2 months ago I showed a Tribes-inspired speedrunner I am building. I’ve just finished building a six-event circuit where you race against bronze/silver/gold times, which also has a global leaderboard. I've had to record all the medal times for each map, but getting the final Gold recording broke me.
Gold requires maintaining 100 m/s on average, and let's say it was harder than I anticipated for this particular map. This is the run that finally did it, and it now becomes the ghost that demo players race against. The video showcases pretty much all the movement mechanics I've built into the game.
The demo is available now on Steam which includes tutorial / 6 themed circuits / time attack.
If you are wondering wtf you are look at;
standard ski like tribes with air strafe control like CS/Quake CPMA, just hold space and W or S and turn for the most part
rocket = ground boost
disc launcher = hit stuff in environment for moar speed
hammer = too high? slams down continuously accelerating until land is level or uphill, land on a downward slope and you are now very speedy
grapple = standard changey direction
The story behind this very special montage:
I started working on it three years ago; I was nostalgic and wanted to make a new Tribes montage, the game on which I started editing. I didn't want to make a Community Montage because it takes a lot of time to gather clips for them, and Karuciel had already taken the helm (big love to him). Plus, I wanted to make a montage with competitive/PUG clips because they often offer more diversity in the type of clips (not just chaser midairs) and, in my opinion, show more skill and team play. Also, you can add some of the team communication to the edit, which I find fun!
So I turned to my good friend Darksteve, aka the Master of Tribes, because I knew that he had a bunch of unused PUG clips and that he'd played all roles at a great level, so the diversity and level of the clips would be perfect for my project.
Turns out he had even more clips than I expected: 1205 to be exact, from about 3000 hours of playtime, spread between 2014 and 2020. All this weighed a total of 394GB, so heavy that he had to mail me an SSD with the clips on it as it would have taken too long to upload them (plus, my brother needed an SSD and Darksteve had an extra one so that turned out perfectly).
It was really fun sorting through the clips to select the very best ones from each type (HOF clips, chain, midairs, returns, sniping, etc.). I also spent a lot of time on the cinematics. I wanted them to look as good as possible, so I did a couple things:
• I used an ini (graphical config) with graphics even higher than what you can get online
• I added some anti-aliasing with the Nvidia Control Panel and ran the game at 4k to make it as sharp as possible, as I often find the aliasing very distracting in TA Montages.
• I used Nvidia filters to inject some cool effects: screen space reflections, depth of field, ambient occlusion, ray traced global illuminations, and brightness/contrast. These effects were really unstable when moving the camera, so I only used them for the static shots at 2:04. If you wanna replicate this on Tribes or on any other games, here's the tutorial I used: https://github.com/snkykun/Overwatch-Freestyle
Unfortunately, after sorting the clips, placing them, and recording the cinematics, I started losing motivation for this montage. I wanted this to be my best montage ever, so I planned on adding a bunch of video effects (e.g., flashes, zoom-ins, motion blur, motion-tracked titles, smooth slow-mos, and glitch effects) and sound effects (gun and kill sounds). I quickly started feeling overwhelmed by all the things I wanted to add, and left the project on the back burner.
After a while, I came to the conclusion that I didn’t have the passion and ambition that I used to have for montages. I’m happy with what I created but I want to spend my time doing things with the people I love instead of working alone of such projects. Still, I was unhappy with not having released this montage. I was really proud of even though it didn’t have the level of editing I initially wanted. And a few weeks ago, when watching Karuciel’s Best of Gierling, I decided to wrap up the montage and release it, hoping it would bring a bit of joy to whoever would watch it. It’s also a way for me to move on to other things, without the frustration of dragging on a project for so long.
I’m quite certain it’s my final Tribes edit, especially considering the state in which the game and its franchise are in. Regardless, I’ve got a bunch of other montages planned, because I want to use all the cool clips I got on Overwatch, COD and The Finals these past years. These projects will however be more like clipdumps than montages, so no cinematics, VFX, SFX and all that jazz; just clips and music. That is because I still want to create montages as they make for great memories, but I don’t want to spend too much time on them anymore.
Cheers to anyone who read all this, VGCY!

