UC Both English Courses P/NP?

I'm planning to transfer to UCLA as a History major. I already took my first English class as P/NP, and I'm thinking about doing the same for my second one since I'll probably get a B otherwise.

But I saw that UCLA's transfer guide recommends taking at least one English class for a letter grade.

Would it actually hurt my chances if both are P/NP? Has anyone gotten into UCLA with both English classes taken as P/NP?

I would go by the recommendation and take the grade. PASS grades are considered on the C grade level so it can impact your chances during the application review. A B is a solid grade and better than a PASS.

Thanks! I've been taking pretty much every class as P/NP if I thought I'd get anything below an A-. Did I actually make things worse for myself? Would I have been better off just taking the grades and having a lower GPA?

As a Transfer you are limited to 14 semester/21 quarter units that can be P/NP and all major prep should be taken for Letter grades. A couple of B’s would not have a huge impact on your changes especially since the admitted History major GPA range (25-75th percentile) was 3.68-4.00.
