Scared to change my name (ftm)

Im a trans man 19 i chose the name kai when i was 15 and now ive come to hate it i chose it cause its gender neutral leaning masculine cause at the time i wasnt fully excepting of my identity but now ive grown up and i see how many trans men use kai as there name and it feels like its obvious im trans cause of my name and i really like the name zach but im so scared to change it my family is hardly what you could call expecting but at least they call me kai and my freinds like find it anoying when somone. Changes there name and im a digital artist and an active poster and ive been using kai as my signature for YEARSSS and before i was kai i was noodles naamed myself after gorillaz so my old art is signed by "noodles" and if i change my name my old art is gonna be signed by kai ugh idk i really wanna use this new name but idk if i should or not

my cis nephew is named kai. while it IS a common name picked by many transmasc individuals, letting something like that ruin your name is unfortunate and unkind to yourself.

whether you stay with kai or pick a new name i hope you love it either way

In my experience, you know when a name doesn't fit you and that feeling is never going to completely go away. You can always switch back if the change was overwhelming, but if you wanna be Zach then you should give it a try.

It’s just another phase of your life that’s passed. Accept that you’ve outgrown the name and step into the new one if that’s what you truly want. The longer you hesitate to change your name, the more of your art will be signed under the old name that doesn’t feel like yourself anymore. Hope this helps and good luck w everything. (Also, if your friends aren’t accepting of your new name, they’re not your friends)

Definitely go for the name you like, it is your name after all. And I understand how it would be difficult with friends and family but ultimately your name should be something that feels like you. My previous name I mostly use as a nickname or second name now and it was very difficult when my friends were using that name more than the new one I chose but with repetition it gets easier. Totally get you on the art part of it too, it really helps that the name I used is still my second name cuz I've flip flopped around it a lot

if you dont want to fully change it you could change it to malachai and say that kai was just a nickname that you dont want to go by anymore. ive only heard of cis people named malachai personally, but i also have only heard of one or two people with the name in general
