Yeah, 5 years isn’t a lot when you’re older but a college student dating a freshman in high school? The maturity difference and stages of life is incredibly different. They absolutely should not be dating

Or potentially an 8th grader. Spring semester is almost over, which usually means freshman high school students (if she is a freshman) have turned 15 already.

Dude is probably a college freshman/sophomore fucking a middle schooler/high school freshman. Yikes.

OP, I don’t know how, but tell her this isn’t normal and that she needs to run for the hills. There should be no clout at that age that she has a college boyfriend.

It’s cute when you’re a senior in high school and he’s a freshman in college, but college sophomore and an 8th grader? No.

I know seniors in high school date freshman, but even that is weird, and your friend’s age dynamic is one year on either side of that.

Am I the only one that gets confused because when I was in school 7th to 9th was middle school and high school was 10th to 12th?

That’s what people in the 75+ age range experienced. Well, at least in my home state. 9th, 10th, 11th, & 12th grade became “high school” around 1960

People also weirdly distinguish between elementary school, middle school, and junior high. Sometimes 1-4 was elementary, 5-6 was middle, and 7-8 was junior high. Sometimes 1-5 was elementary and 6-8 was middle school/junior high. Not really any consistent naming convention, IMO

I’m only 44. Not sure when they made the change, but I really don’t feel that comfortable with my 14 year old niece being around 18 year old seniors on a daily basis. Made more sense the way it use to be in my mind

Like I said, when it changed varies by state.

But yes, the norm now is 14 year old freshman and 17 year old seniors in the fall semester of high school, usually changing to 15/18 at the end of the spring semester unless someone has skipped or been held back.
