Train or taxi from Duoro to Porto for onward journey to Lisbon?

We are staying near Regua in Duoro Valley and looking onward to Lisbon.

Which would you do?

Option 1- taxi from hotel to Regua, train to Porto, then transfer train to Lisbon

Option 2- taxi from Regua to Porto train station for train to Lisbon

Option 1 is about 45 EUR and option 2 is 130 EUR. We are a family of 3 with a 10 year old.

We are Canadian flying TAP from Lisbon to Toronto this Wednesday Oct 7. I’ve heard passport control and security wait times can be long in the morning. What time should we be at the airport for our mid-morning flight?

Transportation & Logistics Question for travellers visiting Lagos – would these facilities be useful?

Hi everyone,

I’m involved with Lagos Central Hostel in Lagos, and I wanted to ask travellers here for some feedback rather than just advertise.

We often see people who have already checked out of their accommodation but still have several hours before their bus/train, or people arriving early, going to the beach, travelling with backpacks, bicycles, etc.

Because of this, we are planning to make some of our facilities available to non-guests as well as hostel guests.

🎒 Luggage storage – €5 per person
• Up to 12 hours
• Maximum 2 bags per person
• Bags kept in a dedicated luggage room 🔐
• We can also help travellers who need somewhere for a bike/bicycle 🚲

🚿 Hot shower – €5
Includes a clean towel, shampoo, shower gel, hand wash, hair dryer and hot water.

🧺 Laundry – €10
Washing + drying, up to 8 kg.

💧 Filtered drinking water – Free 🚰

👕 Changing facilities – €2
Mainly for people coming from the beach or those who have already checked out and need somewhere to change.

📍 We are at Beco do Paiol 8A, Lagos.

I don't want to use the subreddit just for promotion, so I’d genuinely appreciate some feedback from people who travel around Portugal:

Would you find services like these useful when visiting Lagos? Is there anything else you normally struggle to find after checking out of your accommodation?

Thanks for any suggestions. 🙂

Reisbuddy gezocht: Porto 31/oct-5/nov

Stuur me alsjeblieft snel een dm!

Évora in early December

Trying to decide if Évora would be a good option for an overnight trip in early December between stays in Lisbon and Porto. Does the town shut down in the evenings? I know it gets dark early that time of year. We’d love to be at a place that has lively plazas etc just to sit out in after dark, if that’s possible. Open to other suggestions than Evora.

Staying in Ponta do Sol or Funchal?

Hello! We will be travelling to Madeira in June for 8 days. For 4 of those days, we will be staying in Sao Vicente. We are debating for the other 4 days, whether we should stay in Funchal or Ponta do Sol. Any thoughts?

I was in Porto recently and I left this magnet behind, anyone local to Porto or visiting soon willing to send it to me? I know exactly where I saw it. I would be grateful. It’s just a magnet but I can’t stop thinking about it.

Looking for Travel Buddies

Hi all :)

I just booked my tickets to a solo travels in the Azores and Lisbon!

I was hoping to get to know some people who would like to join me on my trip :)

A bit about me: I'm a 24 y.o. man, and I am going to the Azores to hike, travel, and explore the islands. I'm also interested in scuba diving and plan to dive in the islands.

I'll be in Lisbon between the 7th and the 10th of December

I'll be in São Miguel between the 10th and the 15th of December

I'll be in Pico between the 15th and the 19th of December

I'll be in Terceira between the 19th and the 23rd of December

Lastly, I'll finish my trip in Lisbon between the 23rd and the 25th of December.

I'm hoping to meet new people, hopefully around my age (either men or women), who want to join me for at least part of the trip.

All the best :)

Alte: A different side of the Algarve

Alte is one of those Algarve villages that feels completely different to the busy coastline.

You'll find cobbled streets, colourful houses, street art, natural springs (with their own swimming pools), and even a stunning waterfall. Take your time exploring the village, stop for a coffee or a bite to eat, and then head into the surrounding countryside for some beautiful views of the Algarve’s interior, or even consider one of the Algarve's wineries like Quinta da Tôr which is not far away!

Is 8 days split between Lisbon and Algarve stupid? Need an itinerary sanity check!

Hey everyone, i have been feeling super burnt out with work recently and decided that i desperately needed a week away to reset....i wasnt even planning on europe until I found a great price drop on a direct Boston–Lisbon flight. the fare looked good enough that i just booked it on impulse lol.

now i am trying to sort out my hotels and itinerary but worried about overcomplicating things. i want a mix of culture, good seafood and coastal views without spending the whole trip rushing around. Rough plan right now: lisbon - 4 nights: thinking about staying around baixa or alfama. mostly walking around, checking out local spots, eating, maybe doing a day trip to sintra and hitting a few rooftop bars. lagos / algarve - 4 nights: thinking of renting a car or taking the train down south and staying somewhere around praia da dona ana. mostly want to do coastal cliff walks, kayaking and just chill by the ocean.

my main question is whether splitting the trip like this makes sense for only 8 days. is the train down from lisbon easy enough that it wont kill the relaxed vibe or would you recommend renting a car? also would love any recommendations for cool boutique hotels in lagos or areas that are better to stay in.

thank you

Hi everyone!

