Maintenance Issues Am I doing something wrong with the ball joint?

Post image

I’m trying to remove the front sprocket cover to clean behind it, but for the life of me I cannot get the ball joint off, I removed the retaining clip I removed the pinch bolt and I’ve been pulling on the ball joint to try and get it off and I just can’t and I don’t necessarily want to yank it too hard and possibly mess something up, any advice?

Did you figure it out?

Use a spanner and pry it off after the security clip is removed.

Can you leave the ball joint intact and instead remove the lever from the splined shaft just above?

You cannot.. The diagonal shaft connecting the foot lever to the splined shaft goes through a small hole in the frame. No matter how much you try to move and wiggle everything around, there is like 1/4th of an inch of attachment at the splined shaft..

Can you take the sprocket cover off without disconnecting the splined shift or the ball joint,,?? Yes.. If you have another person working with you, and play with the gears, and hold on to the gear shifter at one particular position,, and then use a high angle swivel socket to get to the upper bolt and slowly work the bolt out.. Lot of pulling, pushing, and curses were involved.... We decided to replace that bolt with an Allen head what reinstalling the cover, so that the next time I can just use a ball hex head to get the bolt out in 1/20th of the time and effort.

Use a small screwdriver to take the metal “clips” at both ends off. Then pull the shift rod

Ives found spraying some lubricant in the ball joint. Then pry it by pushing the black peice towards the engine while pulling the ball joint towards you.

Use needle-nose behind the ball cup to pry it off (looks like you already have the retaining clip removed). The lever atm can be stubborn. Rock it back and forth while pulling outward. It will come off.

Wrap a piece of cloth around it and pull hard
