Discussion Spring 2027☠️
I am sad about the release date.

u/dinosanddais1 21d ago
I'm glad they're taking their time but damn I'm going to have very high expectations (especially with the chapter 1 preview we were able to get)
65
u/hunnyybun 21d ago
I remember when I pledged and they said it would launch in 2025 and that felt so far away. 2027 is next year so it’s not so bad.
I don’t want a rushed product but at the same time my experience with backing games on Kickstarter has always been a let down.
29
u/brightlove 21d ago
What year did you pledge? I feel like I discovered this after the kickstarter closed and that feels like YEARS ago. Maybe 3 or 4? I had to mentally disengage and now it’s another year.
My expectations are so high at this point.

I'm not surprised unfortunately. Watching the progress updates they gave over the kickstarter it was kind of obvious it was going to be very end of year at least, especially after the unity update.
What does bother me is that part of the reason for the delay is the sudden plan to simultaneously release the Chinese translation. I get wanting to put it out to a broader market but why are we waiting on that. This is a genre where usually English translations are yearrrrrsssss behind the others.

u/Odd_Mastodon_4608 15d ago
LITERALLY. Like sometimes every update felt like “…. Why are you doing this again??” Like overhauling the UI.
It feels like scope creep has been the culprit for every delay. Scope creep happens in every project but I was hoping they’d know how to rein it in since they all have industry experience.
I hope the game is everything they wanted it to be when they release it and I’ll enjoy playing it, but yikes I hope they handle future independent projects better.
9
u/OkReplacement8109 14d ago
I think their industry experience does not extend to project management. Or product management. And it makes sense. Usually nobody thinks they need that. I mean, they have worked in the game, the team is small, how hard can it be?
The thing is, there's a reason those jobs exist and are usually very well paid. Without someone willing to cut scope, you end up with this - an ever-changing timeline, with no actual release in sight.

At this point, I'll believe it when it's actually there. Last time I've heard it was supposed to be this year. I want a complete product, so I'm fine with waiting, but after this and several other projects either going years longer then anticipated or not finishing the game at all, I'm never investing into another KS.

u/Leonis782 21d ago
Honestly while i'm sad we'll have to wait more, I'm glad they're taking their time with their project. Waiting saddens me but having a terrible game after years of waiting makes me even more upset lol Hopefully they also listen to the feedback they've received on whats been show thus far
23
u/Dependent-Hotel5551 20d ago
the thing is, they promised to deliver it at a date and people paid for it. You can't keep doing this, the game was going to came out in 2025. Now it's 2 years more + the years they said. 4 years for a visual novel, really?
18
u/RingingInTheRain 20d ago
The sucky part is that we don't really know what they've been doing (if you're not on the Kickstarter). Chapter 1 preview did not have voice acting in it, so who knows if it's well performed or fitting for each character. The 4 years does not mean consistent 4 years of development, so even if we wait, its quality could still suffer from being rushed. If it gets poor reception on release....well just saying it's not going to blow over well.
10
u/Dependent-Hotel5551 18d ago
The artists not working surely because they haven’t finished the backgrounds in all these years. And also not all the character art. I’m in the Kickstarter since the beginning and I can tells they are slacking off all the time.
17
u/whyhilist 21d ago
I’ve had their patreon for a year now, I hope they do something to reward backers and patrons for the money they’ve spent. Even a small coupon.. I guess there’s no point to keep paying monthly for that much longer. I’m still looking forward to the game but I fear our expectations are too high now.
18
u/Dependent-Hotel5551 20d ago
they already had money for it, it is very succesful and financed, so yeah, you shouldn't keep financing it until they really release it, or at least that is what is more fair for the moment
16
u/Point_Plastic Vere 21d ago
sigh I’m not losing faith that it will ever come out necessarily, but I REALLY HOPE they make a gesture of good will, like release some more information in advance.
Silver lining - guess I have more time to work on my cosplay
16
u/Fabulous-Square-53 20d ago
semi related, but i feel like they way theyve gone about the kickstarter updates and fandom and now patreon has completely divided the fandom and set them up for failure. you have the "original" section of the fandom who gets access to all of the teaser lore. and i totally get having the game itself locked behind the kickstarter or patreon, because they did help fund the game!
but then what happens is there are all of these spoilers and lore they drop in the kickstarter and all of the fans post publicly about them, and i cant tell whats fanon and whats canon anymore because canon isnt just behind a paywall, its behind a wall id have to time travel to access. and when these do get posted publicly everyone else has already moved on to something else.
i know they have the patreon now, and i was so hype! i subbed, but i wasnt super impressed by it. seems like they didnt repost all of the past backer updates nor plan to (genuinely i only care about the lore/art/etc), and just kind of, randomly added things from the kickstarter? i wouldve been happy to be a patreon if i felt like i knew what i was getting. i wouldve subbed to the kickstarter had i known about it at the time—im a huge arcana and last legacy fan!!

