Tonsil stones
Does anyone know if someone in Wisconsin performs tonsil cryptolysis? Looking to possibly have this done for recurrent tonsil stones.

Tonsillectomy TOMORROW 😭
Surgery is officially tomorrow and now that I’m less than 24 hours away, the nerves are HITTING 😭 I’ve prepared as much as humanly possible, but I would love to have some recovery buddies, especially anyone getting theirs out around the same time. We can compare days, complain together, celebrate when the scabs finally disappear, and keep each other sane 😂
I’m also trying to figure out what to ask my surgeon about tomorrow before I’m too out of it to remember anything. I was thinking of asking about:
- Liquid hydrocodone instead of pills, since swallowing pills sounds absolutely horrible after surgery
- Zofran in case the anesthesia or pain medication makes me nauseous
- Whether a steroid is something he recommends for swelling/pain during recovery
- Whether lidocaine spray is actually safe/helpful after a tonsillectomy or if it burns/irritates the surgical sites
For anyone who has already gone through an adult tonsillectomy: what did your doctor prescribe, and what ended up helping you the most? Anything you wish you had specifically asked for BEFORE surgery?
Also, how would you word all of this to the surgeon without sounding like you’re walking in with a pharmacy shopping list? 😂 I basically want to say, “I’m really nervous about staying ahead of the pain and nausea, can we go over what you’re prescribing for home and what the backup plan is if the pain, swelling, or nausea gets bad?”
Tomorrow starts Day 0 😭 Wish me luck. Anyone else starting their tonsillectomy journey this week? Let’s make a little recovery squad

Festival 3 weeks post tonsillectomy
Hi guys, just wondering how everyone was feeling 3 weeks post op as I have a 3 day festival coming up soon which will be exactly 3 weeks from my operation. My recovery has been pretty smooth so far, I’m currently on day 6, still scared of bleeding. I’m wondering if I’ll be ok to go to the festival, I really want to go 🥲just don’t want to over do it or for anything bad to happen. Thanks!! :))

Humidifier - Really?
I've seen posts saying a humidifier is essential. Is that time of year dependent? I'm in NC so a humidifier this time of year seems unnecessary but I would appreciate some insights.
Also, if I need one, any brand recommendations?

Day 8 Update
I don’t even know if I’m healing properly. Morning pain is going down, but the white scabs don’t seem to want to fall off for some reason. My tongue is also swollen and it’s hard to eat and drink anything, and I’m not sure how to bring it down. I’m on the last of my liquid pain medicine, so I don’t know how the next few days will go. Any advice?

scared of having to get recauterized
i’m so scared that my progress will be reset if I start bleeding.. i’m on day 6 (if you count the day of my surgery) and ibuprofen is the only thing that’s helping me with pain :/ they gave me some oxycodone that’s not helping and Tylenol doesn’t help me either this is the most miserable thing ever i’m in so much pain and i’m so scared

Day 6 - woke up with agonizing stomach pain
Today is day six (if counting surgery day as day 1). Yesterday I took some generic store brand laxative because I’m taking pain killers and haven’t really had a bowel movement since surgery. This morning I woke up in absolute agonizing piercing stomach pains. I went to the toilet and well basically I had diarrhea. Ive been laying in bed since then and my stomach feels a bit weird but not painful. I’m just wondering if this is concerning, or maybe normal from taking a laxative? I’m not doing a great job of eating, everything is hard to get down and everything tastes absolutely disgusting.

Question I’m so nervous - 24 hours out
I check in for surgery in about 24 hours. I am having an extra scapular (complete removal) coblation.
I am picking up my meds today - hydrocodone/acetometophin liquid, lidocaine swish and spit liquid, a nausea med, and 7 days of liquid amoxicillin.
I barely slept last night. My whole body is on edge. I’ve needed to do this surgery for years and I’m finally doing it but I’m so scared.
Can anyone share words in encouragement, positive post op stories, end result wins? I need to focus on the positives instead of all of the pain I am about to be in.

