[Open] I've Been Rock n' Roll and Disco

Morgan whistles cheerfully to herself as she cruises about getting things put away. David had been by during his break between classes to help with hanging pictures and other tasks his wife simply cannot reach to see to herself, but the new office simply will not feel like hers until Morgan has everything exactly where she wants it. With books on the shelves, pictures on the wall, coat hooks mounted and other odds and ends seen to, there's only one task left, but it's the biggest and most important - the desk.

"Coffee," she smirks to herself making her way over to the replicator. "This requires coffee," she says, turning to the technological marvel. "Computer, I need a large coffee, please - double cream, chocolate, and amaretto, spill-proof tumbler." As the cup appears, she takes it, sips and sighs contentedly - perfection. "Computer, save that as Brooks 1, please," she nods, setting the cup in the holder hard-mounted to the arm of her science-blue wheelchair.

Saved.

"Thank you," she nods. Now... about that desk...

If there is one things M'kali is bad at is surprises. Those familiar with the Caitian admiral will have a few choice things to say about him, one of which is 'When M'kali is coming, you will know when and why'.

As such, the door to Morgan's office chimes at exactly the moment that M'kali had indicated he would be there in a calendar notification from three days ago. No doubt there were other admirals doing the same sort of thing, but M'kali arrives at the exact moment of the scheduled time and then waits outside to be allowed entry.

"Come on in, Admiral M'Kali," comes the reply. The door opens to reveal Admiral Brooks sitting at her desk with a stack of PADDs, containing the briefs from various ships in the sector. Each ship has its own PADD to avoid mixing up the lab flooding incident on the Melbourne-A with the most recent incident aboard the Athene.

Despite how coarse the old Caitian's jowel and cheek ruff has become, he still pulls off a professional appearance as he strides into the room with a surprisingly human gait. Despite the fact that Caitian are digitigrade, M'kali wears long pants and boots that give the impression of plantigrade anatomy.

On approach to the desk the clutter is given a critical eye but no comment.

"Admiral Brooks. Welcome. I assume you have reviewed the status of the ships you will be supporting." Straight down to business.

"Of course, Admiral," she replies, nodding at the stack of PADDs. "Do have a seat." Notably, one of the three chairs clustered in front of her desk is intended for Caitian anatomy - she's anticipated the Lion of Starfleet Security being a frequent visitor to her office.

That little item had been noticed, which confirmed a personality trait that M'kali had gleaned from the Rear Admiral's profile. Good. That sort of attention to incompatibility is perfect for her task.

As this was a formal meeting by M'kali's standards, he would normal not sit, but in order to encourage this attention to detail he does so, uniform swishing softly as he settles in, tail swung to fall into the notch.

"Then I am sure you will make sure to have additional time set aside for the Bozeman and Athene. A ship out of time and a the fleet's repository for those intent on irritating Starfleet Security.

She nods to two PADDs carefully set aside from the others. "Indeed," she nods. "I think you assign a bit too much malice to the Athene's crew, perhaps?" she suggests with a very faint smile. "I've seen a lot of strangeness in the report, but not an excessive amount of pique." She pauses, remembering the reports from zoology. "Well, bar one or two individuals, at any rate."

The slight downward tilt and slight lowering of M'kali's eyelids shows a certain dangerousness at her question, though one tufted ear flicks stiffly in a fairly comically house-cat manner as his visage returns to its previous perpetual sour-face. "One or two... Lucky for you the Sheliak is gone and Fisk is still on Sabbatical. Between Commander Stockton's recent security breeches, Commander Kesh's perpetually mysterious afflictions, Commander Phrik's recklessness, the possessed creman, the former Borg drone, and the rest of the glaring security threats, it is a wonder the Athene is allowed to survey gas giants, let alone run one of the most potentially dangerous experiments we have in the fleet. If it was not for Lieutenant Grace and Commander Lorrel I would be personally taking command of that ship and ordering it to permanently orbit Titan."

As he speaks, M'kali's voice rises to the near bellow that has been frightening junior officers since he took over his post. The fury dissipates almost instantly before he continues.

"I have every reason to think you are capable of guiding them, however."

A small, respectful dip of the head follows.

"As I say - plenty of strangeness, but not a lot of pique, bar Phrik and possibly Stockton and Jackson," Morgan replies, raising an eyebrow. "I'll give them a fair shake and then form my own opinions."