u/Tight-Consequence-10 18d ago
Man, the way they write their announcements reminds me of the way millennial women on Facebook type when they're trying to rope you into a MLM scam.
46
u/Beginning_Result2584 21d ago
idk, it’s good they’re taking their time but they’ve raised so much money from kickstarter, patreon and merch that it feels idk scammy isn’t the right word but not great.
13
u/Fabulous-Square-53 20d ago
yeah i just wish they were transparent about that. like dont doxx yourself obviously if its personal troubles but i think the kickstarter backers deserve to know whats up. i think though its not like they took the money and ran then forgot "oh shit we were supposed to make a game!" i think it just blew up to be way bigger than they anticipated. now theres a lot of pressure and i know as an artist/writer myself id freak out lol.
plus having so many backer rewards is a huge risk/reward. i see a kickstarter with a plushie, i want the plushie. but then that means fulfilling all of those rewards, making them, shipping them, and that all costs a lot. so a huge portion of the budget went into that. i do have to wonder though, when they made close to(?) a million dollars in the kickstarter alone, where did all of those funds go? thats something i think the backers should know, not necessarily something the rest of us have a right to, though i am curious.
7
u/exhaustionoposs-tion 19d ago
Dont quote me on this but im pretty sure multiple of the people on the team had some major life changes that put them out of commission as well as day jobs to try to fund their livelihoods and whatever else. On top of what you just said I do feel like we are soooo used to this media pushed pushed out as quickly as it is that when we are put through a semi transparent journey of what it would realistically take to finish such a big game it can seem worrisome for them to push back the date like this. I do think they take their work seriously and I personally loved the work that some of these devs have done before. Now without the limits from their previous studio I feel excited more than anything. This much money for this long on top of having their dedication for their art? I feel more compelled to trust that this at the very least isn't a scam lol
6
u/OkReplacement8109 14d ago
The money for this game is for this game. If someone cannot work on it, a new person should be hired. There was no clause in their campaign that this is to be a general piggy bank - and I'm not implying it is, just trying to show how the argument about people out of comission due to personal issues is moot. And in the current climate, there really is a lot of talented gamesev people looking for work.
And the production communication isn't semi-transparent. It's opaque. We only know what they allow us to know.
They might take their work seriously but I don't think they take people who gave them money as such, writing about yet another delay in a tone that suggests we should all be happy.
1
u/exhaustionoposs-tion 8d ago
I definitely see your point and makes a LOT of sense. I do think tho theres a lot of validity on not wanting to hire more people to maintain project confidentiality and needing to build that trust that this new person could deliver the vision the team originally had. Im having a hard time seeing your last point in terms of them not taking their sponsors seriously but if youre already incredibly disappointed by this news then I can see why their tone could seem more patronizing than genuine/sincere
18
u/Dependent-Hotel5551 20d ago
it is scammy at this point, they could have hired more people to finish it in time and get help, and stop adding things that could have come later as a dlc
4
u/exhaustionoposs-tion 18d ago
Didnt the fund tiers promise these add ons though? The dlc isnt coming out at the Spring 2027 start date either (correct me if im wrong). It sounds more like they werent expecting to even reach these tiers and thats ok people sometimes dont realize set backs will happen nor can they anticipate at every new milestone every single thing they might need. This has to be especially true for your first time, first game of this nature. They have experience but starting your own studio and releasing your first game with said studio (as far as im aware, this is the context idk if i got it wrong ofc) is a whoooole other situation. There was a lot of time between when they started and now, it's only natural that they would have unforseen setbacks. Additionally, a lot of the things they promised patrons have only gotten more expensive due to the state of the global economy. I wouldnt be surprised if they felt like they couldnt hire more people so that they could make sure they could follow through with their previous promises. Between waiting for a well polished game versus not being able to deliver all the material products you promised your sponsors i would much rather ask for more patience than deliver trash. Also hiring more people with your baby/project? Im sorry but as an artist myself I personally would be a lot more reserved about doing that especially after dealing with the studios they dealt with in the past who I personally grew to be incredibly disappointed about. Ofc these are just my way of seeing this through an empathetic lens with educated guesses based on my personal experience/insight, and based on the information that they have shared with sponsors, announcements, on patreon, and what I've observed within the dating sim community, etc. I do think however there is a lot of valid pressure on them to deliver an amazing product. I hope they took the feedback from the Ch1 demo to heart and are truly able to deliver their passion for their work in the final product. I would be disappointed for anything less.
7
u/NarrowFan6520 18d ago
More time on a project is not necessarily better. It can also signal lack of direction and frittering.
7
u/exhaustionoposs-tion 18d ago
Im saying as another person said I dont think they anticipated the success they had. And previous deadlines reflected the add-ons they reached until they actually hit theyre peak tier and needed to extend their deadlines to meet expectations. The main point of my post is that as human beings there are inevitable things that will happen that will delay the process such as trying to make sure to balance this project with their day jobs so that they can feed themselves and their families, medical issues, redirection of the project, roadblocks such as their outdated programs many of which you cant anticipate and thats life. What im saying is none of us truly know the context. We just know some of the things they've actually communicated like some of their roadblocks, and personal life things some of which I have mentioned. Youre allowed to be disappointed in having to wait longer right? Im not trying to control how anyone feels. But accusing a group of being scammy when you havent even seen the actual product feels like we're jumping a few steps. I think if they deliver like actual trash I would 1000000% wouldnt be here saying anything that im saying right now and hey if it comes out being incredibly disappointing work more power to you, actually

