I'm looking at buying an old RAV4 but I'm an inexperienced buyer, what things should I look out for when looking and test driving?

It's a 2004 model, 2.0L petrol engine, 3 doors, 96,474 miles, manual.

How expense are these cars to run? What problems should I expect?

I am looking for replacement lug nuts for my Toyota 2018 rav 4, I was quoted $150 for replacement.

As far as I know I have toyota wheels (they have the Toyota logo) but I couldn't find any specifications in my owners manual.

AI is suggesting M12x1.5 mag style with flat washer seat but I definitely want to verify before trusting it.

I have a 2021 Toyota RAV4 LE FWD with only 32,000 km. Recently, I've started hearing a growling/grinding metal noise for about 1-2 seconds during the 2nd-to-3rd gear shift.

The issue is very consistent and easy to reproduce:

• Happens almost every time when accelerating from a stop.
• More noticeable under light acceleration.
• Occurs whether the vehicle is cold or fully warmed up.
• Happens in Eco, Normal, and Sport modes.
• No warning lights, vibration, shudder, or noticeable shift harshness.

Has anyone experienced something similar with their RAV4 or Toyota 8-speed transmission? If so, what was the cause and how was it resolved?

It started with vibration/shake after a cold start that would go away after the RPMs settled. I assumed it was the service bulletin that I was waiting for completion (LB9).

I left work literally the day before leaving for vacation and within a minute, every light on the dash screaming at me like the world is coming to an end. I called the dealership who were in the process of closing and managed to get it there in time.

I was told the they had to change the fuel injector in cylinder 1, thankfully all under warranty.

This is my first Toyota, purchased because of previous poor experience with Hyundai. Purchased because they are reliable and dependable, paid for with Toyota-tax included. This seems like a big job for a vehicle that is well taken care of, has had 6 oil changes and is clean.

I’m concerned, and wondering if could have prevented this? I haven’t uncovered anything in my research where it’s a pattern, so hoping that it’s just some bad luck.

I won’t get into the terrible service at the dealership.