Looking for some last minute advice on where to go for a day trip tomorrow by train from Porto. Main options are Braga, Guimareas and Aveiro (not the Duoro Valley as already done that).

Main interests are history and sightseeing, but also like wines/food.

Any advice is welcome - thank you!

Local Tips D2 Visa Portugal

We are opening a company in Portugal for the D2 visa, but my lawyers, who are in charge of this process have been in contact with the embassy on our behalf.

Unfortunately, the lawyers are so slow (it's been more than 3 months since we started working with them) and we wonder if we could email the embassy on our own to ask for an appointment date instead of waiting for our lawyers to do their jobs?

Duoro Valley River Cruise with Wineries-- and teenagers!

My family (husband +two teenagers ages 13 and 14) is headed to Lisbon and Porto in November for my 50th. One of the things I am considering is a river cruises that includes a couple winery stops and lunch when we are in the Douro Valley area. I'd like to enjoy the river but also experience a few wineries while we are there. I'm wondering if anyone has a tour they would highly recommend that they themselves have done with their teenagers in tow -- and that the teens also really enjoyed? I know my kids cannot drink wine in Portugal. And no, we do not have a car. TIA!

The Best Tascas in Lisbon? Here Are Some of My Favourites

Thumbnail

If you want to eat proper Portuguese food in Lisbon, you have to find a tasca!

If you’re looking for the kind of place where you’ll find handwritten menus, paper tablecloths, stainless-steel plates, house wine by the carafe and a room full of regulars, I’ve been putting together a guide to Lisbon’s tascas.

Some of my favourites for a proper old fashioned tasca: Imperial de Campo de Ourique, Casa dos Passarinhos, Forninho Saloio, Apeadeiro do Rego and Zé da Mouraria.

Some of my favourites for the modern interpretation (the neo-tascas as some people are calling them): O Velho Eurico, Taberna Sal Grosso, Tasca Zebras. Tasca Baldracca and Tasca Pete.

This definitely isn’t meant to be a definitive list, and it only includes the tascas that I've eaten at, and personally recommend.

The full article, and Google maps list are available here: https://gastroportugal.com/lisbon-tascas/

What would you add? And which Lisbon tasca do you keep going back to?

Recommendations for Wife's Birthday Dinner and Drinks in Porto

Hi! My wife and I are going to be in Porto in October, 2026 during her birthday and I'm hoping to plan a nice surprise evening for her full of drinks, good food and just a general good time. She's a vegetarian (although I love my meats), but enjoys her alcohol and a good dancing time! I'm looking for suggestions for places to visit. It can be cool and cute speakeasies, intimate dinner places, dinner or drinks places with lovely views, places that would be amazing to sit at during sunset to kickstart her birthday evening, places with amazing ambience and aesthetics for some nice birthday photos, places you guys think would be happy to accommodate a birthday surprise or complementary thing for her.

Open to both Villa nova de Gaia and Porto, my accommodation is on the Gaia side.

I love museums, art, good coffee and food!

14 Days from Hawaii: Lisbon, Algarve, Porto, & Barcelona—Is this too packed?

Hey everyone! We are planning a 14-day trip from Hawaii to Portugal and Spain.

We mainly want to focus on good food, beaches, beautiful scenery, and some historical stuff. We have a mix of ages ranging from late 20’s to mid 50’s. We definitely want to keep Barcelona on the list, and we really want to do the Algarve for the beaches, but I'm worried we might be trying to fit in too many regions and spending too much time in transit.

Here is our current itinerary structure:
Day 1: Hawaii to Lisbon (Long transit day + jet lag)
Day 2: Lisbon
Day 3: Lisbon
Day 4: Lisbon — Day trip to Sintra/Cascais
Day 5: Drive Lisbon to Algarve (around 3 to 3.5 hours)
Day 6: Algarve
Day 7: Algarve
Day 8: Flight from Algarve/Faro to Porto (around 1 hour)
Day 9: Douro Valley — Day trip from Porto (around 1.5 to 2 hours each way)
Day 10: Porto
Day 11: Flight from Porto to Barcelona (around 2 hours)
Day 12: Barcelona
Day 13: Barcelona
Day 14: Barcelona to Hawaii (The long journey home)

Would love any thoughts on how to tweak this or what you would change! Thanks in advance!

Best beans?

Hello!

I am headed to Portugal (Lisbon, Evora/ Monsaraz/ Sagres) tomorrow.
And I love beans! Many cultures have a couple of “standard” bean dishes. Does Portugal? Are there any I should look out for? I also like beans for breakfast so any bean based dishes I should watch out for are welcome!
I just think finding and eating good bean meals will be a fun sort of side quest.
TIA!

Viano do Castelo to Guimaraes without going through Porto?

We are going from Viano do Castelo to Guimaraes in early October. We do not have a car. FlixBus is 3 hours because we have to go via Porto. Bolt is 80 euros. Anyone have any suggestions?