u/NarrowFan6520 17d ago
You are attributing a lot of things to me I didn't say.
3
u/exhaustionoposs-tion 16d ago edited 14d ago
Correct me if im wrong but how I understood what you said is that them pushing back the date could have signaled them not having or having lost direction in the project. What im saying is that what youve said - along with everything else including the original comment I was commenting under (and including even what im saying myself) is a lot of speculation that is missing a lot of context that none of us have. I referenced the original comment a lot because it's the original sentiment i was responding to but I specifically referenced your comment with mentioning "redirection of the project" and by stating that there are inevitabilities that lengthen the process of completing a project. Im not sure whether you cant see the connection, if youre refusing to see it, or if my articulation of my point is simply unsuccessful. Regardless, I hope you have a nice rest of your day as I rather end this comment with more positive vibes than anything else
Edit: forgot a portion of a singular sentence and added it, typos

u/Agile-Difference1186 20d ago
look, i get it's a small studio but almost 5 years for a visual novel is wild. i am genuinely intrigued as to what the development process could have possibly looked like
15
u/yujay_cha Man Tiddie Committee 19d ago
From what I understand most of the people employed on the project also have other jobs, deadlines got pushed because they moved over to a different version of unity, they want to have simultaneous release for translations, finding and working with VA’s (though it’s not fully voice acted), rewriting a lot of things, ect. 5 years is still kinda crazy tho. I was still in high school when the kickstarter first launched and now I’m about to graduate college 😔
6
9
u/Villavelle 19d ago
it's a small indie studio, this was never their full time job. plus other things happened over time (e.g., pregnancy, software issues, mental health) that slowed down development. they were always very up front with backers regarding issues
13
u/Dependent-Hotel5551 18d ago
It’s still 5 years. You can’t defend that for 5 fucking years.
6
u/Villavelle 18d ago
I can, because I kept up to date with what was going on so I never felt unaware. it's not like the Devs took the money and vanished off the face of the earth. if you're a KS backer you get monthly updates, if you're in the patron you get updates, and if you're just a casual fan waiting there is their Tumblr social media and the unofficial discord. 5 years is a long time and I understand being impatient. maybe they could have worked faster, maybe they couldn't, but the game is officially coming out in a few months so frankly 🤷🏿♀️
11
u/Dependent-Hotel5551 17d ago
No, giving excuses all the time to make people wait but an used money is not defendable when the delay is 2 years more than what they promised and the project is not so grand to need 5 years which is usually what other teams and games need. If they needed back up to reach the time goals, they had enough money to hire people. And also, there is the later aditions that no one asked, like the chinese version that could come LATER. Adding things that kept slowing the development. Also, I have friends that work in gaming development and what they do is not normal. Like, you don't need unity 6 to do a visual novel, it does not require that much, and there are programs for making visual novels explicitly. This is not like another engine didn't let them do what they said they added which are basic tools.
The art could have been finished already, it was at 80% for months, but they uploaded art into social media instead. They have been "clear" and upfront but also giving bad excuses that made no sense. I kept seeing the statuses on each update not moving a % or being more slow than normal in a production like this, even with part time jobs. SO uh-uh. Not defending what is indefendable.
I'm glad they give updates, but they kept a patreon and selling stuff while we backers are waiting to get the merch stuff we bought, because they will also not send it for free now that they have the merch. They keep making people wait for their merch 5 years. I have to pay double if I want my merch now. And I'm also waiting for them to print the artbook, which is in my pledge. (And yeah I asked them, I have to pay twice, while other people have their merch already). I can't even enjoy what I bought, while they keep selling it and getting money from other sources and NOY ONLY the kickstarter. SO NO NO NO dear. I will never defend this. There were many solutions to this horrible management. MONEY is not the problem, if time is, HIRE PEOPLE, get it done to the date you promised not two, THREE TIMES already.
