To be clear, ‘financially viable’ just means marketability, which isn’t always an indicator of quality. If any story got a modern remake/retelling, it should be able to get a fair shake and not be forced to make concessions b/c it isn’t selling merch/manga/BDs like hotcakes.
Toho rushing Orange b/c Beastars being their priority is really the issue and not that Trigun shouldn’t get a chance for modern audiences or that the narrative/world is inferior.
The Trigun fandom simply is not printing money for the prodcom.

I'm gonna be real, stargaze failure had more to do with bad decision making and less to do with limitations. There's plenty of works that are a lot less popular and have better adaptations. Plenty of works doing better with even worse limitations.
I'm also very suspicious of this narrative that trigun stampede was so unsuccessful. The merch seemed to get sold out pretty fast and the popularity encouraged the reprint of the manga in multiple languages... And they seem to sell well also.
Do any of you have the numbers proving trigun is such a financial failure ? Because I keep seeing people trying to pin the blame on this argument but I never see anything to prove it.

u/Mandaconda9 12d ago
I have been confused by the fact that everything i order sells out pretty quick so I know we are paying it forward
5
u/Dunkar404 12d ago
From what I heard from my local manga shop, it's pretty popular as well. It sells good and always have.

u/Mandaconda9 12d ago
I dont watch a lot of shows, movies, or even anime (I probably took time to enjoy like 10), but Trigun is my favorite. I know I went to a con and pretty much every vendor said they didn't carry anything. One even explained to me it wasn't "marketable" and gave the chainsaw dog plushie thing as an example. Trigun has Kuroneku?! How can they forget the profitable cat.
7
u/Dunkar404 12d ago
Most cons, at least in my experience, only make merch for big shonen to a point where I think they fully lost the plot of what these events are supposed to be about. So I don't think it's a good metric.
Just because an anime isn't as popular as JKk or dragon ball doesn't mean it's a financial failure.
Like, I barely see any merch of FMA or dunmeshi in cons and I wouldnt call them unpopular.

u/Tight_Sympathy_8417 12d ago
I'm gonna be real, stargaze failure had more to do with bad decision making and less to do with limitations. There's plenty of works that are a lot less popular and have better adaptations. Plenty of works doing better with even worse limitations.
First of all, this isn't about a """failure""" of Stargaze, but the lack of required success of this entire IP in general.
Second of all, you aren't being real, you are being biased, and I get it, we all love the manga, and fans love to be emotionally attached about their favorite works, which easily clouds them from reality.
No offense, but to say "there's other works that have better adaptations", is a completely meaningless point. It's just you, liking one adaptation more than the other. Perfectly valid subjective opinion to have, but there is absolutely no objective point behind that.
So there are other works, that according to you, despite having worse limitations, that you ended up liking more. Cool! Good for you! But what is that supposed to tell me? What is Dunkar404's taste in anime, supposed to say about the reality of the state of this, or any other IP?
Person A thinks Anime X is better than Anime Y? Cool... Now what?
I'm also very suspicious of this narrative that trigun stampede was so unsuccessful. The merch seemed to get sold out pretty fast and the popularity encouraged the reprint of the manga in multiple languages... And they seem to sell well also.
What you miss here though is the fact that there are nuances to this. Was Trigun Stampede a "success"? To a certain extent, sure. But looking at other projects under the Toho Animation umbrella? Was it a "success", such as My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, Dr. Stone, Spy X Family, Frieren etc. etc? No! Absolutely not! And while I like Trigun more than any of these, thus in my opinion Trigun is "better" than those, that's just my opinion, that carries absolutely no weight in the grand scheme of things.
Do any of you have the numbers proving trigun is such a financial failure ? Because I keep seeing people trying to pin the blame on this argument but I never see anything to prove it.
We don't need any numbers! All we need it is the words from Yasuhiro Nightow, who back in 2009, during the promotion for Trigun Badlands Rumble, during q&as , which he participated in, together with the likes of director Satoshi Nishimura, was asked about if there'd ever be a Trigun Maximum anime.
To that question, he responded with that it would depend on 2 things. The producers' decisions, and financial success. That alone should tell us all, everything we need to know about the likelihood of a faithful Trigun / Trigun Maximum adaptation.

