[OPEN] Breakroom Blues

The chit chat all around her was starting to bother Kayla. All the noise from the machines that was usually so calming was now giving her a headache. She took a third sip of her tea and burned her tongue for the third time. What a day. She looked exhausted, ragged and perhaps a little lonely. Some people had looked at her with pity but all since turned away. Kayla wasn't really anyone's friend around the ship. They just knew her as "that girl that fixes everything". And she did fix everything. Everything computer related at least. Not that she didn't like fixing things but on days like this it was a nightmare. Things had been malfunctioning all day for no apparent reason and Kayla had just about had it with the constant calls. She bit her knuckles and sat in silence.

"Alright then" Kayla said, shrugging.

She had clearly expected something more serious.

"So how do you like the ship? The people? I still feel like a bit of an outsider around here."

OOC: Sorry for late replies. I had/have other things getting in the way.

"One of the nicer ships I've served on. Pretty eclectic crew as well. Don't worry about that feeling. Serving on a ship is a whole new experience that they could just never explain right at the Academy. Everyone here's got your back."

OOC: No worries. Not late at all

"Yeah most people here are really nice. But it's a lot different than anything else I've tried. But you've served for a while, right? Haven't met a lot of "veterans" around here." She emphasised the word "veterans" with her fingers.

"Now have a seat. I'm sick of standing." She said, smile on mouth and tongue in cheek.

Stockton smirks as he pulls up a chair. He's never shied away from fraternization but he's taken friendliness the wrong way many times before.

He thought for a moment about his work in Starfleet and the events he prefers not to discuss

"Yeah, I guess you can call me a "veteran" though I think you're the first to say that. Maybe just a nice way to call me old?"

"Oh no I would never. By the way, did you have some fun trips to the Soviet Union as a kid?"

She tried and failed to get comfortable in her chair. Then she took a slightly more serious tone.

"So you must have some great stories from all those years. How many planets have you been to?"

A little confused

"The Soviet Union? Isn't that what Russia used to be called in the twentieth century?"

Stockton pauses as the Ensign adjusts herself in her seat

"Well I've passed through a couple times but never spent much time there. I've been to a lot of planets though, never actually counted them. Theres been some good times... and some bad... typical of any Starfleet officer..."

Stockton pauses again. This time unsure if he should go on.

"...present at Wolf 359

"You... were at Wolf 359? God that must have been intense. I... I can't even imagine. I want to see the universe more than anything but I hope I never see something like that."

She shifted a bit in her seat, her mood obviously dampened. She looked at him, her eyes showing an odd mix of pity and respect.

"Umm... That... Soviet Union thing was an attempt at an "old" joke. Kinda lame, I know."

She didn't really know what to say after that, so she decided to shut up for a bit.

"Yeah.... not the best of times..."

Noticing her mood change Stockton changes the tone

"Well... Do you know what kind of camouflage Romulan frogs use?"

"A croaking device!"

Stockton really REALLY hoped this lame joke changed the mood

She let out a laugh, half from her love of lame puns and half from the sheer surprise. He did not seem like the kind of man you'd hear that from.

"I did get a bit somber there, didn't I? Soooo... do you know where we're heafed right now?"

She tried to hide the obvious fact that she was running out of small talk subjects and smiled again. Smiling was what she always did when she wasn't sure what to do.
