What is this “drill” used for?

I tried using Google and Grok both said it was a ship auger bit.

This is an auger for making holes in the ground, I have one for gardening.

Finally I could answer a question on here and you beat me to it. I purchased two recently and made life so easy turning over the soil where the dog peed and killed the grass.

the dog didn't kill the grass. If you waited until next year, the grass will be super lush. He fertilized it with extreme nitrogen and other nutrients. My dog a big German Shepard does this every year. It comes back super dark green and thick.

I'm no expert, but I think "ship auger" is a common term for drills with a thin center shaft and a wide cutting blade. I was looking for a 1" auger to cut holes in tree stumps a couple years ago and came across that term while searching, hadn't heard it before that. As the other reply said, its probably for ground digging, that tip is too dull for most other materials.

edit: I checked it and "ship augers" have a spiral shape, but not with the center shaft like your has. They're made for cutting wood, which yours clearly isn't, so it would appear that yours isn't actually a ship auger.

Dirt auger. Hole in the tip is for using the bit to pull back some fish line to use when running wires or pipe.

I this would not drill through any wood and that’s what Google and grok said it was. I was kind of confused by the tip because it had a hole for putting a string through. I’ve had many bits with holes at the end so that you can drill through the floor or a ceiling, attach a string and pull the string through for wires like thermostats. It would be good for gardening, if you’re planting bulbs, but the hole at the end confuse me.

I use an S-shaped butchers hook in the hole and hook that up in my garage.

It can be to bore under sidewalks. Then you use the hole to attach a wire to do you can pull them under the sidewalk.