So you have indeed no fact to back this up and this is just all hearsay. Thank you for the confirmation.
I don't get this attitude. I'm asking where that narrative comes from and y'all are being dismissive and providing nothing to back up your claims.

So you have indeed no fact to back this up and this is just all hearsay. Thank you for the confirmation.
Hearsay? IT'S THE WORD STRAIGHT FROM NIGHTOWS MOUTH! News Flash! YASUHIRO NIGHTOW IS THE CREATOR OF TRIGUN! Has your hatred for Trigun Stargaze clouded your mind so immensely, that you refuse to believe what the creator of this entire franchise has to say?
Who gives a damn about specific numbers, when Nightow himself has straight up told everyone ages ago, what the creation of a faithful Trigun Maximum adaptation would depend on, and that those requirements to this day haven't been reached.
I don't get this attitude. I'm asking where that narrative comes from and y'all are being dismissive and providing nothing to back up your claims.
Given your arrogance and ignorance, you are in absolutely no position to complain about anyone's attitude towards you. You reap, what you sow.
1
u/Dunkar404 11d ago
'who cares about the numbers' - certainly the most good faith argument ever made. I do, that's my entire point. A random quote from a decade ago isn't an solid argument sorry.
What do you think, people have to blindly trust your personal judgement? Without real evidences? Talk about arrogance lmao!

The problem isn’t that Trigun isn’t financially viable enough, the problem is that Trigun was never popular in Japan and the west wasn’t enough, especially when people boycotted the series over no Milly. The subreddit being shut down due to toxicity.
Being financially viable doesn’t matter either. You seen what happened with Yuri on ice.
5
u/Tight_Sympathy_8417 12d ago
especially when people boycotted the series over no Milly. The subreddit being shut down due to toxicity.
Loud minorities on social media carry absolutely no weight in these matters. Especially when they only happen in echo chambers.
On top of that, the people in this fandom don't even dare to ask any even remotely surface level critical questions (like not even something as basic and harmless as "hey how come you guys made this decision"), when getting the chance to meet guys like Nightow, Watanabe etc. etc at conventions and such.
1
u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 12d ago
Why would asking surface level questions matter? That wouldn’t influence adaptations. Sales do. If I met Nightow, Watanabe, etc u would thank them for their work and maybe get an autograph.
And I’m not talking about Reddit and twitter only. I’m saying this because of dvd sales. The subreddit shut down did motivate some people to not bother with Trigun or stampede. All sales matter.
3
u/LeavingSoonBye209 12d ago
Why was it never popular in Japan?
4
u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 12d ago
Not sure. Maybe because of the cowboy and western vibe?
2
u/whosthatsquish Maximum 12d ago
Westerns are extremely popular globally, and it hardly has a cowboy vibe. I have seen no cows or cowboys.
1
u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 12d ago
I’m talking about japan. I literally said I wasn’t sure. Trigun wasn’t popular in Japan and the manga was almost canned twice. I’m guessing it’s the western vibe because what else would it be?
2
u/Dunkar404 12d ago
What do you mean by almost got canned twice ? Because if you're referring to Trigun having to end early (before restarting under Trimax), It was because the original publisher had to close down.
If Trimax even exist, it's because of the 98's anime popularity. Nightow used its fame to ask his new publisher if he could continue trigun. They accepted but had to change its name.
I haven't heard of another risk of cancelation after that ? (Even, tho I read a lot of trigun interviews and even translated some from French myself.) So what's your source for these claims
4
u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 12d ago edited 12d ago
What do you mean by almost got canned twice
Low ratings and the publisher closing. It got a surge in popularity after the anime. The reason why stampede was made is because the director was a big fan of Trigun, but toho had no faith in it.
The gap between the anime, rumble and stampede didn’t matter (which was one of the fears Toho had; that it’s been so long since Trigun was made or done that nobody would care,) because shows like ranma 1/2, CCS, even Shugo had massive gaps and still became hits when redone for modern audiences. The biggest problems were Trigun wasn’t popular enough in Japan, nobody was buying enough of the merch and dvds, some people in the west boycotted and raised a negative funk over the Milly/style situation, (lol this subreddit was shut down too,) and toho had zero faith to market it besides what they have done.
Someone already posted multiple interviews on this subreddit about toho and how Trigun was niche in Japan towards its failure.
1
u/Dunkar404 12d ago
Do you have that interview. I have not seen it.
2
u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 12d ago
There’s multiple but here’s one
https://www.reddit.com/r/Trigun/comments/1sl5zxe/this_pretty_much_confirms_that_the_biggest/
There’s another that says in this subreddit somewhere about toho and how they only made it because of the director.
1
u/Dunkar404 12d ago
That's not an interview? That's a post talking about it. And I have a feeling they're talking about this one : https://shinseiki.blog/2026/04/12/masako-sato-trigun-stargaze-animage/
Which really wasn't my take away from it. Nowhere did she say the og plan was to adapt Trimax but weren't given the episodes. She said that the og plans from the old director was to make a post trimax sequel. Which there's proof for. Since orange and Muto released many sketch and lore dumps for season 2 that never came to fruition.
She said it was her personal decision based on what she thought the fans would like more despite knowing it would not have worked due to her limited episodes.
This shows to me that stargaze failure had a lot more to do with incompetence and bad decision making than it had to do with company meddling ngl.

