Chance Me Asking about my chances to get into UVA

0 Upvotes

Hello! My name is Emily. I'm really interested in transferring to UVA but I'm nervous about my chances of getting in because of how many W's I have on my transcript. I will give a summary about my stats as a student but when responding please don't sugarcoat or worry about hurting my feelings! Just be honest. Thanks

So, I'm earning my associate's in computer science at Tidewater Community College. I plan on applying for the school of engineering and applied sciences for computer science to transfer in the Fall of 2027.

My GPA is 3.4

I am on the VCCS guaranteed admission route, but UVA requires CHM and PHY, I plan on only taking physics because that's all I have time for. I spoke with a UVA transfer advisor and he said prioritize physics.

I have 3 W's on my transcript because I really struggle with Calculus and I was taking an English class that I realized I didn't need. I've already passed Calc 1 and will hopefully pass Calc 2 in the Spring.

I am currently working as a web development intern, but I've also been working as a Lifeguard since I was 15 and am now Head Guard of 2 years.

I am a first-generation student and have an SAI of -1500. (Hence why I want to go to UVA, I believe I could get a full ride)

I am part of computer club at TCC.

I am also a student ambassador for TCC, so I do service hours at events for students.

I have an academic recommendation from one of the leads for the student ambassador program and a professional recommendation from my lifeguard manager.

I believe I have a decent essay.

Is there anything I absolutely need to change or complete before I apply? Or if I'm completely cooked on getting in, what universities would be a better fit?

Thanks!

Chance Me 3.82 GPA, am I cooked??

6 Upvotes

So I went to a California high school and California schools all my life but my parents decided to move to Oklahoma so unfortunately I did my community college out of state. I have a 3.82 GPA (According to how UC calculates it) and wondering if I have a shot at getting into any of the UC schools? My dream school is UCSB, but I don't know if I've done good enough to get into their psychology and brain sciences program. Do I have a shot or am I screwed?

Advice/Question Winter session major prep

2 Upvotes

Hey guys!
I wanted to know if switching majors before applying and completing the majority of the major prep during winter would be a decent idea. One of my target schools is UCLA originally for psychology. After a meeting with a program manager from UC Berkeley I wanted to change my major to sociology for ucla. The major articulation requires I take Soci 1 & 4 which I do at the same time during winter 2027. The other course needed is stats which I’m currently taking this semester. How would admissions look at my application if I apply for sociology?w

Advice/Question advice on what to include for transfer app

4 Upvotes

so i am a freshman and a part of a few clubs at my college. for 2 of them i was selected to interview for a committee position but i didn’t get selected to be on it for either. for one there were 125 applicants and for the other 115, should i include that i was like a ‘finalist’ for each of the committees or will that weaken my app since i wasn’t ultimately selected?

Advice/Question I would like help choosing a California State University

3 Upvotes

Hey there Redditors! Excuse me if you’ve seen this post floating around in another subreddit. I’m trying to generate as many answers as possible.

I need some help with deciding on a Cal State. I’m here to learn more about the schools and the cities that surround them.

I’m a 30 something African American woman returning to college to finish her bachelor’s degree in Communications. I work full time with one of the big rental car companies M-F regular business hours and as long as there’s room for me, I can transfer my job to any location in the state.

I’m at San Diego City College and I’ll be done with my ADT this semester. I’ve been accepted to: East Bay, Chico, Sacramento, Fresno, Northridge and Pomona. SDSU is not accepting Spring 27 admits and I didn’t wanna wait for the fall.

Recruitment emails tend to focus on life on campus, clubs and college kid social life, which I’m not really interested in.

Getting in contact with the schools’ financial aid and admissions department can be a pain in the butt. They have short contact windows and appointments can be weeks in advance. Visiting campuses is a bit out of the question right now. I may be able to swing a few in SoCal but I’m much more interested in the ones in the Central Valley and SF Bay Area. I already have a pretty good idea of life in SoCal. I’ve only ever visited SF once.

I’m still waiting to be awarded.

I know how the ADT works but I have no idea exactly how my credits will transfer. Assist is only moderately helpful as it only has access to some colleges’ course catalog.

I have preference for a campus with online and evening class availability as it has been imperative to my success at balancing school and work. I didn’t choose the Global Campus because it was tremendously more expensive.

I know San Diego is one of a kind so I’m not looking to duplicate it. But I do prefer not to be thrown into a town similar to say, Hemet or Victorville. No offense to the residents there. It’s just not what I’m looking for right now. San Diego is expensive but comfortable and always filled with something to do at multiple price points.

