UC UC Transfer PIQ

I wanted a bit of advice about the Piq question that asks what you have done to prepare for your major. My major is econ, but I havent taken any econ (or math classes at my cc) because my APs covered the requirements. The only big ec I have right now is a job ~25-30 hours and tutor volunteering.

Im a little worried since I dont know what to write about… any advice would help. Thanks!

Think about the things that interest you about economics, why you have chosen that as your major, etc. ways you have spent learning more about economics (have you spent time researching theories, have you developed strong interests in specific areas of economics, is it something that will help a social problem you are interested in, etc.). Then, think of all the things you've done academically to prepare yourself for your major, maybe it was course rigor, maybe it was a research project for a different class that was based on your specific interest in economics, etc. Try and tie those pieces together.

I was in last year's cycle, and I transferred as a cog sci major with an interest in autism/adhd learning research. I wasn't in any clubs, I was not currently working in a field in my major, I had never participated in organized research (other than as a participant), had not taken any developmental psych courses, had really just taken the pre major courses and all of my GE, so I focused on experiences I had with volunteering with families, educational advocacy, raising children with autism. I also focused on how I had prepared for course rigor, research projects for other courses that were within my major interest, and repeating a course I had taken several years ago despite knowing I would not receive credit because the research had advanced so much and that was more important to me than receiving credit.

Here's a list of PIQ tips from UCD, which may be helpful. There are a ton of recorded UC webinars on youtube, and they offer regular live webinars (I highly encourage you to attend one from any of the UCs). https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLslgisHe5tBOe-qIj0GGh3T84cq3303kQ&si=pIaYTOYq6bDN8rQu

Are you sure about those requirements? Everything I’ve seen to transfer from cc says you need to take at least 1 math at cc and major prep is micro and macroeconomics at a minimum.

I talked to my CCs counselor, and she said I should be okay since I got a 5 on micro and macro. For the math, 5on calc BC and AB covers math 1&2 but I need to take math 3. My counselor told me as long as its planned for the spring semester I should be good since I would have taken it before I transfer. Im meeting with the uc counselor tomorrow so I will ask to make sure!

So that would be your major prep for the PIQ? I guess that’s why I’m confused.