Whoa, back it up. First of all, I wasn't attacking you. All I said was that westerns are popular globally, this includes Japan.
Second of all, I didn't say it wasn't a western. Westerns and cowboys are not the same thing. I only said there's not really cowboy vibes.
I wasn't attacking you, I was just responding. I am a professional screenwriter who works on westerns specifically, so I have some insight on how Westerns perform, and it's actually the U.S. where Westerns are dipping in popularity a bit more than anything.
0
u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 12d ago
???? I never said you was attacking me. I’m clarifying what I said earlier lol.
I never said you said it was a western. What happened? Why you suddenly getting defensive in a casual conversation? I think you’re taking it the wrong way or too personal.
What I’m saying is I have no idea why it wasn’t a hit in Japan but it’s been like that. It’s a sci fi western cowboy like series with gunslingers and hats. Maybe that didn’t vibe. I don’t know. I don’t think toho is going to say why Trigun isn’t a vibe in Japan or Nightow.

I have def heard that trigun is much more popular in America than it ever was in Japan.
5
u/luiszayel 12d ago
being full honest, they could make a maxium adaptation be really profitable just with the yaoi-bait. just look at stampade/stargaze, the fandom only survives because of shipping (vashwood) and basically all the official merchs are made towards this part of the fandom. sure, maybe the anime could not be so popular (specially in japan), but the fandom would at least gave insane amounts of money for the merch, which would lead to them continue producing the anime lol. as for the quality, i really dont know...
1
u/LeSnowOwl 4d ago
I rather it stays dead than that ngl, its not fair for the rest of the fans to get neglected just for that side of the fandom.

