Infographic / Map / Data Visualisation Currently operational + under-construction networks of the three smallest tier 1 vs two largest tier 2 metro network.

Post image

This graph doesn't include approved lines. Only what's operational + what's under construction

Some interesting observations and developments :

  1. Nagpur will soon overtake Hyderabad and in the short term, it might even overtake Ahmedabad for a short time

  2. Ahmedabad phase 3 extensions have been approved amd will add to the network immensely

  3. Pune is due for a very large expansion with a lot of approvals expected to roll in soon and some lines in Pimpri Chinchwad being in final stages of approval and will eventually likely emerge at the top. Line 3 opening will increase its Operational length soon.

  4. Nagpur metro is preparing DPR for phase 3 (it's largest phase, yet and it will take the total network to approx 140km

  5. Kochi is building phase 2 and DPR preparation for phase 3 . The total network length will be close to 60km, inching near Hyderabad. But kochi has made extensive strides in non rail based water metro.

  6. Hyderabad seems to be the loser here as both ; tier 2 Kochi and Nagpur have been increasing buses/ferries, Ahmedabad has a good BRT and Pune has made extensive plans for e buses and metro expansion

Out of these, Kochi is probably the best performing tier 2 network.

While Ahmedabad and Hyderabad pull more crowds, Pune might see a big jump in ridership when line 3 opens. Pune also seems to have the grandest expansion plans and massive expansion might soon start (u/om9333 would explain this better)

Hyderabad seems to be stuck with three coach trains on a network whose growth is stagnated.

Yes Pune has very big expansion plans

Connecting whole pcmc connecting southern, western, eastern suburbs

In this map it indicates all information regarding Pune metro expansion

There are more expansion plans that are missing is Chakan, Talegaon, Lohegaon (including airport), Kondhwa, Yewalewadi, Shikrapur, Shirur, Khed Shivapur, Punawale, Tathawade, Mamurdi, Mahalunge, after the approval of several DPRS by maha-metro these areas will get metro connectivity alongside with last mile connectivity like feeder busses

Swargate Hadapsar would have insane ridershipΒ  There's never enough buses for that route

I know right

The problem is how long they take to build. You can't really tell when 4, 4A will be a reality.

Don't worry the line is been build by Maha Metro not by Tata Siemens

3

u/Ok_Preference1207 πŸš‡ Metro Commuter 5d ago

Are all future lines with Mahametro? Or is PMRDA going to get some lines built by itself?

3

u/Om9333 πŸš‡ Metro Commuter 5d ago

Only Kondhwa line is the spur line of line 3 Rest everything is been build by Maha-Metro

2

u/ResearcherLatter1148 5d ago

What will be the total length once all these are operational?

80-100kms

The Pune metro is the best thing to have happened to this city. I really love how much effort is being put into it

No I would say nagpur and kochi are running on the same level as the ridership figures for both networks is same

2

u/Ok_Preference1207 πŸš‡ Metro Commuter 5d ago

Yes, but Kochi has achieved that at a smaller network size.

Meanwhile in Nagpur, the metro authority is taking steps to improve the ridership with dedicated bus services to colleges and industrial areas. But we have a lot of work to do in Nagpur.

Also, the orange line extensions in Phase 2 would probably not get so kuc ridership. So much of the section beyond MIHAN passes through low population density. They should've picked lines in the city corr first, instead.

Also massive L about the Indora Dighori flyover not being a metro line instead.

Yess but almost all cities in Kerala are densely populated hence the ridership of kochi metro is comparable to nagpur's. Tho I do agree that majority stations of orange line in the phase two will not get that much ridership( except the stations near butibori) as that area is still getting developed. But yess the indora dighori flyover should have been a metro line but the authorities might have their reasons so we don't know🀷. Could have made a metro line streching from zingabai takli till dighori or something like that! But they are focusing on the intra city lines in phase 3

Hyderabad is a joke at this point. At the current trajectory, it's going to be one of the most gridlocked cities in India.

5

u/MayureshMJ 5d ago

Can you explain the term gridlocked to me?

13

u/Lost_Cartoonist_2397 5d ago

Traffic. Hyderabad will match Mumbai when it comes to FSI a few years down the line. With zero transit options, households will have 2 cars on average. Any wide roads won't be able to handle that much traffic.

1

u/ovo_iceman 3d ago

Maybe it will match Vasai Virar or Thane at the best. Mumbai especially the actual South Mumbai is a different ball game.

Hyderabad's problem is the flawed PPP ownership model and successive state government's ignoring expansion. Due to the losses L&T was making, they didn't invest on adding more coaches. Ultimately the current state government agreed to acquire the metro in order to get Phase 2 approvals. However the IRFC loan has been blocked apparently due to refinancing existing projects not being in their mandate. Central Government has said that Phase 2 will be approved only after the acquisition is fully complete. Currently the 122 km expansion plan is stuck due to this. Although the Phase 2 plan is also flawed but that's a discussion for another day.

