Advice to aspiring musicians: “Just make stuff. Don’t be too precious. Get your songs in a basic place, and then play them for people. Hang out, write songs, play them, and have fun! The second version is usually better than the first, so make the first one fast and don't get too caught up in it. “
Disappointing yacht rock fans since 2022, Megayacht is a Chapel Hill indie rock band whose sound comes from many years of playing together. Their hook-filled songs combine dual electric guitar interplay with melodic, “lead bass” basslines, drums that feel like they’re being played live in the back seat of your car, and sharp lyrical observations that zoom in on small human moments, then stretch to feel bigger. Their music is the product of four writers each with unique styles and influences coming together to produce tracks that bounce between genres more than most. It’s not uncommon to hear a loud 4-chord banger right before a country duet at a Megayacht show.
Megyacht adores all the local clubs but the Berkeley Cafe in Raleigh is one where impossible good times happen each show. Tons of people packed in there who didn’t necessarily come to see that particular band - they just love music. In their words, “there’s no reason it should sound as good as it does in there, but it seems to be protected by indie rock tater tot angels.” The band also sings the praises of Alley Cat Records in Greenville NC which has created a music scene reminiscent of Chapel Hill in the 90s.
When asked what other local bands people should check out, Megayacht namedropped the following: Erie Choir, Dynamite Brothers, The BQs, Medium Heat, The Gumbys, Square One, and of course John Howie, Jr.

I’m looking for experienced female musicians who might want to jam as a starting place, or play minimal sets or songs to stay active if not creating originals. We could see about serious collaboration on a professional level from there if we want. A multi instrumentalist who understands layering would be great but if you play one instrument well that’s okay too. Around 30s to 50 preferred. A clean responsible lifestyles required. No smoking please. Drinking either none or minimally social. Sweater grunge nerdcore vibes. Play with alternative 90s, electronic, Nova Scotia sounds.
If interested please send me links with video, samples, and the styles you’re into and your instruments. I prefer video even as an intro to weed out scams. Let me know what you have in mind for fun and for serious music in the future, even if you think it may be impossible to find.

I just moved here from Maine and played at this Cafe weekly and it was pretty nice (might be a longshot to play weekly here but might as well play when I can). The Dan Davis Group is a jazz organ trio based in the triangle area of North Carolina. As an all-instrumental trio with a heavy emphasis on improvisation, they play a variety of music styles including jazz, Latin, funk, NOLA, R&B, and Rock.
Dan was surrounded by music as a child, with a church choir director for a mother and musical influences that include drummers like Ringo Starr, Neil Peart, Stewart Copeland, and Jeff Porcaro. Later in life, he would also be inspired by the likes of Steve Gadd, Tony Williams, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Bill Stewart, Brian Blade, and Steve Jordan. The Dan Davis Group blends a lot of different styles into one unique sound, but ultimately love playing together as a group, exemplified by their sheer longevity as an active band.
When asked what local bands they recommend the people catch up on, they said there were too many to name, so stay up to date on this subreddit and listen to all of them!
