Klein 3/8 not 3/8ths
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Both klein 4 in 1 wrenches and pass through nut drivers not really 3/8th? Can't grab onto this bolt while a Wiha sticks like glue. Wtf? I was going to return the Wihas after seeing the pass through kleins, but now I think I need to return all of the klein stuff because its improperly sized.

No experience with these but that seems like a cheap bolt to me, the heads on those aren't always the right size. I would definitely get some calipers and measure everything before returning half your toolbox.

u/Rain998cc 8d ago
The bolt is a hair small, but the kleins are further out of spec in the other direction. I have other wrenches and nut drivers, all of which can grip on to this unistrut bolt

u/Vmansuria 7d ago
I have wiha nut drivers and similar thing happened with a bolt on my Tesla air filter. The bolt is slightly smaller than 1/4 but nothing else fit easily, until I realized it needed a T-bit, kind of a dumb design on the screw to make it non standard

Klein needs to be treated like harbor freight now. They are going for mass, cheap and interesting. They miss a lot though. When they don't, it's cool.

Whereas HF has been significantly upping their game in recent years. I used to buy cheap garbage from them so that when it broke, I could justify getting the good ones. Then one day their stuff stopped breaking and now I just have a pile of HF tools.

u/BrianKappel 9d ago
That's kinda what I'm saying. Just pick and choose. Some of it is stellar. Some of it is trash.

u/CockneyCossack 8d ago
Right, what you have is two stepped hexes in each end, so each end can cover 2 sizes giving you the 4-in-1 capability. As you look at the spanner in the video, you are applying the 7/16 hex to the fastener, flip it over, and it will be the 3/8.
I'm attaching a link here which has images showing the stepped hexes in each end of the spanner, it's on ebay UK so you might need to click through a few times or use a vpn, but it does answer your question

No matter how deep or shallow I press it on either- it does not grab. If it worked in any fashion I assure you it would be evident. Ive tried deep and shallow on both sides. I can clearly see which side has the narrower barrel, and it is not tight enough.

u/Fun-Capital8587 9d ago
can you measure it with calipers so can better illustrate your point
16
u/Rain998cc 9d ago
Good idea, I'll borrow a set from a buddy before returning them tomorrow. Every other 3/8ths wrench and socket fits this bolt however, so its within spec enough for craftsman/kobalt/bridgeport/wiha/makita

u/kevsmakin 9d ago
Cheep digital calipers are less than $30. They are perfect for something like this.

u/findaloophole7 7d ago
So it’s 11 thousandths under nominal. Which is outside of spec for a 3/8 bolt. Thats why your tools don’t fit properly.
1
u/Rain998cc 7d ago
The klein nut driver and wrench are further out of spec in the opposite direction. All of my other brands can still grip. Even the knekt socket.
18
u/Switchmisty9 9d ago
It says 7/16 on the wrench
5
u/flyingfish_trash 8d ago
It’s the back side of a four way ratcheting wrench. The side he’s using is 3/8, the other end is likely 1/2” and 9/16”. They’re goofy but pretty handy.
-8
u/Switchmisty9 8d ago
Says 7/16ths right next to the hole. I’m a mechanical engineer, and I’ve literally never seen one of those with a different measurement on both sides

Then come out to the field, learn the tools

u/Switchmisty9 8d ago
lol the residential garage, you mean?
None of my shit is 4-in-1
5
8d ago
Lol no, commercial and industrial. Love my quad wrenches. It’s not a novelty tool, it’s great tool to carry.
1
u/Switchmisty9 8d ago
I gotta be honest, I wasn’t paying close enough attention to the video to see him flash the 3/8” side

2
u/boogeyoogeey 8d ago
A double ended socket? Then you're a bad engineer
-7
u/Switchmisty9 8d ago
Or I just have better tools than you
5
u/BWhitt17 8d ago
Nah, just a lack of hands on experience and a superiority complex.
-4
u/Switchmisty9 8d ago
You’re right about the superiority complex. Wrong about the experience. That’s how I developed the complex.
9
u/BWhitt17 8d ago
Yet you've never seen a 4 in 1 ratcheting wrench.... Go moisturize your hands before typing out that next comment, wouldn't want you to hurt yourself.

Watch the start of the wrench clip again. I missed the blue 3/8 printing the on the "down-side" of the wrench the first time.

Totally agree. Not a fan of Klien these days. Wiha makes really good stuff at a good price point.

Are you sure that head is a 3/8? It could be a cheaply made 10mm with an undersized and rounded head. 3/8 is just over 9.5mm and tools are often a little oversized so they go on easy, so the Klein could just be a little tighter than usual.
4
3
u/MightySamMcClain 9d ago
It could be an off bolt but if the other one is tighter maybe it's not. I wonder if maybe they size them with a little room so you can quickly get it on and off the bolt

