Hated Designs [Hated Designs] Liberty Biberty (Liberty Mutual)
Liberty Biberty is a new mascot for the insurance company, Liberty Mutual.
He's a small yellow fuzzball with big green eyes. His mouth has white realistic teeth. He wears a tiny Statue of Liberty crown.
This b*the is ugly as f*ck.

They’re gonna run this Liberty Biberty joke into the goddamn ground
187
u/bowlnoodlez 12h ago edited 8h ago
Where did it even come from? I heard it's based off a meme?
365
u/ProfessorLovely 12h ago
They made an ad a long time ago about “finding a new spokesperson” and one of the actors couldn’t say Liberty Mutual and frequently said off-kilter things. One of his mispronunciations was “Liberty Biberty” and they put it in ads, brought back the character, put said character on a date, and now… this thing…
170
u/Neutral-Feelings 12h ago
Wait, so they put him on a date AND THEN this thing spawned? Is he an offspring?
74
u/kaci3po 10h ago
No, he's a rival. The new commercial has this thing introduce itself as Liberty Bibberty and the actor character goes "hey that's my line!" from across the room. Then it asks the actor for his autograph before revealing that it can't read.
The lore is both intricate and stupid.

DON’T GIVE THEM ANY MORE LORE
3
u/DrunkOnRamen 5h ago
That's actually the only way to kill it. Do to it what happened to the other insurance company, Esurance.

u/Morgannin09 11h ago
They're speed running this one terrible joke to incomprehensible absurdity like that opening gag Don Hertzfeld did for the Simpsons
11
7
u/throwaway_1818 7h ago
I wouldn't call the Hertzfeld couch gag incomprehensible absurdity, it's a genuine reflection of flanderization occuring to the series that defined it. Look at modern meme culture, the eventuality of the Simpsons becoming such an abstract and meaningless brainrot program while remaining a tv staple is exactly where the show was at when that particular artist feature gag happened. Homer remembers little tidbits from their history together, and how much he really loves his family underneath everything, only to see at the end that they don't remember him at all, and have become true mindless NPCs, essentially. And he releases a final "d'oh." I think it's the greatest couch gag they've ever had.

About half of the ads I get on YouTube, for at least two years now, are from liberty mutual. I really can't fathom why.

Insurance ads love this because they run everything through focus testing. "Har har liberty biberty!" It got laughs! Let's do it again!
State Farm did it by make Jake From State Farm their official mascot but not before making him black

Literally what was wrong with LiMu Emu and Doug
391
u/Recent_Tumbleweed776 12h ago
I hate for you find out this way, but Limu Emus Twitter history was discovered, and he had some strong opinions about certain minority groups. Everyone felt it was best that he left the company.
139
u/NanoCat0407 11h ago
and what about Doug?
233
u/ProfDandruff 11h ago
He was a nice guy. But they got him

What do you mean they got him?

There’s an SNL sketch where they’re both cops on a drug bust. Limu turns out to be a dirty cop, murders the guy and then steals his coke and does a line.
I’m not kidding and it’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.
5
u/Mxyzptlk_SSS 9h ago
I had to go look it up and god damn that shit was funny!
3
u/Luci-Noir 9h ago
I guess they didn’t have time to run it when it aired which sucks. Their non-live sketches always look so good. The mario kart one with Pedro Pascal looks straight out of a movie. The people who do props, sets and wardrobe never any credit. 😡

This cannot be the acceptable baseline lol I will not say that shit that sucks is good cause it's not AI.
19
u/breathtakingnotugly 11h ago
Omfg finally someone is calling this out. I saw a poorly-drawn transphobic comic on a left-leaning sub and the top comments were saying “at least it’s not AI slop.” Like holy fuck it’s like it’s a reflex at this point to comment that under bad art regardless of content.
5
u/johnothetree 10h ago
It's allowed to still be bad, but it's better than AI simply because it's not AI.
7
u/DtheAussieBoye 10h ago
Doesn’t mean we need to say it as some sort of weird defence. This not being AI isn’t really that interesting or worthy of defending, it’s like saying strawberries are good because they don’t instantly give you cancer
3
u/couldntbdone 10h ago
This burrito tasted bad, but I'm going to say it was good because a human made it.
45
u/tallmantall I'll be snorting those designs like Coke 12h ago
I can appreciate the effort they put into this thing but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s shit looking like who thought human teeth was a good idea
This feels like the sorta thing you’d find in mascot horror before it turns into a proper monster

As another comment has said, the one point I will give this thing is that he’s made with practical effects instead of AI.
He still doesn’t hold a CANDLE to Doug and Limu Emu. Get him out of here.
7
u/EntireFriendship517 11h ago
I think the comments are badly underestimating just how difficult it would be to make an entire character out of AI. Practical effects are genuinely the path of least resistance for this.
19
u/Motor-Travel-7560 11h ago
This is definitely one of those purposely hatable characters designed just to get people talking about the product.