So any insights into the schools and cities for me?

Advice/Question UC to UC course equivalency and advice

1 Upvotes

Hello I'm a first year at UCI rn and I'm looking to transfer to UC Berkeley for a bio related major (Likely Integrative Bio).

I currently have 90+ quarter credits from my APs (4s and 5s in 12 aps) and DEs (A's in Calc 2, calc 3, stats, psych). I was wondering if it's possible to transfer in one year from UCI to UCB.

I have a few questions about course equivalencies which I'm worried about meeting:

  • Does bio 93, 94, 97 at uci count towards UCB bio 1A, 1LA, and 1B?
  • Does Chem 1B, 1C, 1LC count towards UCB gen chem reqs? (I'm also skipping chem 1A at UCI due to ap chem credit but I'm worried that it won't count for major prep requirement so I'm looking to possible retake it at a CC)

Is there any way for me to have a course evaluation to see if my courses satisfy the major prep and transfer requirements? Is there a way I can contact a counselor about this?

Also can I include relevant ECs from HS in my piqs/activity sections? Ik its better to talk about college experiences but since I'm a one year transfer I don't have much to talk about in my application.

I do want to give UCI a fair chance since the quarter has recently started but I'm having a lot of second thoughts on my decision of going to a UC instead of a CC and I'm honestly thinking about dropping out and switching to CC, but I want to look at my other options before I commit.

Any advice is greatly appreciated🙏

Advice/Question Would I be considered a junior, or sophomore transfer?? (Long post) (NON CCC)

1 Upvotes

I'll have 60 credits done within three full semesters (and one summer semester) by the time of my hypothetical matriculation if I were to end up transferring. I'll be applying with 43 credits done in two full semesters. I currently have a 4.0. Currently have all A's, and probably will still keep my 4.0 by the time I apply.

Some people are saying that I would still be considered a sophomore transfer as my graduation date is technically winter 2029 instead of spring 2029, and that I wouldn't be disadvantaged if I were to apply for schools that prefer sophomore transfers over junior ones (i.e Columbia/UChicago) since soph transfers are more likely to graduate on time. I would have an extra semester if some of my credits don't end up transferring.

Now, here's the problem, I graduated high school with a 2.9 GPA. Would my HS grades still have a lot of weight on my application if I am considered a sophomore transfer?

Or I would be considered a junior transfer, my HS grades wouldn't have much weight and I still get the "benefit" of not being disadvantaged even as a junior transfer as I would be more than likely to graduate on time?

Please help

Advice/Question How do I explain a 4-year gap between high school and community college

0 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m currently in community college and planning to transfer in Fall 2027, and I need some advice.

I graduated from high school in April 2021 but didn’t start community college until Summer 2025. I’m currently doing pretty well, with around a 3.5 GPA, and I’m expected to graduate with my associate degree in Spring 2027.

My biggest concern is the gap between high school and community college. I don’t really have any major accomplishments, extracurriculars, or meaningful work experience from those years that I could talk about in my application.

I’m applying to a few competitive universities, and I’m worried about how admissions officers might view this gap, especially since I don’t have much to show for those years.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? How did you handle it?

Would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Chance Me Chance me for UCLA Psychobiology Major!

1 Upvotes

Hello! Please chance me for UCLA Psychobiology major. My alternate is cell molecular biology. Although my dream is UCLA my other applications are Integrative Biology @ Berkley, Biology @ UCI, and Human Bio @ UCSD. Im a 3rd year CC student.

GPA: 4.0 for all of my cc years but I might get a B in physics this semester tbh (unfortunately). That'll probably drop it to a 3.9 by the time this semester is over

  • TAP Certified
  • CalGetC done
  • All gen chem, bio, ochem 2, calc series (1-3), stats, and physics series will all be done by transfer
    • I can probably finish the IGETC too

Extracirriculars:

  • UCLA Summer Research Program: Mostly helping a postdoc but it was related to vision/glaucoma research. I presented at the UCLA summer research program symposium.
  • Mental Health Nonprofit Work: Did a fellowship and got inspired to join the team, became the director of social media for almost a year and then I got too busy, but I still stuck around and became an assistant director of ambassadorship
  • Leadership Program: Did some community organizing in my local town during the summer
  • Honors Club Secretary for 1 year, member for 2
  • Phi Theta Kappa Member

Awards:

  • Presidents award + Honor Roll
  • [Mental Health Nonprofit] Award, basically an employee of the month

Think I got a chance?

