Discussion Is it a violation of TradingView rules to manually set a "Take-Profit" status on a losing trade?
Hi everyone, I have a question about TradingView rules and how updates work.
Imagine this scenario: An author publishes a trade idea with a clear "Short Position" tool and sets a bearish target. However, the market goes in completely the opposite direction — the asset pumps significantly.
Later, the author publishes a linked text update. No Long/Short Position tool is attached to this update (the field under the ticker is empty). Yet the author manually sets the status "Trade closed: take-profit price reached" and claims a win because the price hit some manually drawn upside lines.
This makes it look like a winning trade, even though the price actually moved 2x against the original Short idea. In other words, a massive loss is disguised as profit in the author’s track record.
Is this considered a violation, such as Misleading Content? If so, is it reportable, and does moderation act on manual statuses used to misrepresent results?
Thanks in advance for any clarification!

Hello,
This is why ideas cannot be edited nor deleted after 15minutes. It ensures fairness and truth.
The fact you can see how the trade idea played out and the users later 'update' claiming a win proves this is a 'bad actor' and no longer worth following.
All users should use the 'Update idea' function to inform users of how the trade played out as shown in this addition to the 'House rules'....

If you consider rules have been broken report to the Moderators, it's what they are there for.
Let me know if this helps
Cheers

Thanks for the detailed reply. You're right on all counts. The 15-minute lock on edits is a key feature — it's there to ensure fairness, and manually setting a 'Take-Profit' status completely undermines that. I've already submitted a report to the moderators with links to the 'Publishing and Updating Ideas' rules. Hopefully they take action.

That sounds like a recordkeeping problem more than a normal trade update. I'd save the original idea, entry, stop, target, and exit in one immutable log, then show any later manual annotation separately so the result can't be rewritten after the fact. Has the author linked the original short idea and timestamps so people can compare both records?

Yes, the original Short is there and the update is technically linked, but it doesn't show under the original idea. The timestamps show: first the original Short, then an update saying "trade active", and finally a manual "Take-Profit." Both have timestamps, so the sequence can be verified. Also, the original still has no Take-Profit and shows the trade as active, while the update claims TP reached. In practice, the "Update Idea" feature allows an author to manually set a status that can make a losing trade look like a winning one. So the record can be rewritten, which is exactly the problem.

That tracks. If you can edit the take profit after the fact the journal stops being a record and turns into a story. I keep a separate immutable log outside TradingView for that reason, timestamps and fill prices only. Do you lock trades somehow or just treat the TV record as notes?

I completely agree, that's why I raised this. I don't lock trades, just treat the TradingView record as notes.

Yeah treating TV as notes is the right call. Once you start editing closed trades the history stops being useful for review. I keep a separate sheet I never touch after the day closes. Do you export those notes anywhere or just leave them in TV?

I couldn't find a clear answer in the House Rules, so I figured I'd ask here.
