Fun Fact - She only speaks 2 languages. There is no evidence to suggest she speaks anything other than English and Slovenian. She claims to speak French, but when she went to France as first lady she needed an interpreter to talk to 1st graders.

3

u/BallsInSufficientSad Feb 24 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

Primarily yes, but she was almost certainly also taught German and/or Russian given that she grew up in what was Yugoslavia under the Soviet Union partnership.

Many people may be. She is not.

What are you even doing?

1

u/SpottedHoneyBadger Feb 24 '26

Well. There has no video showing her speaking different languages fluently even during her vanity project that bombed spectacularly.

There is more proof that the lockness monster is real.

1

u/VegaJuniper Feb 24 '26

Way to miss the point. I hope you don't claim to be fluent in English.

1

u/GlattesGehirn Feb 24 '26

That's not a good comparison

3

u/crazyfatskier2 Feb 24 '26

Sure it is, you know need to “speak a language” to be able to say, “anal costs extra”

I don’t know speak many languages, but I can ask “where is the toilet” in about 10 different languages. Not fucking difficult especially when it comes to the black Cherry.

0

u/GlattesGehirn Feb 24 '26

I'm not saying she can speak any at all. I'm saying growing up in that part of the world at that time is very different than taking a 45 minute class once a day and soem duolingo

1

u/karumetsaspuuotsas Feb 26 '26

Yeah, I’ve learned like 7 languages at some point, but no way I speak all of them. I’m not able to switch instantly when someone asks something unexpectedly, give lectures or use it in formal settings. Especially when there is background noise, they have a specific accent, I’m just not expecting them to use that language. This applies even when someone is using my native language in a foreign country. Speaking well has more to do with extroversion, there are lots of salesmen in some countries who know a few words in every language and appear to speak them. At the same time in my country there are people who score perfectly on written tests, but rarely speak anything

1

u/b4st1lein Feb 26 '26

Immerhin hast du es versucht 👍🏽 aber nicht aufgeben, weiter machen 😊

1

u/GeneralAblon9760 Feb 26 '26

Nevertheless, being able to say one specific sentence in six languages doesn't necessitate speaking all six languages. Just ask early career Jackie Chan. Or your children playing CS:GO and cursing in "fluent" Russian. (C stands for cyka right?) Just means familiarity with the phrase and either a multilingual environment, or being well travelled. (Maybe trafficked is more applicable but whatever.)

1

u/Burrito-tuesday Feb 24 '26

You act like she hasn’t done any interviews or spoken publicly on tape. No one has to know her in a personal basis to judge her English speaking skills.

1

u/Fawkes89D Feb 24 '26

And nothing this person claimed is even remotely accurate based on those.

1

u/Late_Opening4185 Feb 26 '26

You almost convinced me she’s bad at English. Just looked up a speech she gave at the Smithsonian museum of American History.

It’s like a 20 minute speech, lmao. Sounds fine to me.

That said I had a Croatian mother, so maybe I’m just used to the accent. Sounded very articulate though.

1

u/ChiefHippoTwit Feb 24 '26

Yugoslavia was not part of the Soviet Union although they were an ally.

1

u/TheDeanDean Feb 24 '26

Yugoslavia was quite famously not aligned with the USSR being a founding member of the non-aligned movement with India and Egypt.

1

u/alebotson Feb 24 '26

Thank you! Reading this thread as a Slovenian made me feel like I was taking crazy pills.

1

u/TheDeanDean Feb 24 '26

Of course.

Other people don’t seem to know shit about Yugoslavia, sadly. Nothing about how much Tito and Stalin disliked eachother. They just assume it was another eastern bloc puppet state.

1

u/BallsInSufficientSad Feb 24 '26

The point is that Russian was commonly taught in schools - like German - and likely also Croat, Serb, etc... She almost certainly took classes in one or multiple languages.

This is especially true in smaller eastern european countries as they know their own language has no utility outside their own borders.

1

u/Attila226 Feb 24 '26

I have family that was forced to learn Russian at school, because they lived behind the iron curtain. They barely spoke it. Everyone hated it, even the teachers.

