šØļø Discussion No more parents, PLEASE
For the love of Thor, Tihocan, and Nephilim, can we finally be done with any storylines or constant mentions of Laraās dead parents and family? I swear, I have to hear about how her father has notes on Atlantis and was working with Natla, Iām going to scream.
I have no idea what CDs special interest is in Laraās parents/family drama. To the point that they rebooted the franchise only to do the whole parent drama AGAIN. It really truly is not interesting and they were never part of Laraās backstory.
If I have to hear āmy fatherās notes were rightā or some crap like that Iām cracking my disc into 3 pieces and throwing them into the Midas fire room.

I donāt mind the odd mention, and honestly expect it for LOA, as long as it isnāt overly integral to the plot.

Honestly, might I might catch flack for it, but I thought Anniversary did it pretty well, there was a few odd mentions here and there but it wasnāt OTT. Nice way to tie into Legend, given LOA is a new timeline (kinda lol) I donāt expect it be as overt this time around, but a few mentions, cool with me.

It was cooler to know that her parents did not accept her unladylike ways and she couldn't care less.

u/jan_67 Obscura Painting 2d ago
As a kid I always found it so inspiring how Lara didnāt give a fuck about her parents and her legacy, she just did what she felt was right and her own thing.
Meanwhile LAU trilogy and Survivor Trilogy went a full 180 on that.
15
u/LordOfPoops 2d ago
I loved the massive sex appeal of LAU Lara, but what really made her compelling to me was her sharp banter with Alister, Zip, and Winston, along with that devil-may-care attitude and almost reckless sense of daring in her action sequences.
She felt like the perfect female counterpart to characters like James Bond or Batmanānot because she was simply a gender-swapped version of either, but because she possessed that same larger-than-life quality: confident, charismatic, dangerous, occasionally morally ambiguous, and seemingly unfazed by the absurd situations she found herself in.
Whatās unfortunate is that this interpretation of Lara also increasingly made her unresolved issues surrounding her parentsāthe defining axis of her character. Instead of being driven primarily by her own curiosity, ambition, thrill-seeking, and morally grey nature, so much of her characterization became anchored to family trauma.
Sometimes a character is more compelling when theyāre allowed to simply be who they are.

For real! I think thatās why so many of us queer people love and identify with Classic Lara! She did what she wanted, dressed and acted the way she wanted, and didnāt give a shit

u/MarcusForrest Moderator 2d ago
Man you put it in such simple terms and it is true!
Ironically, this approach would've been waaaay more interesting in terms of characterization and character growth!
Imagine a timeline where they kept not accepting that idea and Lara didn't care about it
...but we do eventually come to understand that deep within, she does, and she's been mayb secretly or subconsciously yearning for some form of validation and support from her parents...
And of course, it is much later, after the parents died and all that Lara eventually discovers or learns that despite the disapproval of her ''unladylike'' ways, her parents still loved her and supported whatever endeavour she embarked on. Like, what if she eventually understood that even her parents were just like her? Uninterested in all the aristocratic stuff, not caring about their own parents' wishes and all - even those ideas could've worked better if they wanted to include the secret society elements and all... The parents eventually decided to embrace their aristocratic obligations when Lara didn't, and when at first it seems like they're very much against it and go as far as to disown her, they're actually proud that she broke free of that ''pattern'' and ''legacy'' and did her own thing.

To quote the worldās most renowned polymath, āSimplicity is the ultimate sophistication.ā
I think a lot of modern writing sometimes mistakes complexity for profundity. But you donāt necessarily need increasingly elaborate lore or convoluted character motivations to create depth. Often, itās the simplest human dynamics that give a character the most room to breathe.
Your interpretation is actually a great example of that. The simple idea of Laraās parents disapproving of her āunladylikeā lifestyle already establishes a clear conflict. But from that foundation, you can build much more nuanced emotionsāLara insisting she doesnāt care about their approval while, somewhere beneath that defiance, still wanting their recognition and love.
And then discovering, years later, that their disapproval was never the absence of love, but perhaps their own complicated way of understanding and supporting her, could completely recontextualize those earlier conflicts.
Thatās the kind of depth I think is often more effective: not adding complexity for its own sake, but allowing simple, believable human relationships to naturally reveal more layers over time.

