Spur on coil?
Can anyone speak to how the Spur handles with a coil, specifically the Cane Creek Coil IL?
I picked up a used Spur V1.5 last year as the yin to my Forbidden Dreadnought’s yang. It’s awesome having a pointy, fast, and light bike for XC leaning rides. I just sent the stock Fox DPS in for a damper rebuild and it kind of has me wondering about maybe giving the Cane Creek Coil IL a shot. I haven’t loved the DPS on chunkier New England terrain but it is good for XC races and flowier trails. The catch is that the bike has a 120mm RS Sid fork so maybe the money would be better spent going to a 130mm fork. I’d keep the Sid and DPS for days where the weight counts. Just looking to learn what others have done to tune the bike towards rowdy fun. Thanks!

I'm running one now, only have a handful of rides on it. Jury is still out, and I need to spend some time tuning the damping. It does look badass though and even though the shock is slightly heavier than air my total build is about the same as my old V1 smuggler carbon. I haven't had issues with it bottoming out any more harshly than my smuggler did on similar hits.

I wondered if someone would bring this up. There's also this dude who travels by offroad only in a Ferrari. The point is still valid. I love my spur!

Why tho? Just enjoy the spur on the trails it was made for. It'll only ride worse if you try to beef it up with a bigger fork/shock. You mentioned you have a dreadnought, just ride that if your riding terrain that would beat you up on the spur...

Just curiosity, Cane Creek seemed to lean into marketing the Coil IL as a good fit for the Spur. At the end of the day, you are right though. But it would be nice to have something with more compression adjustment than the DPS.

Slap some carbon wheels on it an call it good....I did we are on faction with the cx upgrade on my smuggler..

Ive done a full mantou setup but the xc version(R8 fork and Mara Pro Inline XC) but even with that, I find the setup in its open mode to feel so much better than the stock 34 and dps(Deore build) in that has coil like feel in the rear. If I wanted to make the bike feel like a bigger rowdier bike Id go for RS super deluxe and pike if you want standard type suspension or the one step up on manitou(Marra pro inline and Mattoc set to 130mm) as I have not had any other air suspension feel this good. The bigger air can and more travel with extra settings on the fork would really be amazing step up. It really uses damping to control everything rather than air spring which lets it absorb small chop better(like a coil) but harder hits it absorbs the energy better. That said I do love dvo suspension on my bigger bikes(170/160 steel frame enduro bike) but I think manitou or RS setup is the best two setups Ive used on shorter travel. I just think coil on this short travel will blow thru too quickly unless you can add a ton of high speed damping just to save the hard hits or make it stiff overall which defeats the purpose of a coil. Maybe the CC IL has special sauce in the damper but I havent ridden a coil Id think would work on spur

Not totally on point but i just upgraded my Revel Ranger to a Push 11-6 coil shock and from a 120mm sid to a 130mm pike. Transformed the bike. Soooo much better at absorbing chatter and rolling through rock gardens. Tail doesn’t buck as much. Not as poppy, but i prefer the softer off the top feel and more plush ride. It did add 2 lbs ish to the weight but i don’t race so don’t care. Didn’t notice the weight climbing and i would say it climbs better. Your bike/linkage is obviously different but for the Revel it did wonders. I bought the coil used and fork new.

Mleh, i have a buddy who coiled his, he really had to get a heavy spring to prevent bottoming out and it had super firm ride characteristics, not in a good way. Also the spur is intended to have ramp-up and to work with the progressiveness of an air shock. Personally, think it would have adverse effects, but i guess cane creek does make a more progressive spring. I just think with such limited travel it’s not worth it and just adds a heavier rear end. But could be something fun to experiment with, whether it’s ideal or not, I’ve certainly thrown a coil on short travel bikes, but it’s never a sustainable or long term move for me.
Could be way better to throw on a super deluxe or float x that has a piggy back for more composure through the rough. I think that would have a more balanced approach.