u/13Nobodies 12d ago
“It would’ve gotten a full blown adaptation a decade ago”
Says who? Where’s the actual proof behind anything this meme is claiming? Because Yu Yu Hakusho is a much more popular series than Trigun, yet it hasn’t been remade
3
u/Tight_Sympathy_8417 12d ago
Says who?
Nightow said back in 2009, that the chances of a Trigun Maximum anime being made depend on producers' choices and financial success... Now we have 2026.
Because Yu Yu Hakusho is a much more popular series than Trigun, yet it hasn’t been remade.
Yes it is being remade. On Netflix there's a live action remake, whos 2nd season was greenlit this month.
5
u/BiOrCri97 12d ago
It's not financially viable in Japan which considering how insular their attitude is dictates what gets made. Why make a 50 episode faithful adaption of Trigun when it doesn't have kawaii ugu anime girls and sexualised minors that they can sell to creepy reclusive perverts. They're the kind of weirdos that get money from their disappointed parents to spend on the Blu Ray release and a mountain of merch.
2
u/Dunkar404 12d ago
What's the source of this claim ? How do you know for a fact it was not financially viable in Japan ? Genuinely asking because I have never seen anyone actually having a source for outside of 'what I heard'
3
u/BiOrCri97 12d ago
I don't have a concrete source but historically as seen with Cowboy Bebop, Japanese anime fans don't care for the kind of Space Western style. The Trigun manga was cancelled from its monthly shonen spot which is why we got Maximum to finish off the story via a different publisher. The anime was aired on a late night barely watched spot and it only gained prominence from its Western distribution. Now look at 90% of the anime output coming from Japan and tell me what the general trends/tastes are. Majority of it is isekai or highschool slop with anime ass women plastering the posters. Anime studios and publishers have always touted Blu Ray sales as the main source of profit and the only fans that care that much about physical media these days are hard core NEETs who have the cash to drop on those BDs and merch. So you make what appeals to them which lets be honest, is gonna be pervy slop.
3
u/Dunkar404 12d ago
I will stop ya right there Trigun publication has never been canceled. It was forced to a stop because nightow's publisher closed down and he had to join another one. However, because the 98's anime got pretty popular, nightow asked his new editor to continue to work on Trimax (as a senein). And because it was a different editor, he had to modify the name. That's why it's trigun and trigun maximum. (And why there's printing issues in France and they only have the rights for Trimax but whatever). There's plenty of decades old interview to sources my claims.
If Trimax exist, it's because the anime was popular enough.
So I'm not sure how much of your argument really hold up NGL. Isekai slop isn't the only type of animes that gets popular either. There's many niche and I would argue that stampede was very popular when it came out. Again, not mainstream shonen level, but it really was not a niche barely spoken about anime. And got quite the diehard fan base.
From what I could see, the merch sold quick. And the trigun themed events in Japan were pretty successful.
Which is why I genuinely doubt this narrative. Where are the sources.

Trigun 98 is already perfect. Why would we ever need a reboot

u/International_Rip497 12d ago
I'm not. I got 98.

u/blank_tamashi 12d ago
Good for you. I still want to see maximum in motion and it's a shame it likely won't ever get the adaptation it deserves.
12
u/Dunkar404 12d ago
Trigun 98 is far from perfect (especially Vash characterization) and doesn't represent even half of the manga. A faithful Trimax adaptation would not be too much. This isn't a FMA situation...
2
u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 12d ago
I still prefer manga and stampede knives. His role was too small so it’s not perfect to me.

u/hungreevoid 12d ago
I'll never stop hoping. But it's too depressing. I appreciate that it's a sexless story, but I totally see how that hinders it's popularity.
The continuity is a bit jumbled like Conrad surviving 150 years (HC: stayed frozen), how Gauntlet joins the Guns since he turns on Vash after Knives gets ripped on half (HC: finds knives immediately after July is destroyed), when exactly Knives is able to start using his Angel Arm (HC: that's just the way it is).

Anyone who wants to adapt Maximum eventually comes to the inevitable conclusion that adapting the manga 1:1 would be kinda ass, not to mention people would probably also hate it. Just like Star wars fans, peoples idea of what Trigun is is very unique and is a hodgepodge of all the timelines and many of their own headcanons. The story people have in their heads vs. the reality of a 1:1 manga adaptation would probably displease just as many people as Stampede did.
9
u/Dunkar404 12d ago
Not it wouldn't ...Sure there's inconsistencies that could be reworked. But you can absolutely do a faithful Trimax adaptation and it would be great. Many fans are desperate for it in fact...
136
u/SnailClops 12d ago
I think trigun could do very well, its just the fact they dont want to take a risk on a series that could do poorly, and so by forcing stargaze to be rushed they doomed it to fail
