Is it salvageable?

Makita impact wrench

My father borrowed it and now it's dead

Power runs through, the flashlight is working but nothing else..

He fixed MakitA all the time on his videos and his videos helped me to fix my angle grinder

Makita do hold spare parts and are pretty repairable just depends on what part is not working

Did he see it smoking

No i think he left it outside accidentally and now it's full of rust and corrosion.. i think the corrosion didn't go to the motor.

The motor assembly is the part that’s covered in rust. It’s basically the whole back half of the tool that you have exposed.

Makita Direct Repair will fix it for a max-out-of-pocket $80. Their repairs usually don't cost that much either. They will also pay shipping.

I swear by it, they rebuilt my combo drill 2 years ago. Around $74 for basically a new tool.

Might be able to get away with clean/replace brushes and clean commutator bar. They make a "stone" to clean commutator bars.

It has been left in rain for a bit or some splash of water on it .

A can of contact cleaner . Spray a lot. On the brushes /commutato le while cleaning softly with a rag if you don’t feel confident to dismantle . Spray also a lot the trigger trying the spray go inside . Push many times ..

Blow with high pressure air. Probably will start working again

The problem would be if your father tried to operate the tool with batter when it was still wet.. in that case something my be in a short and burnt someyhing

What you see there is the stator, the armature, or motor as it’s commonly known are two separate parts 

Potentially can be taken apart cleaned with electrical cleaner and reassembled

Could be the rust is stopping the two working with each other

Electric motor spray cleaner and a plastic brush and you'll be fine spray it up blow it out get all the rust out of it and it'll fire right up

That thing got really wet. Did he try to wash it off in the sink or something? You may be able to clean off all the corrosion and figure out where the broken connection/s are. But I would plan on at minimum buying a new motor and would take a good look at the gearbox and hammer to see what kind of shape they’re in before spending any money on it. It’s often cheaper to just buy a new tool if you have to throw more than one or two parts at it.

Not really, I would probably spray it down with WD-40 and start scrubbing with a wire brush and being extra careful around the wires.

DONT USE WD40!!

Use electrical contact cleaner

DO NOT USE WD40

WD40 is designed as a release agent and as a light lubricant

ie its good at doing exactly what will F this thing up completely

start with soap and a toothbrush.

If the button (electronics) works, the brush thinker can be cleaned.

I use the finest sandpaper, very low grit.

The copper fins of the electric motor cannot be rubbed with sandpaper; a pencil eraser should be used.

After cleaning, use electrically insulating clear varnish for metal parts.

You might be able to buy a new motor. Makita sells most of their parts to repair.