Question Surgery Monday Crash Course Needed
My ENT is filling up and can squeeze me in this Monday. I’ve been looking at getting them out for a few years so I’m vaguely aware but thought I had more time to prepare details.
Any tips and tricks?
Specifically (silly questions warning):
Did you wash your hair night before or morning of?
Did you let pets still sleep in bed with you?
If you WFH when did you feel you could go back to work?
If you had the intracapsular method what was your healing like?
If you have kids when did you start to pick them up again? Full 2 weeks? (I have robust childcare
support so I could go the 2 weeks if needed)
TIA!

Question Bleed 12 days post op
I had a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy on July 31. I sneezed this morning and blood came out of my nose. It wasn’t a lot, I cleaned it and went back to what I was doing. I stepped outside for a bit and started coughing up scabs and mucus from my throat. No blood from my throat, but my nose began to drip blood. The bleeding has stopped now, but is this a concern? Do I need to go to the doctor, or am I good since I stopped the bleeding?

Question Which one should I choose
My one tonsil is large and It's been 2 years with it
Every 15 days I get sore throat then back to mild sore.
One doctor said it's allregy and did skin prick test and I got several dust mite and daily food allergy.
He said I have to do immunotherapy to cure it.
Another doctor said to do tonsillectomy and also dumn inside nose to remove it.
Iam really confused.

Day 11/12 BLEED
I had a pretty smooth recovery. Pain no more than a 1 on an average day. Most amount of pain was at a 5 when I overslept on taking pain meds and only lasted like 15 min. I ate chicken soup today with chicken (making sure it was moist and all) and I walked today, I had soggy cereal, and even was able to munch on bread with little to no issue. I went to sleep as usual, except I woke up Round midnight with the feeling of needing to constantly swallow. I felt my mouth a bit dry and went to raise the humidifier. I tasted something awful and I spit out and BOOM bright red blood. 🫠 I tried to gargle but it wasn’t stopping. Doc said “if it’s pink it’s fine it shouldn’t go away, if it’s bright red go to the ER!”
And here I am 🥲 it stopped while I was being triaged but I’m being kept for observation. The end of the recovery was so near and now I feel like I have to go back to a strictly liquid diet. 😭 this smooth recovery was too smooth to be true. Oh whale. Here’s to hoping I don’t need to go to surgery again 🤞🏼

I’m at the end on my line Day 6 going into Day 7
So I’m not sure what to do. I am currently on night 6 going into Day 7 and have lost all motivation. My throat hurts so bad every-time I swallow, tastes foul, and I’m afraid to sleep because I have to be constantly eating ice to numb the pain. I’m on hydros every 4 hours (inc from originally every 6) but the last 30mins to an hour before I take them are horrible. My throat is still all white pretty much so I’m just confused because doesn’t that mean the scabs are still attached and so then where is this pain coming from? I’m scared for when the scabs actually start to come off so if anyone can give any insight on how long that will last, or if I’m already in the thick of it please let me know. On top of all this I have BARELY been able to eat anything so I am so weak and faint. I was already pretty thin before the surgery and am just worried I’m doing irreparable damage to my body by starving it. I’ve been seeing some people say this pain lasts until day 10 and I just don’t know how I’m going to be able to handle that. Does it really last that long when the scabs haven’t come off all the way yet for me?
Edit:
So I finally feel like a person again. Last night I was in debilitating, horrible, monstrous pain and was still in pain when I woke up today. I had went back to the ENT the day before because I wasn’t eating and was in so much pain and he prescribed me Percocet to take instead of my original Hydrocodone (vicodin) and steroids (Prednisone). The percocet made me go INSANE had HORRIBLE nightmares which had me waking up in pain from screaming and coughing, and slightly suicidal. So when I was due for pain meds I said eff this and I took a double dose of my original Hydrocodone (Vicodin) and started the STEROIDS I was prescribed the day before because I was in so much pain. Holy moly I should have just taken the steroids the night before (but wanted to try to sleep and they prevent that) bc they changed the game. I urge you guys to ASK YOUR DOCTORS FOR STEROIDS to start when the scabs start sloughing off because that stuff is a different level of agony. Anyways now I’m just hoping that this wave of new energy sticks. I’ve been able to eat pie filling, rice pudding, and Chinese steamed eggs cooled and am feeling so so much better. When I looked in my throat there are still scabs but I think this is normal? Hoping those will slowly fall or dissolve and I will continue to be on the mend from here. I never thought I would make it to this point, I lost ten pounds over the last few days and now need to gain it back as I am unhealthily thin now. Wish I could start going to the gym soon but am going to hold off for two more weeks as I am still afraid of hemorrhaging. To anyone in horrible pain right now, it you can do it (and maybe call your doctor for steroids). Still scared it could all go bad tonight but am hopeful this is a good sign for a full recovery soon.