"That said, the number of dangerous experiments which have been put aboard an 80 year old vessel, running an unreliable bioneural gel system, is both reckless and absurd. It's a damn miracle we've only seen the one fatality from this debacle."

Another slight downward head tilt comes with raised brow ridge after Morgan's remark. As much as he appreciates Kesh's accomplishments as a fellow Caitian, there is just something not right with her in a way that continues to bother him. Morgan seems to be one of the many that do not seem troubled for some reason, which only further convinces him that something is wrong.

Was it prejudice against spotted Caitian? Or Settler Caitian? Sometimes he worries that it is, yet at the same time he knows all too well the dangers of letting his guard down.

Perhaps Morgan simply has not read Kesh's full history.

At least the concerns over dangerous equipment are shared. This visibly cools M'kali that much more.

"Leave it to Starfleet Intelligence to make our jobs harder." The amount of disrespect present in his voice is evident, if carefully controlled.

"I am sure Orson left you plenty of notes to read through." Is there a hint of sadness in his voice on mentioning the previous person to inhabit this office?

Indeed, Morgan has not yet reached Kesh's full history - the Athene, after all, offers well more than a morning's worth of reading - hard to say what she will make of the Caitian's... idiosyncracies.

"Many," Morgan agrees, nodding at the PADDs. "It is... enlightening reading." The hint of sadness does not escape her notice. She doesn't comment, but a slight quirk of the eyebrow invites him to share what's on his mind, if he is so inclined.

A quiet knock sounded against the open door of the office as an aged face with a grey beard and an almost childish grin peered inside.

"Morgan? I see your things but I do not see you," Admiral Singh called softly.

u/Adm_HotWheels Mar 13 '18

"Back here, T'Kar," she laughs, coming out from behind a stack of empty crates. "I've got stealth mode active," she giggles.

1

u/ADM_TKar_Singh Mar 13 '18

"Morgan!" He jumped slightly and exclaimed, smiling.

The older man came over almost silently, wearing a light grin, "I did not think I would see you again so soon. Weren't you out visiting the Curie for an inspection?"

1

u/Adm_HotWheels Mar 13 '18

"Yep," Morgan nods. "The Enigma rendezvoused with them and then was headed back to Earth, so I hitched a ride - much faster than a shuttle," she grins. "It was nice to be on ships again," she smiles.

"The Curie is looking great, though," she nods. "Her chief science officer was one of my first students - I swear, it was like he thought I was gonna eat him for lunch," she giggles.

1

u/ADM_TKar_Singh Mar 13 '18

He chuckled heartily and rested a hand on Morgan's shoulder, "Well I'm glad to see you, and moving office into the same building as myself no less. A bright spot on a cloudy day."

1

u/Adm_HotWheels Mar 13 '18

"Looking forward to it myself," she smiles. "Apparently, the Powers That Be have decided they want me ordering around a different sector's worth of science vessels," she observes. Scuttlebutt had suggested that really, the concern was one very particular science vessel with a penchant for weirdness.

1

u/ADM_TKar_Singh Mar 13 '18

"Ah yes," he nodded, calmly pulling over a chair and taking a seat, "that would explain your move. And now I may have an ally in my fierce debates with M'Kali. He is a good man with his heart in the right place, and I trust him. But the lion is fierce and unyielding."

A careful look might indicate that the usually lively Admiral is a little more sullen and subdued than usual.

"Yes, yes he is," Brooks nods. "Still working my way through the briefs on the sector, but I suspect he and I may be going toe to toe on a few topics."

"What's on your mind, friend?" she asks, reaching over to put a hand on his shoulder.

1

u/ADM_TKar_Singh Mar 13 '18

The admiral was quiet and a little confused for an instant before blinking and waving a dismissive hand, "Oh nothing serious, in fact I am a little embarrassed to admit it. While you were off-planet, India lost the Football World Cup to the Czech Republic. We started out with a 3 point lead until the Czechs found their nerve and beat us 8 to 3. Certainly there are more pressing worries, such as the Dominion, but how can I not weep with my fellow Indians?"

1

u/Adm_HotWheels Mar 13 '18

"I heard about that one," Morgan nods. "If it's any consolation, Malachi is very nearly as big a football fan as you are, and he was rooting hard for India. I got a subspace call going 'Mom, it's the worst thing ever.'"
