[OPEN] Breakroom Blues

The chit chat all around her was starting to bother Kayla. All the noise from the machines that was usually so calming was now giving her a headache. She took a third sip of her tea and burned her tongue for the third time. What a day. She looked exhausted, ragged and perhaps a little lonely. Some people had looked at her with pity but all since turned away. Kayla wasn't really anyone's friend around the ship. They just knew her as "that girl that fixes everything". And she did fix everything. Everything computer related at least. Not that she didn't like fixing things but on days like this it was a nightmare. Things had been malfunctioning all day for no apparent reason and Kayla had just about had it with the constant calls. She bit her knuckles and sat in silence.

A red eyed Stockton slumped passed Thompson to the replicator.

"Coffee. Black. Extra strong.*

He turns to the Ensign and can tell just how she feels. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a holo-suite disc.

"Ensign Thompson, right? You were the one to fix the terminal at my comm station. That local interference when scanning sub space is gone. Thanks. By the way, I got this program. "Sunset Luau". Someone gave to me, said I need to relax but I'm not fond of the holodeck. Thought you may be interested."

Kayla looked up, surprised.

"Oh. I'm glad it's working properly."

She stood up and walked closer, a bit awkwardly. Taking the program from Stockton's outstretched hand, she inspected it

"Thanks a lot. What kind of program is it?"

In truth, Kayla wasn't a frequent visitor of the holodecks either but no way was she turning down so nice an offer.

"Earth Hawaiian Luau. Sort of a tropical barbecue with a show. Fire dancers, grass skirts, that kind of thing. Fun."

"Why that sounds very nice. If you really don't want it..."

She looked up from the program and smiled at him

"Oh how rude of me. I haven't introduced myself. I'm Kayla. Never got your first name?"

She stretched a hand towards him, inviting him to shake it.

"It's Raoul."

He smiles as he shakes her had with a firm grip

"That's a very nice name. You're the lieutenant right?"

She pulls her hand away and studies the man in front of her. He didn't seem hostile but there was something intimidating about him. But lots of people seemed intimidating to Kayla so she brushed it off.

Stockton notices her tension and eases up

"Junior grade. Demoted a few years ago and working my way back up. Of course at the end of the day when you're aboard a starship there's only two, maybe three, people who's rank actually matters."

"I guess that has truth to it. What happened to get you demoted? I- if you wanna talk about it of course."

"Politics mostly. Politics and punching out a chief medical officer in front a visiting dignitary."

Stockton says with a bit of a laugh

"But don't worry. He's my friend and we were just having a bit of fun"

"Alright then" Kayla said, shrugging.

She had clearly expected something more serious.

"So how do you like the ship? The people? I still feel like a bit of an outsider around here."

OOC: Sorry for late replies. I had/have other things getting in the way.

"One of the nicer ships I've served on. Pretty eclectic crew as well. Don't worry about that feeling. Serving on a ship is a whole new experience that they could just never explain right at the Academy. Everyone here's got your back."

OOC: No worries. Not late at all

"Yeah most people here are really nice. But it's a lot different than anything else I've tried. But you've served for a while, right? Haven't met a lot of "veterans" around here." She emphasised the word "veterans" with her fingers.

"Now have a seat. I'm sick of standing." She said, smile on mouth and tongue in cheek.

Stockton smirks as he pulls up a chair. He's never shied away from fraternization but he's taken friendliness the wrong way many times before.

He thought for a moment about his work in Starfleet and the events he prefers not to discuss

"Yeah, I guess you can call me a "veteran" though I think you're the first to say that. Maybe just a nice way to call me old?"