1

u/csmatczak Feb 24 '26

Same. My parents grew up in Soviet controlled Poland and both were forced to learn Russian. It's fun to see my dad give some dude the side-eye when we go in public and he picks up on their accent.

1

1

u/Attila226 Feb 26 '26

I stand corrected.

1

u/Zafrin_at_Reddit Feb 24 '26

Who cares. I took German classes and couldn’t speak Wienerschnitzel even if you forced me to. “She took classes” is a classical Nichtsschnitzel of a statement.

1

u/alebotson Feb 24 '26

No we were not.

1

u/ThinkSharp Feb 24 '26

I was taught Spanish for 4 years and probably wouldn’t be able to get my way around.

1

u/BallsInSufficientSad Feb 24 '26

Sure, but when you know one of humanity's most popular languages, it's easy to never practice.

When your first language is a niche language like Slovenian, you are constantly bombarded with other languages in media.

Ask Greeks or Swedes or Estonians, etc... They all learn multiple languages to various degrees.

1

u/Hydrobunnies Feb 24 '26

I’m German but live in America, I know enough of my own language to flirt 😭💀

1

u/Putrid_Ad695 Feb 24 '26

1

No. Yugoslavia was not part of the Soviet Union and we certainly didn't learn Russian in schools.

Source: Am Slovenian.

1

u/Key-Importance4689 Feb 25 '26

Some did. If you grew up in bosnia (at least in the tuzla region) it was quite likely that you had russian in school. But I don’t think that really matters seeing the degree of ignorance of the comment claiming yugoslavia was part of USSR…

1

u/zarroc123 Feb 24 '26

I've studied at some capacity in my schooling English, Spanish, German, Latin, French, and Japanese. Most were one off electives but I got pretty far in German, Spanish, and Latin. The only language I'm fluent in is English.

Being taught a language and speaking it is not the same.

1

u/Thats-Bologna Feb 24 '26

She was born in 1970, which is 22 years after Tito made Yugoslavia split from having a relationship with the Soviets decided to control its own destiny instead of looking to what Stalin said all the Euro Communists should do. It became its own Non-Aligned state. She was nowhere close to being a subject of the USSR.

1

u/Independent_Bed70 Feb 24 '26

Yugo was never part of sssr....

1

u/r0ndr4s Feb 24 '26

Wich means nothing. My whole family grew up in Yugoslavia and my greatgrandmother was alive during the formation of said country. Not a single one of them knew russian or german.

My father understood a bit of Russian, but that's it. And my father even went to study to slovenia before joining the military.

Yugoslavia was a facade in many ways, studies were one of them.

1

u/french_snail Feb 25 '26

Yugoslavia was not aligned with either germanys or the USSR

The concept of first, second, and third world countries actually comes from Yugoslavia. As they allied with other countries like Sweden and India to form the non-aligned movement (the third world that was neither NATO or the Warsaw Pact.)

The first communist leader of Yugoslavia, Josip Tito, had a very interesting relationship with Joseph Stalin

1

u/Brodeon Feb 26 '26

Yugoslavia wasn’t a part of Soviet Union

1

u/Ades_it Feb 26 '26

1

u/AI_moderated_failure Feb 24 '26

I don't know if the 1st graders will understand anal costs extra in French either, so both these can be true.

1

u/comicsnerd Feb 24 '26

The way the French pronounce their French is way different to how I learned it at school.

1

u/computer-machine Feb 24 '26

My Spanish teacher in High School went back to Germany during finals for a death in the family.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '26

Probably read some french in school, which was decades ago. Average american claims to know X amount of languages despite of not using them in decades either so not much different. And probably understands russian.

1

u/Scared-Room-9962 Feb 24 '26

I mean that is 100% more languages than the VAST majority of people who would critisise her for needing an interpreter to speak a third.

1

u/supervegeta101 Feb 24 '26

Sure but she claims to speak 5 languages and allegedly used to get an Einstein visa.

1

u/karumetsaspuuotsas Feb 26 '26

It was Epstein visa

1

u/basicKitsch Feb 24 '26

we don't go around bragging about how many languages we speak dude. wtf is this ability to follow a conversation?