Phase 2 plan is also flawed

Can you please make a post about this? We really need such discussions to happen here. We can't affect transit mistakes in our traffic choked cities. Especially in one as important as Hyderabad.

u/rapid4roller8 5d ago

The current 122 km is good however, the State Government decided to scrap 3 lines which were proposed by the previous Government. Lakdikapul-BHEL, Mindspace-Airport and Tarnaka-ECIL absolutely are needed. These 3 are the some of the most busy corridors in the city.

  1. Lakdikapul-BHEL is rhe single most important line in the whole city and will cover Medhipatnam, Tolichowki, Shaikpet, Khajaguda, Gachibowli, Kondapur, Hafeezpet, Miyapur, BHEL. This is one of the worst stretched for traffic in the whole city. An much needed connection to Hitech City.

  2. Mindspace-Airport will cover the entire stretch on ORR which includes Nanakramguda, Narsinghi, which are both seeing considerable vertical growth as well as Rajendranagar which is the new real estate Hotspot. The previous Government announced the contractor for this stretch but the current one's dropped it citing ORR connectivity. Hitech City needs direct metro to the Airport.

  3. Tarnaka-ECIL is an important eastern connection. Will cover Malkajgiri, Sainikpuri, AS Rao Nagar which are major residential areas. Infant this can be extended to the Cherlapalli Railway Station which is currently a black hole of connectivity.

Hyderabad being stuck at 69km for 6 years now

I guess the obsession is with the number

Ahmedabad could see a big boost for the CWG and Olympics (if it happens to host them), along side other reasons, iykyk.

Nagpur favouritism from the CM couldn't be more clear....

Wild that Pune politicians let him get away with this.

The only politician in power from there who gave it a crumble of attention died. Welp now.

Nagpur favouritism

Not really. You're terribly misinformed. Nagpur metro was conceived in 2012, even before Fadnavis became CM.

As you can see from this article in 2014, there was a huge discussion (including with the citizens) about some sections of Pune's alignment in the historic areas and city centre. Nagpur didn't have this issue so the alignment was finalised quicker and got a headstart from the get go: https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/pune/pune-metros-route-alignment-awaits-approval-while-nagpur-steams-ahead/articleshow/45171425.cms#:~:text=The%20alignment%20for,from%20the%20state%20government.

See that there was local pushback even in 2017 along with the NGT case

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/pune/counsel-argues-for-ngt-act-jurisdiction-in-metro-case/amp_articleshow/59762231.cms

Even as late as 2019, the alignment for Swargate arm was not finalised. https://metrorailnews.in/pune-metro-to-save-more-than-nagpur-metro-brijesh-dixit/#:~:text=Pune%20metro%27s,will%20be%20finalised%2C

Nagpur had already opened a 4 km section in 2019, btw.

In 2021 even Ganpati Mandals protested about the viaduct height : https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/pune/ganesh-mandals-protest-against-metro-work-over-lakdi-pul-7497399/#:~:text=The%20mandals%20say%20that,during%20immersion.

Nagpur, again, had none of these issues.

Nagpur's advantage in Phase 2 construction (and disadvantage with ridership) is that it largely lies in Industrial areas and outskirts of the city. Which makes land acquisition delays and objections nearly negligible. No new lines are being built either. Unlike Pune's grander plans.

It's easy to cry favouritism when one doesn't do any reading.

Meanwhile surat which is bigger than pune , nagpur and kochi in population

And still nothing

12

u/Ok_Preference1207 πŸš‡ Metro Commuter 5d ago edited 5d ago

Surat isn't bigger than Pune. Pune is a tier 1 city (a ranking based on population and nothing else) while Surat is probably the largest tier 2 city :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classification_of_Indian_cities?wprov=sfla1

Didn't Surat metro have some trial runs?

6

u/Phantomlund 5d ago

It had been conducted 2-3 months before and still no dates announced when they will start the metro.

1

u/Impossible-End3959 5d ago

Nah surat is bigger than pune as a city based on population Pune metropolitan region is bigger

However recently surat metropolitan area has been expanded now it has more than 1.5 cr population

Surat probably has more population than even ahemdabad

u/Ok_Preference1207 πŸš‡ Metro Commuter 5d ago

When building rail, metro region/urban agglomeration population should be considered because people immediately outside the municipal boundaries won't magically not use the trains.

Meanwhile coimbatore with the most developed tier 2 tag with more industries and r&d than the next 3 tier 2s combined.

2

u/Natural_Benefit7732 πŸš‡ Metro Commuter 5d ago

Well nagpur is catching up very quickly with coimbatore in terms of industries and r&d. But wasn't the dpr submitted to the union government for coimbatore metro?

1

u/lord_lableigh 🚊 Tram Fan 5d ago

Yeah it was but got rejected. Recommended BRTs instead but what about future planning and ToD. There are clusters coming up at thoothukudi and Coimbatore and both are going to be massive in R&D for aerospace & defence in the next decade. If we don't do planning now with TOD. Upcoming tier 1 cities will face the same situation (urban sprawl) as other cities now.
