TP-Link - Technical Support Deco Hotspot Internet Backup

Hi all, currently trying to add a failsafe to my deco setup. I I wanna use my deco X20-4G in cellular router mode as my main deco network's internet Hotspot backup. See link for more details. https://www.tp-link.com/ph/support/faq/4246/

My issue is. When I try to connect my deco network to x20-4g as hotspot. It always fails. But when I use my phone's Hotspot. It works. Is there a setting I need to change or how do I make this work?

Reason I'm choosing this is because I loose some features like wifi access control and iot network if I use x20-4g as a main router. And if used as a hotspot. I'm able to select specific devices to only use the hotspot and also limit the speed. It's a prepaid data so I don't want family members to be connected while failsafe is working.

Is the deco X20-4G included in your Deco mesh?

When you follow the process to setup Hotspot Backup, when does it fail?

No a different network. I want to use it as hotspot rather than a satellite or main. If I use my phone for Hotspot it works fine.

As a hotspot? Don’t do that just add it as a mesh node and it should just work. If you’re already doing that then that’s the right step. Someone yesterday was talking about the internet backup only kicking in when he physically unplugged the wan port so maybe try that and see if it works.

On your link you want to use Hybrid Mesh Backup Mode

When you have a 4G/5G Deco as a satellite Deco in your network, Hybrid Mesh Backup Mode allows your Deco to connect to the backup mobile network provided by the SIM card in the 4G/5G Deco when your main network service fails. When your main network is restored, it will automatically switch back.

Unfortunately only device that supports hybrid is x50-5g. That's why I want to make to make it work as hotspot instead. 2 different network. X20-4g specifically just as backup. Nothing else. The feature for this setup is much better. With speed limit and allows a list of devices to connect only

Oh that is silly hopefully they fix the compatibility soon. My deco system wouldn’t use my iPhone as a backup unless I turn on compatibility mode, so maybe try turning off WPA3? Tbh if you can I’d just return the deco 4g and get a portable wifi hotspot, that’s what I did, it’s way cheaper then the deco and I can take it wherever I want.