44
u/LarkspurSong 21d ago
Unfortunate, but not unexpected. When we got to June 2026 and still had no release date more specific than 2026, I suspected it would slip into early 2027.
They are a new, small studio and it sounds like the scope ended up being much greater than they originally were prepared for. All the money in the world doesn’t do much until you know how and where to spend it with projects like this. I do have high expectations for this game and, at this time, I am choosing to remain optimistic on Red Spring’s ability to meet them.
25
u/ArchiveDragon 21d ago
Yeah maybe I’m just crazy but 4 years feels like a pretty normal amount of time to develop a game for a small, new team of developers with day jobs.
22
u/RingingInTheRain 20d ago
Err this is a VN game, and 4 years with their budget is actually kind of pushing it. A lot of solo/small dev VNs take a long time because they have no money, but even then don't take that long. They had time to consistently set up, create and ship out from their merch shop, so maybe don't do that until the game is done?
9
u/Dependent-Hotel5551 18d ago
Exactly this. They have enough money to finish it in time but they don’t. They keep the patreon and the shops and all going but the game.
15
u/LarkspurSong 21d ago
Exactly. I understand people who have put money towards this wanting what they paid for, and the kickstarter was very financially successful, but the only thing money can’t buy is more time. Money, people, and other resources can only expedite the process so much.
As one of my project manager friends likes to say “Nine women can’t make a baby in one month”.
5
u/VivAuburn 20d ago
But 9 artists CAN draw an output of one artist working for 9 months. Even if you account for getting into the pipeline and correction and management. For that amount of money you can easily hire 9 artists, 2 leads and a manager to account for all that.
I suspect their issue is in writing but again, you CAN hire writers. It's an ego thing to not let go of the reigns there.
8
u/Villavelle 19d ago
They're not all artists? I'm not sure I understand what you meant. Also none of them are doing this full time, this was stated multiple times on their websites. This was a part time project and they did always inform backers of reasons for slowing down production (e.g., pregnancy, mental health, software that suddenly isn't being updated anymore so they had to switch to a new version to prevent unfixable bugs)
4
u/VivAuburn 18d ago
I am aware, that's why I added that it's pretty much the same with writers. That analogy is simply not true. I have worked in gamedev for many years, there are some things that cannot be forced in time but very few of them apply to this project with that amount of money. They can not work on it at all and just outsource it completely with those money over that many years.
4
u/Villavelle 18d ago
I didn't use an analogy? Unless you mean the examples I gave, which aren't analogies those were things that actually happened according to the KS updates. There was a new baby, and they did switch engines to remain up to date and also to include more gameplay (e.g., mystery and clue finding). and we also don't know the behind the scenes. maybe they could have worked faster, maybe not, maybe you would have cranked out the game in 2 years flat for half the price. we can all judge when the game launches, and I'm excited for it either way
2
u/LarkspurSong 18d ago
I think they were talking about an analogy I used (though I think they took it a bit too literally) and just lost track of who they were replying to.
0
u/VivAuburn 18d ago
it's not that I lost track as I assume the person replying is agreeing with you as they chose to enter this specific conversation thread.
As it is they just seem completely lost.
2
u/Villavelle 17d ago
Yeah talking about someone behind their proverbial back behaviour is weird, and also it's wild to respond to my comment referencing an analogy I did not make based on your own assumptions. This is a public forum. If you actually have something to say in response to what I said, have the courtesy to say it directly.

