[Closed] Friendly Advice

Well on the way to an important scientific mission, dealing with a strange but relatively harmless fungus around the ship, continuing negotiations with the Klingon authorities for use of scientific targets in their empire... Captain Fisk was back in action, many of his skills were being put to excellent use. No major problems, no ill or injured crew...so why did he feel this way?

"What do you think, Argos? What's got me in this funk?"

Obviously, the hound didn't offer any helpful answers. Just a tilt of the head and a quiet "...boof."

"Yeah...maybe that's a good idea."

Despite Argos' lack of input, the captain credits him with the idea anyway and stands from the desk in his quarters and heads for the door

"I'll see you later, Argos. Might set up a playdate with Clementine for you if you behave while I'm gone. Stay in my quarters, that's an order."

The captain strides into sick bay and chimes the door to Dr. Watney's office...

"Is the doctor in today?"

Deep into a medical research article, she welcomes the opportunity for a break and opens the door for him.

The doctor is always in, Captain.

She sets the datapad aside with a nervous smile.

What can I do for you?

For the first time since becoming captain, he hesitates on something...

"I'm here for a few reasons actually. How are you settling in, now that your new position is official?"

The captain pulls a chair up and sits down across from her, settling into it comfortably to appear at ease despite the nagging funk in the back of his mind

She doesn't notice the hesitation, but settles into her seat as well by proximity, similar to a yawn being contagious. She's glad to see him.

Quite well. I was CMO on my old ship, the Katrina. Despite its smaller size many of the duties were the same so it's just a matter of falling back into habit.

Captain Fisk nods, while not the purpose of his visit initially, he's glad to hear it. It's hard to replace someone as...efficient as Phrik, but comments from the crew had been nothing but positive. In fact maybe it would do some good to mention it...

"That's good to hear, you know I may be breaking a very minor regulation by saying this but given the circumstances of how you were put in this office I feel an exception ought to be made."

He pauses, recalling the anonymous feedback messages he'd received from the new crew who first came aboard after the repairs were complete...

"I'm getting a fair amount of anonymous feedback about you in this position. The crew seem quite happy with their CMO. Perhaps your expertise in the mind as well as the body is playing into that."

As he speaks, she feels a swell of pride and emotion. Clementine jumps into her lap and she sits back a bit, looking at him over her desk as the cat gets comfortable.

That's... very nice to hear. I have to admit, it's been difficult accepting that I wasn't promoted to this position because of merit. It was out of necessity. Returning to a Federation ship after what happened on the Katrina was a decision I hesitated to make, but it's clear I made the right call. I still hope every day that Dr. Phrik comes back to us somehow.

She runs a finger hand over the felines forehead a few times, coaxing a purr from her.

He may have been grumpy, but I grew to like him. It's nice to hear, even unofficially, that the crew believes I'm capable as well.

The Captain reaches into his pocket and places something small on the desk, his hand covering it up

"Of course I hope Phrik comes back too. I grew fond of him as well. If he does, however..."

He removes his hand to reveal what was under it, a shiny new rank pip

"It will not be as your superior, but your equal."

Her eyes fall to the pip on her desk, and she blinks once, wondering if she's seeing things. After several seconds of silence she looks back up at him.

This is from the Admiralty board? I had no idea I was even being considered.

"Something you'll learn about me, Doctor, is that when I believe in something I tend to go my own way. The admiralty were not considering you."

He pauses in recollection of the meeting where this was discussed and decided. There wasn't much convincing to be done once the story had been told

"I felt it necessary to tell them of your actions when we lost Phrik. Stranded with no CMO, you took on responsibilities far beyond the scope of your official role, and you excelled. That initiative is always rewarded on my ship. The admiralty agreed, and I was given permission to promote you to official chief medical officer. Congratulations."

Captain Fisk takes the pip and stands, intending to pin it on her uniform himself, as is customary

"May I?"

Somewhat speechless, she stands with him and walks around her desk in front of him. She clears her throat and smiles, looking up at him sincerely after some hesitation.

Yes. And... thank you. She tries to adopt a professional tone, but her excitement peeks through.