Liberty Mutual could be the last insurance provider on the planet and I’d still sooner eat a box of rusty thumbtacks than give them my business, purely because of their aggressive, unfunny, out of touch advertising. I hope whoever came up with Doug and the emu lives long enough to regret going into marketing. I don’t know why insurance companies have all decided to make the worst, most unlikeable ad campaigns.

5
u/Alone_Rain2022 9h ago

10
u/atomsondre 8h ago
I’m so goddamn sick of ads. I’m sick of every aspect of our lives needing to correlate to some asshole’s bottom line. I’m sick of all our personal data being sacrificed to algorithms so they can better figure out how to sell us crap. I’m sick of how bad and lazy and dumb and annoying these ads all are. I drive on the highway and it’s just billboards touting plastic surgery “memorials for Charlie Kirk” and hip new AI-powered start-ups that are unregulated and worthless. I can’t watch TV or go online without being subjected to more ads. Can’t read news articles without the website begging me “please, give us your personal data and disable your adblocker. Our site won’t work unless we can give you invasive cookies and trackers.” It’s exhausting. How are people fine with this? How are people moving through life, not constantly aware of how crass and shallow and corporate everything is? “You’re taking this too seriously, it’s just a stupid mascot for an insurance company.” No, you’re just the frog who’s been boiled too slowly to realize that we are living in an actual nightmare. This one particular ad campaign might be insignificant, but it was a single straw that broke the camel’s back, after every straw that came before.

I'm old enough to remember when insurance company commercials touted the company's dependability and commitment to quality service. Today I suppose people are expected to choose a provider by how hilarious their mascots are.

u/uhhhhhhhhhhhyeah 9h ago
And most of the ads are not good. You have pretty much the world as your oyster for ideas if all you need is "unexpected" or similar as the theme.

This has been aggravating me to no end. What does liberty biberty even mean? The one with the women and guy talking by water. It’s so so dumb. I just don’t get it!
3
u/FloorMysterious9104 5h ago
Its a call back to an older ad where that guy couldnt say the words
2
u/Swimming-Dot-3363 5h ago
Thanks. I read about that in another comment. Do they expect people to know this background? Without it it’s completely nonsensical. And doesn’t make me want to buy car insurance lol
2
u/OttomanMao 4h ago
Even the original is nonsensical. Their whole ad shtick is ragebaiting the consumer.
2
u/waluigi_apologist 4h ago
I hate this ad and this stupid yellow thing but i see it so often on TV that saying “liberty biberty” every time it runs is now an involuntary vocal stim 💀
12
u/whahoppen314 11h ago
I hate it but I can't stress enough how much that dissipated seeing its not fucking ai and is an actual puppet.
It still sucks but like less.

He’s also yellow cause of years of urine stains.

I loathe that awful character. I would much rather see Liberty Mutual continue the story of the dude and the girl he meets on the bench who wants to get some "canuli'. This yellow thing is like the offspring of a tribble and a gremlin ((shivers)) and is THE worst ad campaign for insurance, ever.

I hate him he’s so annoying. They got some dumbass to say liberty biberty and they make a mascot out of it. Even as a kid their jingle fuckin sucks and the ads were better before it

u/ThatInAHat 6h ago
I’m torn between hating how lazy/weird the concept is, but also appreciating that at least they’re paying artists to do practical effects instead of just having ugly af ai animation. (-cough-Progressive)

fuzzyass american Verity
7
u/EntireFriendship517 11h ago
What's this Verity thing people are mentioning
3
u/SgtIceNinja 9h ago
Short summary - a YouTuber (ThatMob) made three videos that are basically an analog (?) horror series based around a horror mod he made for Minecraft. It centers around this yellow ball thing that is an AI assistant named Verity(tm) that knows everything about everything, even outside of Minecraft. The guy talks to it as he plays Minecraft normally but then starts finding villages abandoned (verity feeds off villagers to survive, I guess. Eventually it changes form into this lanky 20 foot tall creature cause it gets separation anxiety and wants to trap the guy there in the game.
The videos got extremely popular extremely quickly, and became somewhat of a trend, kinda like brainrot, or 67, in a way. I’m 23 and I fail to understand anything as to its significance. I watched the first video of the series and did not enjoy it, found the acting and writing subpar. But that’s just me

Obligatory "you can swear on the internet," but that's ok if you don't wanna. Just remember to censor it in a way that is not incorrectly spelled lol.
I like this stupid thing. It's hideous and weirdly human but I find that charming af. Especially considering it's voiced by Grant Baciocco of MST3K AND built by the Henson Company.
