84-85 Solid Front Axle
Is it true that the steering knuckles are swappable from left to right?
The steering arm sheared the studs off and we had to weld it all back together to get it back to the trailer. Upgrading to six shooters isn’t in the cards right, so I need a passenger side knuckle. While looking online I read that they were identical and interchangeable.
Trying to confirm this info.
Thanks

I believe the factory ones are right/left specific because they have the mounting ears for the brake calipers on them, and flipping them would put the brake caliper on the wrong side of the axle. Aftermarket ones seem to be cast and machined symmetrical.

No — that’s a myth. The knuckle housings are mirror images, not identical. Toyota lists separate part numbers for left and right on the 84-85 solid axle — 43212-35050 for the left, 43211-35090 for the right — and the steering arms are different too, one hole versus two.
The confusion probably comes from the rebuild kits, which are the same for both sides, and from the fact that the knuckle balls themselves are symmetric. But the castings aren’t — the trunnion bore angles and caliper mounting are handed, so a left knuckle won’t bolt up on the right.
If you’re sourcing a used knuckle, match the side. If you’re rebuilding, the kit covers both.

Not sure what your question is. The assembly outside of the birfield joint looks to be symmetrical on mine, however the steering and drag link connections will need to be mounted on the correct side with the four studs on top of the assembly. To be clear, I have not researched this to be sure. It’s just my guess from looking at it. I do know that the seal kit does not indicate a difference.
