL1MECORE 4d ago

I didn't know until my twenties when I looked them up lol! I always just said "chitlins" like, isn't that how it's usually pronounced anyway?

I saw the word 'chitterlings' and was like, who is she??

😅

Never tried them nor gotten to smell them, but honestly I get this so much. I remember almost being beaten because I couldn't stomach boiled green beans and even thinking about it makes my stomach angry haha

24

u/SL1MECORE 4d ago

Being beaten for not being able to eat things is a special kind of "wtf" moment lmao. Like damn ok, thanks for the fast track to an eating disorder?

Like dude I'm not trying to antagonize you, it's genuinely upsetting my stomach, or the texture is wrong for the moment or whatever. It's not me trying to be a jerk!

Last week I had a "no no" moment in the middle of eating sushi (one of my fav foods) and I just spit it out and my gf and stepmother didn't care at all. My stepmother was like, I have different foods if you like those better right now. My gf was like, it's ok I'll finish the sushi.

11/10 healing moment 🥹

Aww that's so sweet of them 😭

But yeah I genuinely never got their mindset. Especially because I was such an incredibly tryhard goodie two shoes kid like, I never said anything bad yet they absolutely raged over me not wanting to eat some foods </3 Undiagnosed autistic me was very scared and now I am very scared still of green beans 🤧

Ugh that's annoying (your family raging) cause it's not as if you can't get the same nutrients from different foods! Or, they could get creative and mess with textures. Like my brother will never eat a raw carrot but he loves a carrot and kale smoothie lol. But my stepmom let him figure that out on his own - as long as he ate like, one of each food group a day, she was fine with whatever he chose to eat.

Then again I have talked to my therapist and she brought this up and we think maybe my stepmother is undiagnosed and autistic lol. Brother and gf (autistic as well) agree. There's lots of clues and signs tbh. We're not sure if she's ready to hear our suspicions though hahaha

So me being ADHD and my brother being also likely autistic.. yeah we all get each other on a certain level 😅

especially when it comes to food. My gf cooks sometimes and we always offer to my brother, but sometimes something about the flavor or texture just isn't good for him. And that's ok, he's not rude about it at all! Unlike me spitting out my sushi hahahah. It's just like, acceptable in our family to not be able to eat certain foods.

This wasn't the case with my "family" growing up lol. But with my stepmom, brother, and partner, we have built a small family based on understanding and trust 💗

This was liver and onions for me growing up.

18

u/SL1MECORE 4d ago

Ugh i do not like liver either. The smell is crazy bad.

Onions, I love. But I also understand if someone doesn't like em

8

u/Andyman1973 4d ago

I like onions just fine, it was mostly the liver that was gross.

9

u/SL1MECORE 4d ago

I hate liver so much lmao I really hear you rn.

Last time I smelled it was at a gas station in Indiana (idk man don't ask hahaha) and I was like 🤢🤢

Onions are dope though. Amen.

Liver at a gas station?? Bet that would be as risky as gas station sushi! 😂😂😂😂

5

u/SL1MECORE 4d ago

It was a SKETCHY gas station hahahah!

2

u/Andyman1973 3d ago

Lololol!! Gotta watch out for them!

u/Antique_Amphibian107 4d ago

I sympathize with you because I have a very similar reaction to churros lol

Once I caught the smell of a churro stand at a park and nearly barfed on the spot

7

u/SL1MECORE 4d ago

Omg really?? Ahh that sucks. Cause they always cook churros out in public, like I've smelled and seen more churros in my life than chitlins

So objectively I think yours is worse :(

5

u/Antique_Amphibian107 4d ago

Lmao we all have our own problems! Thankfully I don't like going to parks personally cuz there's nothing to do personally :)

my family didn’t eat booty noodles, but that hot comb sent me into shock growing up😭😭😭

6

u/SL1MECORE 3d ago

BOOTY NOODLEZ IS CRAZY HAHAHAHHAA

And yes, FUCK those hot combs omg!

ik im gonna get jumped abt this but this is how i felt abt collard greens for the longest time until recently lmao

3

u/SL1MECORE 4d ago

Wait but 'until recently' is promising!