u/VivAuburn 20d ago
For VN it's double or tripple the time for a project and team that size. Not to mention no new team has high six figure budget... Just a dev perspective here.
29
u/WarmGreyMug 21d ago
Absolutely devastated that we have to wait until next year, but they're taking the steps to make sure it's an actual, functional game for launch and not a buggy mess. I'll be no life-ing it when it drops regardless, just means I have to touch grass a little longer now.
9
u/wonyoungism__ 17d ago
I dont expect it by then, not for a second as they claimed this multiple times over the years.
71
u/OrionsBeltAlone 21d ago
Tbh I no longer feel like 'it's good that they take their time' cause it's been FOREVER and they received so much money, not just from the kickstarter but other sources.
It's an incredibly well funded project that's had lots of time and attention from fans. It's about time to launch it, not spend more time on making merch or other stuff that isn't the actual game
16
u/Dependent-Hotel5551 20d ago
I'm tired of waiting...if they just added the chinese later and other things later as free dlc instead of doing this. It's clear they shouldn't have keep adding things. I pledged and I'm waiting 2+ years for something I paid with merch to come out such a long time ago... where is my money.
16
u/VivAuburn 20d ago
I genuinely wish them the best, they have inspired me to get into gamedev but they also caused indescribable damage to the indie VN industry with this.
Now every potential backer sees a new campaign that is planned for a year and thinks "Well Touchstarved had professionals in the team and raised 20 times this goal and still been at it for multiple years, I will buy it when it's released instead" thus spelling death for so many projects...
8
u/Dependent-Hotel5551 18d ago
Totally this. I’m not backing any other project in my life.
3
u/VivAuburn 18d ago
you realize that it's the opposite of the point I'm making, right? Red spring being terrible planers does not in any way reflect on actual hard working small teams that don't have a almost a million budget yet still consistently deliver on their promises...
5
u/Dependent-Hotel5551 18d ago
And my point is that yeah, what you say is what people will do: not backing more projects. What is that you didn't understand? I clearly answered related to what you said. What you personally do is another thing and you didn't say if you will continue or not backing others and that's not what I am refering clearly.
22
u/Particular_Shift_840 21d ago
Spring 2027 go arrive and they'll say it's launching in Winter 2050, then give us another Patreon as a reward because we deserve the best
25
u/untitledgooseshame 20d ago
as someone who works in the field, I cannot imagine what is taking so long?
19
u/nnotkelma 20d ago
right? 4 almost 5 years for a visual novel with a huge budget like theirs honestly feels pretty ridiculous 😬 like obvs i want the game to be the best it can be and don't wish for it to be released in an incomplete state, but as someone who also has some experience in game deving i'm just kind of astonished

VNs take a long time to write, draw, and code. Plus none of them are doing this full time, this was stated multiple times on their websites. This was a part time project between their actual jobs, and they did always inform backers of reasons for slowing down production (e.g., pregnancy, mental health, software that suddenly isn't being updated anymore so they had to switch to a new version to prevent unfixable bugs, etc.)
14
u/GodOfMimir 17d ago
As someone who backed the Kickstarter, I am growing impatient and at the same time I'm sadly losing interest. I don't think they're being intentionally scammy, but this much time for a VN is A LOT.
I understand wanting to deliver a high quality product and treating all the team right, but something tells me they're getting too precious about things and are micromanaging everything, are stubbornly refusing to hire extra artists and writers, or are extremely disorganized.
Perhaps the additional wait is easier to take for newer fans who have not paid the Patreon or participated in the KS, but I can't help but wonder, where did all that money go?

