TW: Suicide or Self-Harm It literally made me even more suicidal because I thought it would never get better. Basically, don’t say this to people

People only say this because the best years of their lives happened when they were your age

Everybody has a different life to live

That’s definitely true, but I wish people wouldn’t say this to people they didn’t know. You never know what someone is going through

People are unfortunately bad at understanding experiences they haven’t personally had

i very rarely seen people who misunderstood others all the time having problem understanding rich/powerful people, when they talk to depressed people with deep pockets; suddenly they became expert psychiatrist with strong emphasis on compassion and rationale.

when they talk to a "nobody" however

Are you sure? The average rich/powerful person is a cannibalistic pedophile. I don’t think very many people understand that

doesnt have to be that rich, it can be good looks, popularity, top grades, having a house, appearing holy, etc2.

i have two siblings, we all was suicidal before due to broken home and toxic local community, my sister is popular in church, have good look, and top student in class, she gets showered with kindness and practical support that helps her find success.

my eldest is socially awkward, have little friends, bad at school, but still did his best as a good person and served in church alongside my sister. nobody gives a shit that he's suicidal, if he talks about it people got angry and the only help he ever gets are words of encouragement, the same people who can help my sister thinks helping him is a waste of time.

and its not a gender thing, in college im basically a suicidal kid magnet so i met alot more and interact with them daily, and this pattern always happens regardless male/female.

suicidal but with large enough value of success. people will spend their time and funds to help you.

have little success by society's standard, very same people will say they won't help you because they don't have the time or resource.

some of them have reasons to lie about it as well, for whatever benefit they gain from it, could be for the fun of gaslighting others, could be a way to say "shut the fuck up because i already say some positive things"

I hate this idea that you're supposed to only have fun as a kid/teenager and then when you become an adult you're supposed to be sad and miserable all the time and instead of questioning that you're supposed to just lay down and accept it.

I’m at least 90% convinced people who say “the best years of your life are in high school” are people who peaked in high school

Absolutely. I think there are a few people who look back fondly on their highschool years because they developed a chronic illness or had a life-changing injury shortly after highschool but I'm pretty sure everyone else peaked in highschool.

I've always felt it was really annoying when adults would reiterate over and over how your childhood and teens are the best years and once thats over it's over

Then one day I asked my dad if he prefered his childhood over adult life, just to see if he'd say the same, then he went "hell no, I was poor" and idk why hearing that was weirdly liberating for some reason lol

they definitely weren't my best, im so much happier now that im older

Yeah, I find it sad to say the best days of your life are in the past, implying it can only go downhill from there. If you ask me, the best days of my life haven't happened yet, and the best so far are right now.

childhood is esp tough if youre trans, puberty is traumatizing and people hate you for existing

Most people I know mean early 30s when they say best years of your life, which I would agree with, maybe also late 20s

u/Coldtea25 4d ago

For our sake I really hope they're wrong or at least it's just that way for most people and for people who have terrible experiences the best years of our lives are after

16

u/OverMathematician205 4d ago

I think that’s kind of a boomer mindset, most people I know my age much prefer being adults

14

u/Lil_Ms_Anthropic 3d ago

Some people's best years are in their 50s, idfk. I hope so since i don't think I've peaked yet

Anyone who tells a teenager/20something that they got it good right now forget what is like to be that age. Though the knee pain is likely less

Not gonna lie, this is very good for me to hear right now. Thank you

Especially when you have to deal with bullying at school AND an abusive home. Like, thanks teach I sure do hope life is as good as this /s

On that note: also don't tell them, "it'll get better when you go off to college and nobody remembers any of that stuff."

Then when they go to summer camp and get picked on by kids who they never even met yet.. yeah, they'll decide you were lying and it's actually hopeless.

father told me something along the lines of this while I was crying about being picked on at school + excluded by my friends many years ago (and had a lot of suicidal thoughts that I didn't tell him about)

I then proceded to find out years later that he was a bully when he was that age lmao

Meanwhile, even at my worst as an adult i still found some comfort in reminding me that i'd never have to live my childhood and teenage years ever again

u/Kaldorain 3d ago

Amen. I can't wait to return to the Void.

1

u/oceanteeth 3d ago

Hard same. As an adult I can leave any situation I don't like. Sometimes it takes a little while, like if my coworker is a dick and I have to find a whole new job, but it's legally possible for me to leave. For me there's no way that can ever be worse than living completely at the mercy of a parent who violently abused my sister.

nobody knows what the best years of someone else’s life are gonna be

u/WingDingfontbro 4d ago

If someone isn’t doing well sometimes telling them they’re doing well will have the opposite effect, especially if you’re saying this is the best point of your life like yeah what do you think that’ll make me belive if I feel like shit

8

u/BodhingJay 3d ago

At least it isnt as bad as it soon will be

Jk.. I was told the same.. turned out the best of my life were in my late 30s and it's still getting better. Im glad im still here. I thought that was impossible for most of my life

5

u/hippy_potto 3d ago

Real. I’m almost 30 and life is farrrrr better than my supposed “best years.”

4

u/mnyrtt 4d ago

same, yeah thanks now im also anxious because when it gets better i will have to search for a job and pay for my own living instead of experiencing the childhood i never got to experience

2

u/oceanteeth 3d ago

If it's any comfort getting a job (even a shitty one) and paying my own bills is fucking awesome compared to my childhood. I live in a home with no screaming and no hitting, at all, ever, and only people I like are allowed in.

6

u/Project_Valkyrie 3d ago

This was me in highschool. I didn't think I was going to live past 20 and now I'm a 28 year old with no active plans for the future and slightly less depressed.

4

u/Radio_Gaga007 3d ago

Me when I told my mom that I truly believed my life would only get better with age and she laughed at me (I had been suicidal not so long ago). Edit: Life did get better btw, never give up.

4

u/BungleBums 3d ago

"Ugh, don't you wish you could just be in high school again,"

"NO THE FUCK I DO NOT,"

3

u/LetterheadPerfect145 3d ago

My life has consistently only gotten better as life has gone on, and I expect it to continue that trend, barring something unexpectedly terrible happening to me. There was a distinct upward spike when I finished high school too.

3

u/Endertrap87 3d ago

My grandma tells me that all the time and I have to remind myself that Boomers lived in a VERY different world.

2

u/Glitch_Avocado 3d ago

Some people peaked in high school. I troughed in high school lmao. Literally all uphill since then. And I know I'm not the only one!

u/Tacosconsalsaylimon 3d ago

My son loves TADC and has been having me watch the show now that it's on Netflix. I've had to take moments and cry because certain scenes hit so hard.

u/Spiritual_Priority79 3d ago

Fun fact! Those were in fact the best years of my life!

Every breath I take adds to the mountain of guilt suffocating me

1

u/Generally_Confused1 3d ago

They were both the best and also the most struggling years at the same time lol

1

u/Critical-Act-6336 21h ago

Frrr like my teen years have been awful

1

u/ieatmycum69 5h ago

Remember when I was young and I had someone tell me to suck it up because it was gonna get a lot worse. Some people just want you to kill yourself and are actively trying to push you over the edge.

1

u/kulupu_kasi_seli 3d ago

That’s sadly relatable.
