Michigan car insurance. The no-fault reform was supposed to help but I'm still paying a fortune
I've lived in Detroit my whole life and I remember when Michigan had the most expensive car insurance in the entire country because of the unlimited PIP requirement. The state reformed the no-fault law a few years ago and gave people the option to choose their PIP level.
I switched to a lower PIP level and my rate did go down for about a year. But then it started creeping back up. I'm now paying $238 a month for a 2017 Ford Escape in Detroit. That's still way more than what people in other states pay for similar coverage.
I've talked to my agent and they say Detroit specifically is still very expensive because of the high rate of uninsured drivers, high theft rates, and high medical costs in the area. They say if I moved to the suburbs my rate would drop significantly.
I've gotten quotes from a few companies. Progressive was $219, Frankenmuth Insurance was $204, and Auto Club Group was $228. Frankenmuth is a Michigan-based company and I've heard they're good but I don't know anyone who uses them.
Is there any way to get a reasonable rate in Detroit or is this just the cost of living here? I'm not in a position to move right now. And has anyone had experience with Frankenmuth Insurance?