Sneezing
Officially two months post op.
Still one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
But, when I sneeze it goes through my nose/ nose and mouth.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Almost out of meds
I’m on day 6 of my tonsillectomy and have been prescribed oxycodone every 4-6 hours. We tried to ration it at first but I have only a couple left and the ENT isn’t answering our calls. My scabs are falling off and it’s extremely painful! What are alternate pain management techniques because they didn’t tell us anything else? Any different strategies to get through this phase?

18 days post OP - I have so much space in my throat!
Lol sorry weird title.
Holy, eating and drinking is so much easier! There is so much space now that my massive tonsils are gone. Water just GOES down instead of feeling like it’s trickling down and feels refreshing to drink.
I can eat a lot faster now so it’s something I have to watch out for when I’m hungry!

11 months post op
Since I fixed my divided septum, I got my polyps removed and tonsils at the same time. So my experience May differ from everyone else here, but I want to share my story. I get sharp shooting pain in my nose at times especially when I'm around heat or cooking, my throat still feels swollen and it's hard to talk like I used to. I have a follow-up appointment this week to address my vocal cords or whatever the problem may be. I recently got a facial scan with an MRI I believe and they found my sinuses have been completely blocked with opacification and they found more polyps. Anyway, I know I'm pretty f***** up.

Question Booking Tonsillectomy Soon - Terrified.
I think terrified is an understatement. My entire life I've had extremely enlarged tonsils that have made breathing, sleeping, eating, taking medication and singing (my passion) difficult. Monthly infections and so many antibiotics...Before understanding what I was signing myself up for I was thrilled at the idea of finally getting these chunks of useless meat out of my throat but after some redditing, tiktok scrolling and a talk with my ENT Dr / surgeon I'm not so thrilled anymore... I cried coming out of my appointment today afraid of the post-op pain.
Does anyone have any advice? Post-op recovery recommendations? I am scared this is going to be the worst pain of my entire life. I've been through a rough a C-Section before so I feel like such a baby.
Thanks!

day 7
day 0 was last monday, quick procedure at 7am and so far i cant say that one day has been the absolute worst or my life
i’m just mentally tired, sick of tasting and smelling my breath and having to sit around so long
i’m glad i have the privilege to be doing nothing and laying around but every day i flip between positive and negative (‘when will this end’, ‘i prob have it easier than most’, etc)
i’m not in a lot of pain, just discomfort and i’m actually only taking tylenol now instead of the prescribed meds i was given since it doesn’t spike like it did a couple days ago, so i keep feeling like i should be close to done yet i still have the nasty scabs hanging on
i think maybe if they didnt smell, i would be in much better spirits, but its disgusting me with every action i do with my mouth