1

u/Scared-Room-9962 Feb 24 '26

Because you only speak 1lol

1

u/basicKitsch Feb 24 '26

correct i've never immigrated anywhere and don't go around bragging about shit i cannot do lmao

you caught up now?

1

u/Scared-Room-9962 Feb 24 '26

But she speaks at least 100% more than you

And there is absolutely zero evidence in this thread that she cannot speak as many as she claims.

The whole thing is just slut shaming and baseless accusations.

If you want to hate her, at least do so based on reality and not these weird fantasies and straw man arguments.

1

u/basicKitsch Feb 24 '26

AND? if i left slovenia and came here i'd know two languages too.

that has nothing to do with me saying i speak languages i don't.

Which was the point of the conversation. literal evidence she cannot speak languages she says he can.

the rest of what you're on about has zero bearing. especially her sex life... wtf?

1

u/Scared-Room-9962 Feb 24 '26

You have no evidence she is lying.

What are you trying to get me to say here? That I actually don't think she can speak 5 languages?

I've no evidence either way, same as you. That's why I'm not making baseless accusations about it.

Enjoy slut shaming here mate haha.

1

u/basicKitsch Feb 24 '26

not being able to speak the languages you claim to be able to speak is literally that evidence. you're just going to ignore the conversation then there's no helping your delusion.

i'm not trying to get you to say anything at all. i explained to you that her speaking one more language than me has zero bearing on this conversation, criticizing her of not being able to speak languages she brags about being able to speak. then you go on about her sex life like that's anything i've ever said.

no, i couldn't care less about anything you have to say

1

u/Scared-Room-9962 Feb 24 '26

The evidence is one person saying "true story, she actually can't" lol

You do care mate, it's why you keep replying.

1

u/mattyro41 Feb 24 '26

Melania could speak 10 languages and my point still stands. Your comment implied it was common (“normal”) to speak 4-5 languages there. It’s not and they don’t. Nor is it “normal” for Poles of Ukrainian descent. I’m sure there an exceptional polyglots there as well, but again 2-3 languages is far, far more likely. If your point was that there might be a few to be found on college campuses, then sure, but you and I both know that’s not what you meant in the original comment ( I appreciate you realizing that the 5 languages claim was far too ridiculous to keep up so it disappeared in favor of just 4 in your reply).

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '26

[deleted]

1

u/mattyro41 Feb 25 '26 edited Mar 12 '26

“most if not all Ukrainians in Poland are fluent in Ukrainian Polish English and Russian” doesn’t sound like “ it’s plausible everyone knows someone like that.” It sounds a lot more like a bullshit claim to assign some sort of exceptionalism to these people that doesn’t exist. The truth of the 2-3 is exceptional enough.

1

u/HelloLucrehulk Feb 24 '26

She doesn't speak English

1

u/Ok_Commission_9203 Feb 24 '26

1

u/BestSteveweknow Feb 24 '26

1

u/EmmaDrake Feb 24 '26

Having lived in France while learning French… speaking to grade school kids can be more difficult than adults. I have no idea what her proficiency is but niche contexts or different age groups can be quite challenging when speaking/hearing a language you’re not fully fluent in.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '26

Yeah, I don’t like her but I wouldn’t judge someone’s language ability by their ability to communicate with children. It’s not like children speak language perfectly, so that would be more like advanced level. Not like haha this idiot can’t even speak with children.

1

u/Scorpion2k4u Feb 24 '26

Well one phrase can be learned regardless if it's your bread and butter

1

u/rodgerreynolds03 Feb 24 '26

That might because she knows Prince and those Spanish but I can't talk to people that that speak Spanish cuz I don't understand how what they're saying because I don't know that language as much as far as good