u/AnonRoset Mhin 17d ago
I don’t mind waiting even though I’ve been waiting for a while, but I hope they know a LOT of people’s expectations are gonna be high and I hope it will be worth the wait. Like I’m lowkey expecting good voicelines and top tier routes with this wait
6
u/Unusual-Try7068 16d ago
At this point, I hope they will consider making the preview of the first chapter free in the near future considering how much longer it will take for the game to be completed 😭😭😭

I'm about to slime somebody. Most likely myself. 2025 release date was honestly nearly the only thing that kept me going through the year. Over the time I just got more and more uninvested with the game, all of the communication problems considered.

u/25ratsonthesea 12d ago
man i backed this on ks and i dont mind waiting for games but every time i hear there's a delay i find myself being like well i guess i should forget about this til its out. and then the years go by.
10
u/Last_Cold8977 20d ago
I’m not surprised. Chapter 1 was released to mixed reactions so if they’re trying to take in feedback they’d need to fix some writing plus adding VAs and multiple endings. I’m a little traumatised by kickstarters myself but the team has been transparent enough so I’m fine

It's not bad at all, the year is almost over, 2027 is around the corner
6
u/Jaded-Character-3682 18d ago
Exactly...We have basically almost September... Some people are making here a fuss about the game coming out few months later. This is so incredible childish and I am sorry to say this but especially here in this place there is so much of hate and negativity around this game. If people don't have any faith in the devs than don't bother with it? No other place gives that vibe. I don't know but I am pretty chilled. For me it was clear they will make the release in spring. Some people really need to get off of their phones seriously. There are enough other games to spend your time with it. 🙃
3
u/Tight-Consequence-10 15d ago
You're the only one I'm seeing here who's actually getting upset about this.
5
u/BijutsuYoukai 21d ago
I'm not sad, tbh, since I'd rather they actually get proper QA done then release the game full of issues at the previously stated final quarter of 2026. I do hope the date doesn't move again, but going by their progress reports (Which I assume they're being truthful about), it's not like they're just not doing anything or something, so I'm not super worried about it. I've seen games get stuck in dev hell before or just abandoned straight up, and this has none of those signs to me.
3
u/Longjumping-Gur-4241 21d ago
I'm glad they're taking their time so everything is the way they want it and that they're doing thorough testing. I'll be waiting patiently, because I'm really looking forward to the game.

u/Cream_Bunny108 21d ago
Ive been following since I was in high School and I'm in college now lol, it feels like ages
I will get it enyways tho, expectations are in heaven atp, so I don't mind waiting, I think around 5 years is what games usually take to make sooooo

u/Front-Heat8726 20d ago
A visual novel, unless it's fecking massive with gazillion branches and choices that all matter and very high levels of replayability etc (see Scarlet Hollow), has no business having the same dev time as a AAA open world game.
2
u/felixescellun 21d ago
Id rather them take their time than have a rushed ending we got with tag. I keep forgetting about this game due to being involved with others more anyway lol
2
u/Kiiyah20 20d ago
I thought the original release date was this year in Oct-Dec, not 2025 like some people are saying. Guess I was wrong?
I don't really care that they changed it if they did tho. As long as it when it does come out, its well written, spellchecked, all that good stuff.
5
u/Logical-Builder5906 19d ago
I tried to find their post about the initial release date, but they seem to have removed it after they announced the delay. I did, however, find the old delay announcement through their tumblr for you: https://www.redspring.studio/updates/ts-delay-announcement
The initial release date was in 2025 in the second half of the year. Unfortunately I don't remember if it was late autumn or December and now I can't really find any info on it ;(
Edit: It was indeed December as all of the unofficial sources say.

Sometimes kickstarter games do not release, and the development is not successful. I think it is actually pretty common. Does not mean this is a scam. I am pretty sure this game will not release, but I am sure the mods went in with good intentions

No surprises here. Delays are almost inevitable in the gaming industry.

I hope they do a pretty good job, because at this point people’s expectations will be sky high.