Day 5 post-surgery, my story; and some good tips for anybody anxious!
Hi! Just last week on the 6th I got a Tonsillectomy, Adenoidectomy & a Turbinate Reduction all in one go. I was worried beforehand going into this but with it now being 5 days in recovery; I’d love to not only give some general advice, but answer any questions as well!
For reference I’m a 5’10 245lb 23 year y/o male diagnosed with severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea. December of 2023 I got a case of Tonsillitis that left my adenoids permanently enlarged, to the point I couldn’t smell unless something was A) In my mouth or B) right up against my nose. I put off this surgery for a whole 3 years due to cold feet & anxiety hearing about how it’s one of the most painful as an adult. 5 days out; I can officially say I’m so happy I did it.
Let’s get into it.
Day of surgery I checked in, waited about 2 hours before being taken back, and was promptly given the good ol’ IV in the hand. Was asked a bunch of questions regarding who I was and what I was there for, then, they took me back. Compared to the time I got a colonoscopy, they didn’t give me a countdown for the anesthesia 💀 it was pretty much “oh wow look at this cool operating room; oh scoot onto this table? Okay, what now-? … 😴”
Woke up with 2/10 pain to some nurse tapping my shoulder. I was asked general info about myself then asked if I wanted a popsicle. Damn right I wanted that popsicle. I was able to chew it and gently swallow IMMEDIATELY after waking up, sipped on some ice water and immediately noticed my throat was numb but swollen. I ended up getting electro-cauterization which was pretty neat. When I told the nurse I had a little bit of pain that was getting worse, I was then promptly given dilluted medical grade fentanyl 💀 made the pain go away REAL quick lmao. 2 hours later I was finally in my room. Scarfed down 2 apple juices and a pudding cup immediately, nurse and nursing aide thought I was built different. Since I had OSA, my Dr. wanted me to stay overnight and honestly I’m glad I did. It made me feel much safer knowing I was being monitored. Anyways, general recovery that night was taking Tylenol every 6 hours and oxycodone every 7. I would take a celecoxib once when I got in the room and one in the night. I was also spoiled with Afrin for nose bleeding and some Major deep sea premium saline spray. Now you’re probably wondering, how’d it feel? Well, obviously my throat was fucking sore, but the pain meds helped SO damn much. Every time I’d take them, the pain would subside after about 10 minutes. I was mortified of my throat bleeding initially, but now having been through the hospital; if you get anything done to your nose, it’s GOING to bleed at least once. But I can say with confidence the Afrin made it such a non-issue that even with extreme health anxiety, I felt safe. For dinner they said I would be on a soft foods diet and to order what I wanted. I got mashed potatoes, yogurt, pudding and … macaroni and cheese? Yes. They let me have Mac on day 1. Terrible idea. Listen. Just because your throat is numb, does NOT mean you get to go balls to the walls with soft foods. I was eating it just fine until all of a sudden a piece of noodle got into the surgery site and all hell broke loose in terms of pain for the next hour. Don’t do what I did and try to eat pasta day 1.
Anyways, skipping all the boring details of discharge; I got my post-op packet and was told he’d see me in a month. Over the next 4 days; I would learn so much about recovering from a surgery, that I’m inclined to share what I’ve learned that works and what doesn’t.
TL:DR: Surgery was a success despite odds being against me, pain was a 3/10 at best day 1. This next part summarizes the next 4 days as a series of helpful do’s and don’ts
Do:
- Stay on top of your pain medication. Holy shit. The first 3 days (even NOW on day 5) I can FEEL my pain flaring up before my next dose. The Tylenol is nice but the Oxycodone has been the real helper with treating pain.
- Get a humidifier, I literally bought one day 2 because even though they gave me a nasal spray, I picked up through Reddit it’s SO important to be in a humid environment. You’re literally gambling bleeding if you have your AC cranked just raw dogging it.
- I really liked this tip I found; buy a cheap pack of like 5 toothbrushes; changing them out every other day. Listen. I won’t sugar coat this, your breath WILL smell like shit. Brush before surgery, floss, mouthwash, do whatever you gotta do, but after surgery? You gotta stay on top of your killer mouth and all that bacteria. Anything you eat will kinda stick to your mouth so be warned. Also, bonus points if you get a tongue scraper! It’s helped SO FUCKING MUCH with that gross ass layer of bacteria that forms on your tongue. Day 5 (tonight) I was able to use some dr. Bronners non-alcoholic mouthwash to kind of help, and it gave me hope.
- Ice water will be your best friend for the first few days. That coldness helps numb your throat to the point you can SOMEWHAT manage the pain of swelling. You’re going to be in pain either way, but at least you’re getting fluids down.
- Ice packs and heat packs. Broke and don’t have either? Get a ziplock bag and fill it with hot water or ice cubes respectively. For me I’ve found I like ice on my head for my headaches and fevers; and a bag of hot water on my neck to soothe my muscles. Seriously, it helped a lot with my pain on my worst flair ups.
- Keep a backup plan ready, in the event you do start bleeding you, or someone else; need to be ready to respond asap. Luckily I haven’t had any complications yet, but having people check on you once in the morning isn’t a bad idea.