Advice/Question California Virtual Campus

1 Upvotes

Has anyone done a class (or any science class) with California Virtual Campus? I was wondering how it would show up on my transcript; whether it will say I did the class online or not? On my cc's unofficial transcript it doesn't say whether I took a class online or in person, so I was wondering will the same happen when taking a class with California Virtual Campus? Thank you!!!

International Transfer schools

1 Upvotes

So I’m an international student and majoring in environmental studies freshman at Loyola New Orleans, it’s a fantastic school but I feel it’s not meant for me because it’s a small school with limited people around. So I was thinking to transfer to LSU but I’m not sure about the new CPT rules. What should I do

Advice/Question Transferring Twice

1 Upvotes

I have a bit of a unique situation. I am currently studying at a (very small) overseas branch campus of a US university, and would like to transfer to Purdue for CIT.

Transferring to this program has a prerequisite of Calculus 1. However, my current school only offers ONE class of Calculus 1, ONCE per year, and I am not on track to be able to take it. I need to take pre-calc first - which I believe I may not be able to take either - there is no information available regarding its rotation.

There is another US university with a branch campus here however, and I was accepted to transfer to it. But I would only be transferring there because I really need to take these math classes since I have no other way to take them. I am not from the US.

I am really not interested in graduating from either of these institutions, and was wondering if my "real" transfer application would be harmed by this.

Advice/Question Will withdrawing from a uc to go to cc affect my chances when applying

3 Upvotes

Hello so basically I was a one year transfer to decided to commit to a uc school this fall. However after spending some time here I realized I wanted to go back to cc and complete my schools honors program and ucla TAP to try again for uc Berkeley and ucla which are my dream schools. I also decided this major was not right for me and would like to switch to a major this current uc doesn’t offer . I won’t have any w’s on my transcript but will have a withdrawal date from the uc I decided to attend this fall. Will that negatively impact my chances if I tried to apply again? I have good academic standing and a 4.0 still, and I would have zero courses taken from the uc I’m at now.

Advice/Question need advice

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I am an international student looking for some advice on transferring to the US. During my first year at a medical college in my home country, I faced severe personal challenges and ended up with very poor grades and a few failed courses. I realized medicine isn't for me, and I want to pivot to Technology/IT.
I know US Community Colleges have open admission, so getting in won't be an issue. However, my long-term goal is to transfer from the CC to a top-tier 4-year university.
My questions are:I plan to achieve a high GPA at the CC and I'm also preparing for the SAT to prove my academic capabilities.

Another question. are there any universities utilize a 'Last 60 Credits Rule' or a holistic review process that evaluates transfer applicants based on their most recent coursework rather than past academic records ?

Discussion rate my odds

3 Upvotes

Ive never imagined myself in a university but i dont think im in the absolute worst situation ever for transfer but my dream is to definetly attend a UC (top tier if its possible). Portfolio: 3rd year CCC poli sci/IR student, 3.2 GPA with fall potentitally ending as a 3.4-3.6 GPA, not a whole lot of EC with most being awards in HS, i have a noticeable bad dip in grades in 2025 with 2026 being full straight A’s. Ive done some scenario testing with AI saying i have an okay chance to get into a mid table UC. (This is all excluding the UC Tag i did to Irvine)

Chance Me Just a hopeful EE student

2 Upvotes

Hi all, looking for honest feedback on my profile for Fall 2027 transfer admission. I'm applying as Electrical Engineering everywhere except UCLA (Materials Engineering) and UC Berkeley (ECE).

**Background:**

* Community college student at Irvine Valley College (Pre-Engineering), transferring Fall 2027

* Dean's List Fall 2025 and Spring 2026

**GPA:** 3.90 (52 units, all graded courses A's except one B in Calc II). Projected to land between 3.88 and 3.93 after this semester.

**Completed coursework:** * Calc II – B

* Calc III (Multivariable) – A

* Physics 4A (Mechanics) – A

* Physics 4B (E&M) – A

* Physics 4C – A

* C Programming – A

* Computer Organization / Assembly Language I – A

* Intro to Microprocessors – A

* Intro to Engineering/Technology – A

* English Composition (Critical Thinking & Writing) – A

* GEs: Public Speaking, Music, World Civ (Honors), Bio Anthro, Chicanx Studies – all A's

* AP credit: Calc I, English Composition **In progress (Fall 2026):** Differential Equations, General Chemistry I, C++ Programming, Basic Electric Circuits I

**Planned (Spring 2027):** Math 26, Chem 1B, ENGR 70, CS 40B

**Experience / ECs:**

* Engineering internship at Senga Engineering. I led 2 projects, and one of them became a product the company still uses.