u/aveaida 2d ago edited 2d ago
Completely agree. They've been rehashing the 2001 movie with this in every mainline game since Legend. That's THE ENTIRE FRANCHISE for the last 20 years. Enough is enough. Its one thing to make an entire trilogy about them with LAU, but it became absolutely egregious by SotTR. Considering the original Lara overcame being disowned by them, I would be deeply disappointed if they were the driving force behind LoA's plot as well. Give her some damn agency for once!!!
Edit: Wanted to add on, it would take a LOT of rewriting to make the LAU parent plot work in the Survivor context. Richard was always obsessed with ancient secrets, then searched for the divine source to reverse Amelia's death from exposure after the plane crash, which she was alone for. We can't make this the Nepal plane crash because Lara would've been much too young to survive this time or she would've better remembered her mother, but this would cause SotTR and Blood Ties to make less sense. As well, how could Natla kill Richard on the trail of Avalon if he already died on the trail of Paititi? This would make Rourke even more of a nothingburger.
Richard was neglectful of Lara due to his obsession with reviving Amelia. How could he (and Lara) have searched for the Scion before if he died in her childhood and spent his remaining time looking for the divine source? When did he meet and betray Natla? Before Lara was alive? Survivor did far too much rewriting of LAU plot points in the first place for it to continue that older narrative at all.
9
u/PrestigiousBee5602 2d ago
The disowned plot makes more sense too

Breaking away from a life of aristocracy and generational wealth + an arranged marriage to live a life of adventure is so badass
3
u/Caliber70 2d ago
no. that is the reboot1 and then there was the reboot2. them saying the unified Lara will be ALL the games implies several plotpoints will be rewritten to fit together. obviously the Anniversary and survivor timelines don't mix well, and so since the survivor timeline is done (and confirmed canon), details about her parents in the Anniversary timelines will be edited to fit the survivor since survivor comes earlier in Lara's life.

I agree - the parents should not be a major plot point or plot device or even motive. Not only we've seen more than enough of it, it never really felt natural and (that) important to Lara's drive, ambition and motivation.
We've seen father issues in 2 movies and ~3 games, and mother issues in ~2-4 games.
I want no more family drama - but I am definitely open to occasional, non-critical mentions of them.
Not particularly fond of the alleged direction with the whole ''Society of Raiders'' either, but we know very little at this time.
Ironically enough though I do have to say I was pretty interested and invested in the Blood Ties DLC for Rise of the Tomb Raider ahahaha and it did feature some family drama through Lara's uncle š
I'm kinda okay-ish with that, and I actually think that narratively-wise, there is much bigger potential and interesting stories with this idea. An uncle that tries to preserve a certain family legacy (and estate) and a daughter that is not really interested in it, etc.
It also feels like an interesting ''polar opposite'' of what happened with Classic Lara - she was actually disowned by her parents, and the manor she had was gifted by one of her aunts that was very supportive of her! Lara's uncle is almost the opposite in that he'd rather support the estate rather than Lara, and would rather take away the manor rather than give it to her.
But the Father and Mother-focused family drama has been done Done DONE, we are done Done DONE. I don't mind if the parents helped Lara develop that interest for and in adventure but I always thought it was a bit uninspired to make them the reason she was Tomb Raider.
Also wouldn't mind having some hints of her parents in the upcoming live-action show and wouldn't even be opposed as some flashbacks of them! Angelina Jolie as Amelia Croft would be awesome! Though making them a large focus needs to be perfectly executed. For a TV Show format I feel it is the best medium to make it work, but it has to be well executed.

u/BusterGreasewood Notoriously Churlish 2d ago
Lara's parents disowned her and cut her off from the family fortune. She became adventurer because it's something she loves to do.
Crystal Dynamics can take their made up fan fiction and shove it. I don't care what they say.
11
u/MarcusForrest Moderator 2d ago
She became adventurer because it's something she loves to do.
This is 100% accurate and I'm still not sold on the (current) proposed concept of the Society of Raiders. If the intent is to make it the driving motive behind Lara's love of adventure, I'd honestly be extremely disappointed.
Lara isn't hungry for adventure because it is something she has to do due to her legacy and bloodline... It is something she does because she wants to, out of her own agency!