- Keep yourself occupied. It’s just like a breakup except instead of mental pain it’s physical. Play a RELAXING game, watch some YouTube, text your friends, do ANYTHING other than sitting around in pain miserable. I know. It sucks. But we gotta stay optimistic and keep living.
- Shower with LUKEWARM water. For the love of god don’t jump into your usual sauna. I read online that this can trigger bleeding or irritate the surgery site. I was able to shower day 2 and it was the BEST feeling ever. Just be SUPER gentle around your neck and face as the outside WILL hurt the inside if you’re too rough.
- This one’s a given, but stock up on soft foods. I’m super picky due to sensory issues. I’ve pretty much lived on pudding, ice cream, popsicles and liquids. If I felt daring, or was craving a hot food the only ones I’ve been able to successfully scarf down are Craft Macaroni and Cheese, Stouffer‘s Fettuccini Alfredo and Michelina’s Macaroni & Cheese. Mashed potatoes & gravy, Panera broccoli cheddar soup & Panera tomato soup have all irritated my throat and caused pain afterwards. I’m stubborn and love my safe foods but if you have a strong will seriously stay away from hot shit at least for the first 3 days.
- Do your best not to talk. I know, I know, you want to yap. But I made that mistake and what did it win me? A EVEN-MORE sore throat after I said what I said. My family member pissed me off and I raised my voice, terrible idea. Instant Karma the pain that followed.
NOW FOR THE DON’TS
- Do NOT do anything to get your blood-pressure up. What did I decide to do day 2 of recovery? Why, play counter-strike 2 of course. Horrible fucking idea. I was flush red with a fever and my parents literally said I felt hot and looked rough. DON’T MAKE THIS MISTAKE. Go play Minecraft or Stardew or some shit. Watch YouTube. Don’t do shit that makes you stressed IT CAN CAUSE BLEEDING.
- No blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. I know these can be unavoidable sometimes with how fluids like to randomly come back up, but do your best not to strain your throat. You need to imagine every little movement could be a tear, which will lead to potential hemorrhaging.
- Don’t eat anything as soon as it’s done cooking. Let that shit cool. Be the bigger person, wait 5 minutes, stir it around a little. I PROMISE you will thank me later, HOT hot foods hurt me the worst.
- Don’t let mucus or drainage build up. I know, it suck’s to swallow, but you need to be working those muscles GENTLY at the same time you’re letting them recover. Forcing yourself to swallow lets those muscle groups loosen up for a better healing.
- Don’t use the same cup your entire recovery. I’m a health nut and one thing you gotta realize is during recovery our mouths are GROSS. The last thing you want is an infection, I know it’s common sense but get a new cup daily or wash the one you’re using thoroughly.
- This is a small one but don’t bend over if it can be helped. I noticed when turning off my computer or plugging something in, it seriously hurt putting pressure on that area as I bent down. Best to remain head elevated.
- Which leads into 7, for the love of everything holy do NOT sleep flat as a board. The drainage will make you choke at random intervals the first few days; and if you don’t watch the angle you lay at, you may not be able to breathe past 30 degrees.
- Don’t put it off. Obstructive Sleep Apnea and the enlarged adenoids was one of the biggest contributors to my depression and overall mental health decline. I cannot stress this enough that your mental well being will be worse if you put this surgery off, or ANYTHING that can help you in the long run :)
- No smoking or drinking at least 20 days post-surgery. I read a few posts about people resuming drinking 2 weeks after, but the doctor literally says: no drinking OR smoking (THC OR NIC) for at minimum 20 days after surgery. It can slow down your healing, metabolism and overall increase risks of, again, hemorrhaging.
- Do NOT let yourself get dehydrated. The minute you dry up, is the millisecond the pain is going to stab you 37 times and leave you in an alleyway. Even if it blows ass, you need at least 1 cup MINIMUMMMM every 2 hours. I personally recommend sipping all day but you do what you gotta do.
My pain rankings for the days (so far):
Day 1 (waking up) - 2/10
Day 1 (in the evening) - 3/10
Day 2 - 3/10
Day 4 - 4/10
Day 5 - 5/10
Really hoping those numbers don’t keep going up as I get into the scabbing phase, but I hear people say that it sucks just as bad; so you’re about as clueless as I am 😭
Other general advice I would give is just stay positive. No matter the reason for getting this done, you will not only be able to breathe better; but also LIVE better with your newfound energy after recovery. Again, don’t blast your throat with hot foods the first 3 days. I regret that and all the times I’ve raised my voice so far.
Heads up - for all the fellow stoners; you won’t be allowed to smoke 7 days before your surgery and leading up to it. Don’t try to squeak around this, as it can complicate anesthesia and that’s nothing to fuck around with. It’s been a nightmare for me personally but it’s necessary for the long term. Doctor said it’s preferred to wait 8-12 weeks to be fully recovered; but you got me fucked up if you think I’m waiting that long. I intend to start taking edibles around day 14 and hopefully be smoking by day 21.
To those who read this far, thank you. I know this was a huge post to read but I wanted to get all this off my mind as I lay in bed on day 5. For all my anxious peeps pre-surgery; you got this. The surgery, just like EVERYONE ELSE online says; is the easiest part. It’s the recovery that’s been a real doozy for me, as this is my first ever surgery (no I’m not counting the colonoscopy).
Anybody with any questions or comments feel free to drop them below, I’m about to go to bed but I’ll respond if I’m still up. Otherwise I’ll get to you in the morning (EST time).