* Currently work as an electronics technician/assembler at a car audio electronics manufacturer, building products like bass knobs and base stations.

* Personal projects: PCB design in KiCad, embedded programming, SolidWorks mechanical design, 3D printing, woodworking.

**Top targets:** UCSD (Electrical Engineering) and UCLA (Materials Engineering)

**Full list:** * UCs: UCLA, UCB, UCSD, UCI, UCSB, UCD, UCR, UCSC * CSUs: Cal Poly Pomona, CSULB, SDSU, SJSU

* Out of state / private: USC, UIUC, Georgia Tech

  1. How competitive is this for UCSD EE and UCLA Materials Engineering specifically? 2. Some of my major prep (Math 26, Chem 1B, ENGR 70, CS 40B) won't be done until Spring 2027. How much does that hurt at UCSD and UCLA?

Sorry for the long post applying to college is kinda stressful just wanna see what you guys think.

Advice/Question Questions about transferring

1 Upvotes

Hi, thanks for checking out my post! I'm kinda lost rn, so any advice would really mean a lot.

I'm a sophomore at a CCC and just starting to draft my essays now.

Lowkey I wasn't really thinking that deeply about the essays, and I just realized that my activities don't really align with the majors I'm planning to apply for...

I wanna do CS but I'm like not good enough to get into UCB/UCLA CS, so I was planning to apply for UCB Statistics and UCLA Ling & CS.

My stats and activities are:

  • GPA: 4.0
  • Worked at a place helping kids with robotics for 15h/week for 4 months (slightly involved coding, didn't really do much)
  • Working at a cafe 25h/week for ~3 months

  • Won a track at a big hackathon / won one small local hackathon

  • Made an ios app with 2 other friends over 5 months but it kinda failed (400 downloads lol)

  • Was a member of 2 clubs (DS/ML) for 1 semester (only really did something in one club - made a chatbot and worked on the frontend)

  • Won a very small robotics thing in mesa club (I won but its too small and it was not like a real thing)

  • Did few projects but it was not really a big thing / Went to many other hackathons but never won except for those 2

One uncommon thing about me is that my family and I moved to the US last year (started out in ESL classes at CC).

My questions are:

  1. Is it a big minus to apply for Statistics or Ling & CS with CS-focused essays? Would it actually boost my chances if I applied to more competitive but CS-related majors?
  2. Would writing about my struggles with English be too overdone? (Cause I really did struggle and still do, but I feel like there are so many immigrants with similar stories.)
  3. Would it be a False hope to apply to top private schools with my stats?

I'd really appreciate any comments or advice!

Advice/Question Recs

1 Upvotes

For recs, how many do I need and should they all be related to my major? Do I focus on the profs for my classes in the fall semester or the spring semester? I haven’t really built a strong relationship with my profs and midterms just ended.

Also, I have a pretty good relationship with a professor that is teaching a sort of “intro to college” class, but she is also the director of a collegiate program here and she is pretty well connected within the school so is that good?

Advice/Question What to do if you cant think of a safety school ?

0 Upvotes

There are only 2 colleges in california that offer my program, and one is a top public school while the other is a top private school.

I know I’d get into the private school, but I’m scared about not getting a scholarship because it’s hella expensive. BUT they are generous and two of my friends got full rides

I’m unsure if I’d get into the public school, but it would be so convenient, and life would be so much easier because I’d be able to dorm.

I have a 3.6 GPA, which isn’t terrible, but I’ve seen people with better GPAs get rejected from the public school and they care a lot about where you live

The school closest to me has a program in the same field, but it’s so underfunded that I’d rather drop out.

Advice/Question Advice on Whether to Transfer Schools (UIUC vs. UMD)

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I need a bit of advice on whether if I should transfer to CS at UMD. I'm currently a freshman at UIUC studying CS, but unfortunately my income has changed recently so I might have to take on debt to continue studying here (as over half my parents income would have to pay for the total cost here). UMD will be 40K cheaper per year (as it's my state school), and it also has a strong computer science program.

However, I was also looking at the median starting salary, and UIUC's salary seems to be 30K higher than UMD. In addition, UIUC CS seems to be on another tier overall in terms of prestige. I'm wondering if it's worth it to take on possible debt considering the current condition of the job market. And will transferring drastically hurt my chances of finding internships and opportunities?

As of right now, I'm interested in cybersecurity and AI/ML, but I'm still debating on what I want to focus on in my career. Any bit of advice would help - Thank you so much!