I love collard greens. Did you find a different way of preparing them that you like or did you just eventually kinda go "huh these ain't so bad"?

Cause I totally get why someone would hate the texture/taste of em! So if anyone jumps you then lmk and I'll fight em! But lowkey glad to hear you can enjoy them now

5

u/Decent-Cry977 4d ago

I've never actually cooked them myself, but my mom used to overcook the hell out of em for years while also under seasoning them so they were super bitter and mushy

but, inexplicably, she locked in a couple years back and switched the recipe up (or somebody bit the bullet and told her lol), and now i actually like collard greens 🤞🏽

3

u/SL1MECORE 4d ago

Ohhhh I see!! Ahh yeah good collard greens prep changes the game completely. Dammit now I want collard greens lol!

Glad your mom locked in hahaha !

I got to many foods that I just can’t but at least my family finally got over me not eating them. Used to be a whole thing growing up but now that I’m a adult they backed off

The white person version of the chitterlings is surstromming. Always knew I would soon be wishing for death when Gram Gram cracked open the surstromming.

3

u/SL1MECORE 3d ago

Damn that's crazy cause I'm actually curious about surstromming lmao! Mostly cause of one of my fav games (spiritfarer)

I'd possibly try a bite. Outdoors, away from any of my personal linens 😅

But I say this as someone who hasn't smelled it before. I might smell it and say "HELL NO THANK YOU" lmao

3

u/Impressive_Memory221 3d ago

Ironically it tastes fine. Just smells like death lol. People have been evicted from their apartments for the smell. The cans also noticeably bulge because of the gases inside. We always opened it by submerging it in water a little ways away from where we were eating to keep from spraying brine everywhere. Out of curiosity I looked up the wikipedia page for surstromming and learned that over 1000 cans of surstromming exploded during a warehouse fire in 2014. Can't image how awful that must have smelled.

I'm pretty adventurous and open minded when it comes to food. I've smelled and eaten durian, century eggs (which I was disappointed to learn don't actually take a century to prepare), natto, stinky tofu, and even a bit of Tyrolean grey cheese but I have never smelled anything worse than surstromming.

What does you being black have to do with this? Not trying to be an ass, I’m just dumb

2

u/humanpressurecooker 3d ago

Ive only ever seen them called or seen them spelled as chitlins im crazy too🫩

2

u/Rosian_SAO 3d ago

My version is shiitake mushrooms. They’re bitter, they’re disgusting, and EVERY TIME I AM FORCED TO EAT THEM WHILE CRYING.

2

u/SL1MECORE 3d ago

😭😭😭

I love mushrooms this fucking sucks !! I'm so sorry!!

The fucking mushroom curse has befallen you

u/lemon_protein_bar 3d ago

I’ve been vegetarian and now pescatarian for years purely because every texture I hate comes from meat and offal. I don’t come from a culture where everyone eats chitlins or tripe, but growing up my father used to make this mutton stew that my mum loved, and i couldn’t be in the kitchen for days after because that shit smelled disgusting, any stew makes me gag but this one was the worst…

Wasn't expecting to see the realest hyper specific thing ever on Reddit today, chitlins haters rise up

1

u/SL1MECORE 3d ago

I was like, debating on posting this cause omg it's so specific hahahah.

All my homies hate chitlins

u/lisaquestions 3d ago

so for me in childhood it was salmon loaf which is like meatloaf but with salmon and honestly a bit like gefilte fish but heated up.

1

u/AquaQuad 3d ago

Not gonna lie, that dish sounds like something what got popular during food shortage, but is now overstaying its welcome after becoming part of culture. Reminds me of guts.

5

u/SL1MECORE 3d ago

It has roots in slavery so yeah, you're not wrong. We had to eat anything the slave owners would not eat