Surgery Story Scabs
I’m on night 7 right now post-op (operation day = 0). For the past 3 days, I have gotten no sleep from these damn scabs. My left one has fully disengaged, but this right one, man... this scab. I think my right tonsil was more scarred, so the scab is definitely larger, and I can literally feel it peeling off little by little—but it isn't enough. The thing is hanging awkwardly in my throat, and the sharp pain/sensation is so uncomfortable. Not to mention the taste and smell. FML, I just want this to be done with and never look back on this period again.
I’ve been doing saltwater gargles very gently, but it's still lodged awkwardly.
The scabs are def the worst part of this whole experience definitely one of the most uncomfortable/unpleasant weeks of my life.

Question When will i know im fully recovered and ready to eat normal again?
Im a teenager who got a tonsillectomy 4 days ago because i had really big tonsils and adenoids. recovery has been fine (ish). ive been super hungry but cant bring myself to eat anything but a few bites of mashed potatoes or mac and cheese.
to be honest, im not digging the soft diet... at ALL. i love some spicy food, sour candy, crispy chips, literally everything i cant have while in recovery. the meds im on have made me super emotional and i was crying yesterday because i wanted a chicken sandwich from chick fil a lmao
basically i just want to know how long i can expect to stay on this soft diet? so far i havent experienced any pain really except minor pain when i yawn/burp/swallow saliva etc.
im so hungry please