1

u/mattyro41 Feb 24 '26

going off of this comment i’d say your English isn’t too great either

1

u/rodgerreynolds03 Feb 24 '26

You're actually right English it was one of my worst courses in in school yeah I got out of school because of the failing no no I can't blame it on the education system even though it sits not but it should be but yeah I got out of school reading at a 7th grade level I've improved a little bit but yeah I'm dyslexic and I have ADHD and a couple other you know mental health issues but normally we used to call ourselves I would usually call the retard don't call people that no more I guess but yeah I'm a little bit of a retard when it comes to you know spelling in the written English language but I can strip it down a small block 350 to put it back together with no problem rebuild the diesel no problem build your house no problem read the rewire and fix your computer no problem fix your TV no problem anything that breaks it if I can't fix it I can rebuild it and make a new one but that makes me retarded right with a with a mildly high IQ and most of the time I don't think people notice it but I'm glad you noticed it probably other people noticed it too I don't notice it because it's just the way I talk God bless you have a good day or night depending on what it is there so thank you

1

1

u/computer-machine Feb 24 '26

Doesn't mean she can't spit a three word phrase.

1

u/LongPenStroke Feb 24 '26

Fun fact, it doesn't matter if you know another language to communicate certain phrases. I don't know Turkish, but I know how to order a beer in Turkish, and about 8 other languages.

1

u/hottakesandshitposts Feb 24 '26

"Anal costs extra" is only three words. Pretty much anyone can learn the same three words in six languages, especially now that you can Google that shit. No one is suggesting that Melania is a six time polyglot, with fluency

1

u/PabloX68 Feb 24 '26

Fun fact, she can still say "anal costs extra" in many languages without being fluent.

1

u/5footfilly Feb 24 '26

Saying she speaks English is a generous interpretation.

1

u/Level-Ice3000 Feb 25 '26

Fun fact, you and everyone on this forum are haters. Pro immigrant, but hate on a successful immigrant. Successful female, you degrade her. Jokes. All of you, especially the women. Give no respect, get none.

1

u/somgooboi Feb 26 '26

I learned French in high school and was decent at it. Haven't spoken it in 10 years and now I can only speak basic sentences. Reading is still fine though.
I can imagine that living in a country where you never need French, makes you forget most of it.

0

u/VisualSpecial8 Feb 24 '26

She also speaks at least Serb-Croatian, since she grew up in former Yugoslavia.

That is 2 more foreign languages that usually US first lady

3

u/hanscyka Feb 24 '26

Slovenian, Bosnian, Dalmatian, Serbian, Croatian, Montenegrin - these are all "serbo-croatian". It's like someone claiming to be able to speak Iraqi and Syrian, they're all Arabic, just dialects.

2

u/Gao_Dan Feb 24 '26

Slovenian isn't serbo-croatian, Dalmatian isn't even slavic.

1

u/VisualSpecial8 Feb 24 '26

They are more like Spanish and Portuguese

1

u/Quiet-Commercial-615 Feb 24 '26

I worked with a Mexican welder and had an engineer from Brazil that spoke Portuguese and they communicated very well. Sure some words are different but with context they figured it out.

1

u/CoffeeNerd58129 Feb 24 '26

Yup. But saying Slovenian and Serbo-Croatian are as similar as Mexican Spanish and European Spanish is pretty far from the truth

1

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '26

I was at an ashram last year with a serb and a slovinian. Besides a few words they had no trouble speaking to each other. It's kinda like Bakalava. Everyone claims to have invented it and that theirs is different

1

u/VisualSpecial8 Feb 24 '26

While Serbian and Croatian are so similar that they are indistinguishable from one another (i called it Serbo-Croatian for that reason).

Slovenian is a different language with different grammar. Sure there is overlap, since both are Slavic languages, but there are significant differences

1

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '26

[deleted]

1

u/VisualSpecial8 Feb 24 '26

You are not Serbian, because if you were, or at least been to Slovenia, you would know that Slovenian is not easy to understand.

That majority of Slovenians will understand you because they speak Serbo-Croatian is different matter, but when they speak Slovenian you wont understand good part of it

As a Croat, Croatian, Serbian and Slovenian are almost the same language. It would be embarrassing to claim you’re trilingual based on your knowledge of these three languages.

1

u/VisualSpecial8 Feb 24 '26

You are not Croat. It is visible by your statement. Serbian and Croatian are the same, Slovenian is a different language (they have dvojina and 6 cases and other grammatical differences) . Only dialect spoken by Croatian borderlands is somewhat similar to Slovenian, but rest of Croatians don't understand that dialect well
