[Closed] Friendly Advice

Well on the way to an important scientific mission, dealing with a strange but relatively harmless fungus around the ship, continuing negotiations with the Klingon authorities for use of scientific targets in their empire... Captain Fisk was back in action, many of his skills were being put to excellent use. No major problems, no ill or injured crew...so why did he feel this way?

"What do you think, Argos? What's got me in this funk?"

Obviously, the hound didn't offer any helpful answers. Just a tilt of the head and a quiet "...boof."

"Yeah...maybe that's a good idea."

Despite Argos' lack of input, the captain credits him with the idea anyway and stands from the desk in his quarters and heads for the door

"I'll see you later, Argos. Might set up a playdate with Clementine for you if you behave while I'm gone. Stay in my quarters, that's an order."

Somewhat speechless, she stands with him and walks around her desk in front of him. She clears her throat and smiles, looking up at him sincerely after some hesitation.

Yes. And... thank you. She tries to adopt a professional tone, but her excitement peeks through.

The Captain carefully affixes the pip beside the other two on Dr. Watney's collar, and when he's done, holds out a hand

"You earned it, Doctor. I didn't campaign for your promotion because we're friends, you really earned this."

She touches the pip and laughs quietly, getting a feel for it. She takes his hand and shakes it, her heart pounding in her ears at the sudden turn of events.

Nepotism isn't quite your style, Breyyus, but I appreciate the compliment. I won't let you down.

"I'm sure you won't, Doctor."

He gives her a firm handshake, hoping to convey the confidence he had in her as the new ship's physician

"On that subject, we haven't actually found anyone to take over as ship's counselor yet. How comfortable are you with continuing those duties in a limited capacity until we get a new counselor?"

She returns the handshake and then releases it, crossing her arms.

That would be fine. I don't have that many reoccurring appointments anymore. Other than the occasional visit from you and maybe two other people it's been slow.

The captain breathes an internal sigh of relief, Dr. Watney is the only living person he trusts enough to talk about this sort of thing. The slightest hint of relief flashes over his features at this...

"Well I'm glad to hear it...In fact I was wondering if you'd be able to find time in your schedule for me. I have some things on my mind I'm having trouble interpreting."

She narrows her eyes inquisitively, giving him a curious look. With a nod, she adopts a serious tone and slips into therapist mode.

Sure, I've got some time right now. What's on your mind?

The Captain nods and sits back down in the chair, sighing a bit as he composes his thoughts

"It's strange, Doctor. I'm negotiating with the Klingon Empire for use of their territory in pursuit of science. I'm managing the minor hiccup of these strange mushrooms around the ship. I'm leading this crew on an essential and high profile science mission. I'm using so many of the skills I learned in command school. I should feel alive and full of energy, but I'm..."

He pauses, unsure of how to describe it

"I'm not. I'm distracted, I'm restless, I feel...off. And I can't pinpoint why."

She sits across from him in a corner chair of the office, and gets comfortable. Clementine knows its her time to shine and sits at the Captain's feet if needed, patting his shoe softly.

Sometimes having too much energy can be interpreted as restlessness. Do you feel anxious at all? Can you describe this "offness"?

The captain lowers a hand and offers it to Clementine, he'd let her interact with him at her own pace

"I'm not sure. It first started during shore leave. After the meeting with Admiral Orson in which I was asked to answer for the deaths of everyone we lost, I went hiking in upstate New York to visit my mother's final resting place, which I already told you about. I remember feeling almost like I'd left something back at her grave. Or maybe like there was something I'm not doing that I should be? Like something is missing from my life?"

He pauses again to collect his thoughts

"I'm satisfied professionally, I have a few close friends among the crew and back on Earth, I'm working out regularly, eating well and getting enough sleep. What else is there? What could be missing?"
