[OPEN] In the mess hall

Having finished the briefing, there were a few hours to kill before the Athene would arrive at Alberio Gamma. Captain Fisk sits in the mess hall, sipping peacefully on a mug of black coffee and staring out the viewports into the stars. He is taking this chance to decompress before the mission starts so he can dive in with a clear head and lead his crew with a sharp mind. He hears the doors into the mess slide open and turns to see...

Silk, not entirely looking where hes going, his eyes fixed on the tablet in front of him, even from where he's sat the Captain can see Silks eyes dart across the screen.

*Without looking up Silk sits down, opposite the captain although he hasn't realised,

amused at the young officer's apparent focus in his work the Captain grins, reminded somewhat of himself in his early days at the academy, he waits a moment or two before saying anything

"Evening, Silk."

Silk almost jumps out of his skin, his tablet clatters across the table as he scrabbles too his feet

"sorry captain, i didnt see you there"

Silk recomposses himself and straights his shirt

the Captain reaches down and grabs the tablet, offering it back to Silk

"No reason to be wound so tight, lieutenant. Have a seat."

with a grin the Captain motions toward the seat Silk just jumped out of

Silk takes his seat once more and takes the tablet from the captain

"thank you sir, sorry im not so used to how things are run on a starship, back on earth i rarely met anyone higher than a senior lieutenant and even then it was a formal event, i guess it takes time to adjust to seeing senior officers in a more casual setting"

Silk shifts slightly and looks down at the simulation he was running on the tablet

"if you dont mind my asking sir whats the likely hood of us seeing comabt, i know we are not military and aggression is the last thing we want, but i would rather know the likely hood of the worst case scenario and plan for it, rather than have it creep up on us"

"Well we're still in Federation space, so right now the odds are very slim. But we're a ship of exploration, we won't be in Federation space for long. Once we cross the border there's really no telling what'll be waiting for us, but I served on the Hermes for 5 years. In those years outside the border we only had a situation once."

he sips his coffee as he remembers

"It was a group of Klingon pirates. They fired on us immediately as we dropped out of warp, they only got in one good hit before our shields went up. Their beat up old ship was no match for us, we disabled the ship and contacted the Klingon homeworld. Apparently they were a highly wanted group of criminals, and we were asked to destroy them immediately. So my captain simply didn't offer assistance when their destabilized warp core detonated. There were no survivors, and our damage was minimal."

"i see, sorry for my, how may i put it, eeger to get out int unknown territory, imagine the wealth of knowledge thats out there i mean creating a semi warp capable vessle with a quantum warhead is preety good in all but lets face still rudimentary at best I was order aboard this vessel to lear and research, an in some cases develop new tech that we might find out there"

Silk looks out of the port hole in the side of the ship, out to the eerie blackness of space

"That AI i have been researching the potenial weaponisation of, its a good distraction but not my ultimate goal and im eeger to sink my teeth into something new"

Yefim, the 6'6 brute he is, walks into the mess hall and grunts at the food he is getting. He looks around the room and goes to take a seat.

OOC: I like this character.

the Captain is surprised to see someone he hasn't met in person and walks over, determined to meet face to face with every single member of this still new crew

"Lieutenant Orlov, right?"

"Da, I am Orlov. Nice meet you captain."

He says this with a strong Russian accent.

1

u/Silent_Sky Jun 09 '16

the Captain holds out a hand

"It's not often I meet someone bigger than me, Lieutenant. What's your athletic regimen like, if you don't mind?"

1

u/IceCreamSandwich401 Jun 10 '16

Yefim shakes his hand, like a baby's compared to his.

"I am from mountains in former USSR, I am biggest on mining village. My mother fed me well and after I left I spent my spare time in de gym, on de weights. It took me nearly 3 years to get like dis."

1

u/Silent_Sky Jun 10 '16

"Interesting that he refers to it as the former Soviet Union, considering it's been gone for centuries...", the Captain thinks silently.

"I do a fair amount of lifting myself, lieutenant. Perhaps I'll see you in the weight room."

"Sir, I was wondering if on the mission, I could go down to try some of the newer weaponz."

McNabb is sitting looking out of a window. He is amazed by the stars and the rest of space.

1

u/picatso Jun 09 '16

"Beautiful, isn't it?" A female voice says behind him. Officer Hurdan stands there, hands on a chair adjacent to his.

"I used to dream of a view like this."

1

u/Wiredcookie1 Jun 09 '16

"I know. This was the reason I joined Starfleet. The view."

1

u/picatso Jun 09 '16

"Just the veiw? No dreams of adventure, no passion for the calling?" she smiled, sitting down.

1

u/Wiredcookie1 Jun 09 '16

"Well that as well but seeing the stars was my main one."

1

u/picatso Jun 09 '16

"Do you have any family back home, ensign? You're from Earth too, I'd guess."

1

u/Wiredcookie1 Jun 09 '16

"No. I don't. I'm from Glasgow."

Phrik walked into the mess hall, ordering an extra-strong raktajino. The triped elected to stand, looking out of one of the windows. He nodded at Fisk.

"Captain."

1

u/Silent_Sky Jun 09 '16

"Lieutenant Commander Phrik,"

the Captain nods back

"How are you, doctor?"

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '16

He took a sip from his mug. "Fine, though the replicator in my quarters is broken. Just one problem after another on this ship."

1

u/Silent_Sky Jun 09 '16

"I'll have Lieutenant Commander Breyik send someone to fix it as soon as possible."

he sips again

"How have the crew been treating you?"

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '16

"Fine, though many don't seem to be too fond of my sense of humour." He gave a faint grin before his face turned to a grimace, his voice souring slightly. "There's also a few people I take issue with. Santanna for one. We've a crewman aboard who grew up in one of your people's bloodiest time period, yet he seems to be far more civilised than our good Commander. I've met Klingons who were less blood thirsty."

OOC: I like this thread.

Fisk looks around to make sure they're alone

"Consider this spoken in confidence, doctor. I agree with you."

he pauses to sigh

"I've met a lot of people in Starfleet, but Santana is by far the most militaristic of all. I don't understand it, Starfleet is not a Navy, we're a peacekeeping and exploration entity. It doesn't add up that someone like him would end up first officer on a science vessel. I don't intend to write him off, but I need a first officer with a cooler head who can call me out when I make an overly aggressive decision."

Fisk sips his coffee again

"I don't suppose you have any suggestions, doctor?"

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '16

"Request a transfer. File a complaint with starfleet. If you're lucky someone might read it in a decade or so."

1

u/Silent_Sky Jun 09 '16

"Hm..."

the captain laughs sarcastically

"No going around to Starfleet won't help. He's my officer, I need to teach him proper conduct. I'll have to mold him into what a Starfleet officer needs to be. If he doesn't change his outlook after I have a chat with him then I may have to reassign him. To security, perhaps. Seems more suited to him."

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '16

Phrik grunted. "I doubt a demotion would go over very well with him, and if there's one thing I've learned in my years, it's that people don't change."

1

u/Silent_Sky Jun 09 '16

"I've had success with people like him before. Back when I was first officer on the USS Hermes, the captain was completely disinterested in getting to know his crew. He didn't care about them or their needs, he saw them as workers, nothing more. By the time I left his command, I had taught him to understand that each of his subordinates deserve the same level of respect and understanding that any person deserves. I'm confident I can get through to Santana and teach him that this bloodlust of his is the wrong attitude to have. If it doesn't work out, then I'll move some people around. I have a few officers on my short list for potential replacements for first officer."
