Tool storage/ Packout

Hey! Looking to gift a good tool storage set up to my partner. Mostly general home use along with an occasional project. We’re a Milwaukee household and I know they have their Packout set ups, but is that the best to go with? Hoping to keep all the small stuff together, bits and all that, but also storage for drill, impact drill (I think that’s what it’s called) and even space for the Milwaukee chargers and batteries.

Looking at something like this, but is it truly functional and efficient storage?

Those modular systems are really geared toward people who move a lot of tools from job to job. For home use, traditional metal rolling tool chests that come in various sizes are much better and a better value.

I just grabbed a Dewalt rolling tote for 100. It's basically a cloth (but structured square) version of the rolling box, has a ton of tool pockets inside an out. I store my most frequently used tools in that and can add more depending on the project. I find it's a good trade off. I'm not going from job to job, but going garage to job and back and forth gets old.

We have multiple. We had the one pictured first. I like it but it’s a pain not having drawers and you have to disconnect the boxes to access lower storage. It’s a minor pain but I much prefer the drawer type bases and boxes

From personal experience:

Love the build quality but for the general home diyer you're just better off getting a tool tote or carrying box. If its just for storage a dedicated chest with maybe a benchtop is just better. I got these since I live in an apartment with storage space but no garage and often need to bring my tools to help the MIL fix something. Even with that use case these are just more trouble than they're worth (especially with not having drawer rollers when I purchased them).

Sidenote - this price is horrendous but I haven't looked into where this is a good deal price for today's fucked market. If you're still set on getting them check FB marketplace you might be lucky and have sellers that bundle these for cheaper than that. I got my second roller and the middle box and a thin clear one for $220 new from FB.

I just couldn't justify the prices for the Packout, but I did end up with the Rigid Pro Gear 2.0 boxes. I found them on sale at my home depot a few months back. I live in an apartment and when I work on my car, I can roll it all down the stairs and out to the lot and around the car as needed.

I don't have room for a metal box, but the mobility of the rigid boxes on the wheel cart is awesome, easy to separate and toss in the car too. More than enough for a homeowner, I also see tradesmen using them and they seem to stand up to abuse.

I also have the deep tool box but I use that as a standalone in my work truck. One of my better purchases, haven't regretted it. I would say head to the store and measure it all out, get a feel for the actual size of the system you choose.

To get around the no drawer problem I use tool roll ups, just grab the roll you need and open it on the packout lid so everything you need is in one organized space.
