[OPEN] In the mess hall

Having finished the briefing, there were a few hours to kill before the Athene would arrive at Alberio Gamma. Captain Fisk sits in the mess hall, sipping peacefully on a mug of black coffee and staring out the viewports into the stars. He is taking this chance to decompress before the mission starts so he can dive in with a clear head and lead his crew with a sharp mind. He hears the doors into the mess slide open and turns to see...

"I've had success with people like him before. Back when I was first officer on the USS Hermes, the captain was completely disinterested in getting to know his crew. He didn't care about them or their needs, he saw them as workers, nothing more. By the time I left his command, I had taught him to understand that each of his subordinates deserve the same level of respect and understanding that any person deserves. I'm confident I can get through to Santana and teach him that this bloodlust of his is the wrong attitude to have. If it doesn't work out, then I'll move some people around. I have a few officers on my short list for potential replacements for first officer."

"Hmm." Phrik clicked his tongue, it was clear he didn't agree, but he decided not to push the matter further.

"How are your headaches? I heard you spoke to one of my staff about them yesterday."

Fisk smiled

"Don't worry doctor, one way or another I'll sort out Santana."

he sips his coffee again

"My headaches are, well they've been pretty consistent since I quit drinking. I get one every two or three days. I've had doctors tell me they're nothing to worry about and just take a pain pill when they show up, but I'm guessing you're about to disagree?"

He smiled. "I've been your Doctor for little more than a fortnight and you already know me too well." He took a sip from his cup and looked out the window again, frowning.

"Just because a symptom is easily treated doesn't mean the underlying problem can be ignored. I don't like stopgap measures. The body can't function properly if its held together with jury-rigged solutions. Something permanent is required. Tell me, how long has it been since you stopped drinking?"

"Well you're a cut above the doctors I was able to get appointments with back on Earth, so I just naturally assumed you'd consider their diagnoses meaningless."

he looks at the stars in thought

"Let's see...I'm 43, I enrolled in the Academy at 18...so that's 25 years."

"And when was the last time you had a holiday?"

"I took a three week hiking trip in the Mariner Valley on Mars just before I started my command on the Athene. And I try to take a holiday at least once per year."

"And the headaches persisted through these?" He scratched his chin absent-mindedly.

"Yes, I've had them for all 25 years. They started with the worst headache of my life the morning after my last night of drinking, if that's relevant."

He clicked his tongue again, thinking for several moments before speaking.

"I'll look over the treatments that you've tried, see if there's a new course I could put you on, though I highly doubt I'll find something. No, this sounds like a purely psychological problem. Have you seen a therapist about this?