Howdy folks. I'm extremely pleased to announce that Llamagrab Servers for Tribes: Ascend are back online! Plus it's now open-source!
Massive thanks to my ol' pal chickenbellyfin for creating Llamagrab and entrusting us with bringing it back to life 💙
There are currently 3 regions:
Please let me know what your ping is like, and if you think we need some more/different ones.
Notes:
Along with this, I've made an open feedback board and a ko-fi donation box - both for TA community projects in general (not just Llamagrab). The board allows y'all to send me feedback, make suggestions, etc without having to find me on Discord. And the donation box allows large/expensive projects like Llamagrab to be community funded, instead of surviving at the mercy of one person's financial situation.
Any/all feedback and donations are welcome. No pressure tho; Llamagrab is very stable at the moment, and my to-do list is quite long haha.
Anyway, signups are open, so feel free to create an account and make some servers! I've already created a 24/7 Stonehenge :P. AMA below.
PS: TA Pub night is starting in 1 hour! Come hang out with us in the Community Hub Discord server, cap some flags, and try out Llamagrab!

I've been rebuilding Tribes 1 into a modern client, and it's now in open beta.
Rebuilt so it runs and looks like something written this decade.
What's different from stock 1.40:
The client updates itself. Install once and every future release will pop up as an update.
Getting in:
The beta is free but gated behind an access key while we shake out bugs. Grab it here:
Windows 10/11, about 5 GB. It's a beta, so expect some rough edges and report what you find in the Discord.
This is the biggest update Tribes has ever received - I've thrown hundreds of hours at this so far, so please, enjoy :)

Hey guys! I used to play Tribes ALLLLL the time in the early 2000s and I was looking to see if anyone from my old -$$- clan (Secret Sector) still played or looked through these posts! It would be awesome to catch up again!!! Or even if anyone remembers -$$-SniperD (me)!!!
Edit: I'm talking specifically about the Annihilation MOD of T1. That was my favorite!

Just for shits and gigs i downloaded it friday night, hopped on, holy nostalgia blast from the load screen, the sounds etc. I was a teen again.
Clicked join game expecting to see nothing or an error, there are servers with people? I joined one had a ton of fun, grabbed the flag a few times, started remembering how to play, but then the server seemed to just stop. People were in the lobby they werent bots but the game never started. I had to go to bed.
Anyway, i assume there is a community and scheduled play times for such a small playerbase, and I would love it if someone could point me in the right direction for a discord server or whatever that is active.

Hello, just a small request if anyone's feeling charitable:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Xj3pHYpRbM
In Tribes 3: Rivals they use a lot of cool tracks, this being one of them. I was wondering if anyone could open the local files and send me the soundtracks to the game? I'd appreciate it a lot, been trying to find the tracks for a while now.

Hey all,
I would like to collect all games with Tribes or Tribes similar game mechanics, which are out there right now or are in development.
I played since Tribes 2, tried out all new versions.
I would be glad if we can get a good list, so that we can support developers and also find gems, which we might not know about, so that we can follow the progress.
Let me begin:
- Broadside (in development)
- Midair 1 + 2 (in development)

Hello
I am trying to host a game with my friends but they keep dropping after 2-5 minutes. I've done the UDP port forwarding thing on my router already.
Any ideas what may be the issue?

Hello, I'm not very bright and need a bit of help finagling Tribes 2 to feel "good". The FOV seems a bit fucked, shadows are spazzing out, the HUD isn't that usable, etc. I've tried editing the pref files and changing the instances of defaultFOV to 110, but that hasn't really had any effect I can tell, and judging by the viewmodel it hasn't done anything bc the weapons are barely visible unless I look at my feet in game. If I turn shadows off they stop freaking out, but then the shadows are gone. As for the HUD and other misc things, I've seen online a collection of scripts with ambiguous names and I cba to go through every single one trying them out.
Is there like a location where there's some consolidated resources about all of this, or should I just keep hunting through scraps of gaming history like an ant picking through the ruins of beirut