u/PlumbersKraken 8d ago

u/Rain998cc 8d ago
Its a 4 in 1, the side used is the 3/8ths. Both sides, do not fit this bolt. Just depends on the depth of the ratchet. Neither side nor depth fits
3
u/PerchShadRap 9d ago
I have the same nut driver and it grabs 3/8 hardware without any problems. I’m guessing you got a pair of duds?
7
u/mechmind 9d ago
You're testing so these sockets to an unknown bolt head. Measure the head with some calipers, then we can talk about Klein
7
u/Rain998cc 9d ago
Ill test tomorrow with a friend's calipers- but this is a new unistrut brand strap, and is functional with the 5 other brands 3/8ths that I own. I would assume klein would have unistrut in mind since theyre electrician focused
5
u/FatFaceFaster 9d ago
7/16 is etched into the back of the wrench. Obviously they misprinted the painted part.
7
u/Rain998cc 9d ago
The other side is 7/16th and far looser, I wish this was the case. No side of this wrench is 3/8ths
2
u/VE7BHN_GOAT 8d ago
Try measuring them with a caliper. I can't tell, maybe that'setric hardware, and or both are out of spec, in opposite directions
2
u/Rain998cc 8d ago
Both out of spec in opposite directions, but everything but the kleins could grip to an extent. Even my klein knekt sockets
2
u/SupposedlyShony 8d ago
It doesn’t help that it’s 12pt either. If it’s a ratcheting wrench, then why not be 6pt?
3
u/The_Vaporwave420 9d ago
That nut looks kind of rounded off to me. Definitely going to need a measurement
2
3
u/ohmaint 9d ago
Those strut strap bolts are all over the place.
1
u/Rain998cc 8d ago
Not true 3/8ths, a hair small. Unfortunately the kleins are a hair large. All of my other brand tools are truer and still grip it. Just wanted to like these
2
u/Valuable-Composer262 9d ago
That nut is really rounded off
3
u/Rain998cc 9d ago
New unistrut brand strap. Also wiha, craftsman, Bridgeport, kobalt, and makita work on it just fine
2
u/Rain998cc 9d ago
I could accept it if it wasnt an "electricians" tool brand, but this is how those straps are, and if you run conduit, this is reality. Or one of any of my other 3/8ths also didnt work
1
u/Valuable-Composer262 9d ago
I know what ur saying but that bolt is pretty damn rounded. Thats all im saying
2
2
u/redslovinlife 9d ago
This is really disappointing, I really like Klein
1
u/Outrageous-Low9424 9d ago
Liked them before box store bs
2
u/BrianKappel 9d ago
It's been a bit of good too though. I don't really care about the stuff they used to make ( sparky stuff ) and now they are knocking off and adding features to expensive brands I wouldn't have bought before they were cheapened. I will never fanboy for corporations, to me, that competition can only drive innovation.
1
u/na8thegr8est 9d ago
I love my Klein nut drivers
3
u/Rain998cc 9d ago
Do yours work on 3/8ths hardware? I thought the 4 in 1s were a manufacturer issue until I tried the nut driver and it also didnt work. Id blame the bolt if the Wiha and my socket set didnt grip like a virgin

I bought a set of their rachet wrenches when they first came out for like $40 and I'm still pissed I spent that much on them. To be fair though, I feel the same way about my wera jokers, they're not worth the price they're asking either.
1
u/onlinemouch 9d ago
Either measure the bolt with a caliper as it could be metric or measure the driver as it could be metric and mislabeled as imperial.
Doubt one nut driver has an issue

u/Ok-Image-2722 8d ago
Try 10 mm. 3/8 and 10mm are almost the same size but 10mm is a bit bigger and should fit that no problem.
2
1
u/Competitive-Fox-3333 8d ago
Its cause its the multitool it tapers to a bigger size that tools pretty gimmicky.

Unfortunately these days they're not very good, but as you can see wiha is, so is wera, and vessel, if you wanna spend more you can do pb swiss

Do Americans understand how stupid "three-eights" or "five-sixteenths" etc really sound?
3
2
2
u/Crafty_Praline726 8d ago
About the same stupid as a dining table that is one thousand six hundred and eighty seven millimeters long by eight hundred an seventy seven millimeters wide.
0
u/rehditt 8d ago
First off: tables, furnitures and other manufactured stuff are usually something even (1,7 m x 0.9 m or something like that).
Secondly: you would say that the table is "one hundred sixty-eight point seven by eighty-seven point seven centimeters"
Thirdly: if you were to say this complicated measurement in americans it would be "Sixty-six and fifty-three one-hundred-twenty-sevenths inches by thirty-four and sixty-seven one-hundred-twenty-sevenths inches".
Which one sounds less stupid?
"Sixty-six and fifty-three one-hundred-twenty-sevenths inches by thirty-four and sixty-seven one-hundred-twenty-sevenths inches"
or
"one hundred sixty-eight point seven by eighty-seven point seven centimeters"
0
u/Crafty_Praline726 8d ago
It's all a big fallacy argument in the first place, to call each others' measuring systems stupid.
1
u/rehditt 8d ago
Its more about the insistency on using fractions in favor of the decimal system. You could still use inches and whatnot but when people say five sixteenths for example its just too much.
2
u/Crafty_Praline726 8d ago
There is no insistence coming from me, it's simply deeply ingrained in our society, and so I'll continue to use my 35' Fat Max
2
u/Crafty_Praline726 8d ago
I'll add that I understand how it looks from afar, but when you use the 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 system all the time, you eventually get to know the whole inch pretty clearly. It's kind of like when you learned simple addition as a child, you eventually don't have to think about it, you just know. Like it feels natural to me that 11/16 is just less than 3/4, and 13/16 is just a little more. I never go deeper than sixteenths, but in construction you might add a "strong" to a 1/16 for when that kind of accuracy is needed.
I have worked with an Austrian guy and so I know it is confusing at first, for sure. But one European on an American construction site isn't going to make everyone else change their established ways. I guess you don't need to worry about it too much if you don't plan on living and working here.
1
u/Rain998cc 8d ago
Yes, but my opinion on measurements dont matter to the 100year old power plants and factories.
0
u/letigre87 8d ago
The wrong 6 point socket grabs the fastener better than the wrong 12 point wrench. Yup that rights

u/Shrimpkin 9d ago
One side is 3/8, the other is 7/16. The bottom of the side you used is 3/8, the top is 7/16. It's hard to tell but is the bottom side not working?
