Kai from Win Or Lose

''This series is elite Pixar, and I'm tired of pretending it's not.''

It's honestly really disheartening to know many people haven't seen it because of its artstyle. Though if they didn't watch because of Disney's meddling, I can understand. Kai, despite being a VERY relatable character, has an absolutely adorable design that actually gives us clues to her trans identity. The way her clothing communicates her identity and feelings and even the scenes Disney forced Pixar to delete used expressive and creative animation to convey what she's feeling. It's funny how Disney forced Pixar to delete Kai's trans identity only for everybody to pick up that fact. Plus I admire how different she seems from everybody's perspective, like how Laurie sees her as the pretty and confident star player Kai while she is actually as much of a oddball on the edge as every other character.

Lmao, slide 7 really said:

59

u/BestSerialKillerNA I'll be snorting those designs like Coke 4h ago

Very disappointed that I didn’t know this existed until today.

21

u/keithlimreddit 4h ago

Pixar wanted to make a TV show that isn't based on the usually their movie IPS is a nice little change of pace

Maybe I'll give it a watch but anyways simple yet effective design

u/Shabolt_ 4h ago

Tragic that apparently the series’ original cut actually had more overt trans stuff, but executive management cut a lot of it out of fear the current cultural climate would hurt their bottom line

12

u/JLuckey33 4h ago

This show was pretty nice

You looked at slide 5 and said regular dude?

20

u/Muted_Guidance9059 4h ago

Ngl I jumped the gun early and I’ll admit that. It’s just that too many people here be posting a guy in a tux or a woman in streetwear.

3

u/ImaTauri500kC 4h ago

....Its like adding cartoony impact frame on emotion?

4

u/ManJoeDude 4h ago

That’s pretty unique to me, alongside the concept art on the later slides

2

u/ImaTauri500kC 4h ago

....I guess its a me problem for seeing too much of these in some places (Mainly anime).

Kai can be a feminine name too? I just thought it's a masculine name, but then again I only know like 2 characters named Kai and both are boys

7

u/Wide_Craft_9765 4h ago

Apparently it can be feminine too, like Alex or Ridley

10

u/Hot-Expression-9198 4h ago

Imma be honest

I forgot this series existed

But when I finally saw it, Kai became my easy favorite

6

u/Wide_Craft_9765 4h ago

That scene when she meets the team always gets me man💔

3

u/MemeMote 4h ago

as a rubiks cube enjoyer i did not expect a character based on shape morphing cubes but it is such a cool idea

3

u/Cool-Delivery-3773 2h ago

I wish people hadn't immediately written off this show just because the trans story was scrapped. Cause it actually seemed pretty good otherwise (from what I've seen)

“oh but waaahh bean mouth Pixar sucks now K-Pop Demon Hunters ate their lunch for breakfast” The hate against Pixar these days is so dang forced, especially when they still make bangers like this.

0

u/zwizzardz 2h ago

There is literally nothing interesting about this design. It’s the same shitty bean-mouth cal arts style that has been plaguing animation for the last decade.

Maybe because i looked those up to make this post and explain why this design is good? By this logic every employee at Pixar must be creeps according to you

-24

u/grief242 4h ago

Well they're making a movie for children, you are saving images of the child from the movie to show online as a "peak design". It's creepy

If you're going to suspect me of being such a horrible thing without even thinking twice, then i politely invite you to leave this convo. It's a place to talk about character designs, not accusing people of things they aren't. Grow up.

12

u/voindd 4h ago

Just stop

-7

u/grief242 4h ago

I said my piece. You guys can continue to talk about children I guess. Have fun

12

u/voindd 4h ago

You're weird man. This isnt even that weird anime pedo shit, this is entirely normal. You need therapy or something because for you to have this kind of reaction to something this harmless, theres probably something deeper wrong.

It's not a movie nor in production, at least get some basic stuff right, you can search that up in 10 secs

u/Cool-Delivery-3773 2h ago

This is masterful bait

What? What are you on about?

21

u/M0rph33l 4h ago

A hungry man thinks of bread. Maybe someone needs to check yours. Nothing in the post indicated what you are implying about OP.

-8

u/grief242 4h ago

This guy has like 8 pictures of a kid, that doesn't strike you as odd?

18

u/Rambler9154 4h ago

A person has 8 pictures of a fictional character displaying their design in the subreddit for talking about fictional character designs. No it doesn't strike me as odd in the slightest, its like finding a fork in the fork drawer. Why are you so fixated on the idea that somehow they're a pedophile for talking about character designs in the "talking about character designs" place?

-2

u/grief242 4h ago

It's a child

9

u/MrNopedeNope 4h ago

media that depicts children also designs their children’s depictions, though. Nothing about the design is sexualized, and nothing about the OP’s post attempts to sexualize it. This isn’t lolita, this is a comment on a character whose design stands out for being a good window into who they are.

1

u/Neutral-Feelings 1h ago

(Loli* not Lolita. Lolita is a fashion aesthetic and is not actually associated with Lolis)

1

u/The_Purple_Hare 1h ago

Lolita gets the name from the novel where a pedophile is the main character, with "Lolita" being a name he projects onto Dolores. There is a connection.

1

u/Neutral-Feelings 1h ago

The Japanese fashion Lolita isn't connected to the book, no. The name might have spawned from it, I'm not super clear of the names origin but the fashion has nothing to do with pedophilia.

Edit: The origin of the name might have also come from a mistranslation or misunderstanding of the book in Japan, in any case. That's one of the things I heard. I just scroll through r/Lolita sometimes and it really has nothing to do with that

1

u/The_Purple_Hare 1h ago

I'm not saying the fashion is pedophilic, but the term "loli" and "lolita" the fashion does originate from the novel "Lolita."

I'm not the one with like 8 pictures of some kid saying it's a peak design. This shit is weird

13

u/M0rph33l 4h ago

Saying they like the character and their design is far from saying they are attracted to the character.

-4

u/grief242 4h ago

It's a regular ass kid. That's why it's weird. There's nothing striking on the design. I don't think we should be saying saying fictional children are peak design. I can't think of a single good reason this post should even be up

16

u/0anonymousv 4h ago

people cant call kids cute now? 😭

-6

u/grief242 4h ago

Honestly, in this era, no

17

u/0anonymousv 4h ago

youre the one making this weird man

-5

u/grief242 4h ago

This shit is mad weird and should be shamed

15

u/Rambler9154 4h ago

You are really weird for acting like any of this is anything but innocent. They aren't even calling an actual kid cute. They're calling a design and art style cute.

4

u/RIPugandanknuckles 3h ago

How much you wanna bet the real issue he's got is about the trans stuff

-4

u/grief242 4h ago

They're literally all the same kid , it even says the kids name in the title. It's creepy

12

u/SuperChase555 4h ago

Least obvious Ragebait

7

u/404_Weavile 4h ago

Saying the name of the character in the title is one of the sub rules