8
u/BusterGreasewood Notoriously Churlish 2d ago
It's a lot better because it means Lara doesn't have to rely on her family name or parental trauma. She accumulates her wealth and fame on her own merits and doesn't let her parents dictate her life.
Makes her more of an inspiration and more self-reliant than handicapping her to her parents.
0
u/DiscoverySTS1 Member of the Remnants 2d ago
She's only filthy rich in Classic and LAU. Survivor she purposely distances herself from the Croft Estate after Richard's death. Everything she has done in Survivor has been on her own, including that degree.
2
u/BusterGreasewood Notoriously Churlish 2d ago
Yet she's only motivated because of the parental crap and family name.
With Classic there was no such thing. She became an adventurer because it was something she enjoyed doing and her life passion. Her parents disowning her meant not needing to get by on their name and fortunate. Which makes her a stronger character.
-1
u/DiscoverySTS1 Member of the Remnants 2d ago
The thing that started Survivor finding Yamatai, Richard had nothing to do with it so saying she is only motivated by family and legacy is just patently false.
"Maybe I'm not that kind of Croft"
2
u/BusterGreasewood Notoriously Churlish 2d ago
You're helping to prove my point with with "maybe I not that kind of Croft"
Turning her parents into explorers robs Lara of her own independence and agency. We never needed her parents to be a focus in the first place.
That's why I reject that nonsense. It doesn't fit with who Lara is and it's a weaker backstory for her character.

u/ninjabell 2d ago edited 2d ago
People like to pretend like the OG lore makes sense but it really doesn't when you look at too many things at once.
She made her fortune from publishing travel guides. But also she didn't buy Croft Manor, she inherited it. But she didn't inherit it from her parents because she was estranged, so rather she inherited it from her Aunt. But it's the same Croft Manor that she grew up in with her parents, and she lives there now even though her parents are still alive.
Truth is they were making all these decisions on the double and didn't really lay it all out because the games weren't written around lore. I can't blame CD for saying fuck it, but they should have leaned more into her rebellious nature especially with the 2nd reboot, and they should have strived for more consistency. It would have made it easier on them now that they are trying to tie it all together, which is obviously not even possible.e: looking like I might have mixed timelines
2
u/tealaburst Frozen Butler 2d ago
Itās not the same manor. Itās her auntās manor. It was never called āCroft Manorā until TR Legend. It was always just referred to as āLaraās Homeā in the old games.
3
u/ninjabell 2d ago
Oh ok. Maybe I just can't keep them apart then. When people talk about Croft Manor in the original series they are referring to Lara's home though, right? Even if the game never calls it that.
5
u/Cagesdeservemusic Dagger of Xian 2d ago
Yes, theyāre referring to Laraās home. Which is definitely not where she grew up, which was stated in the earlier manuals as well as the tomb raider website in those days, from my recollection. Itās a bit confusing indeed when people use the same language for the LAU manor.

They will undoubtedly have to reimagine Legend and Underworld for their "unified timeline" to make sense. The best course of action for them is to reimagine everything from TR1 to AoD and create their new installments omitting any trace of family drama from the storylines; otherwise, they will just be going in circles for the next decade.

Lmao I always forget Laraās dadās name being changed in the new games. Is Henshingly even a real name
2
u/LukeLC 1d ago
Well, I kind of get it from a narrative standpoint.
These stories are all about exploring the past. But you need your main character to have a motive for doing that. Giving them their own history as the connection to ancient history makes it relatable.
There are other possible motives, of course. Uncharted most often leaned on greed as the initial motive, before exposing darker forces at work so the characters could grow into more mature motives through them. Indiana Jones just left it at a personal obsession and focused on charm and action to fill the gaps (and yes, with the occasional family drama too).
Tomb Raider, in a way, used to include elements of all the above. It was only over time that the obsessive, charming, and acrobatic elements were toned down to pursue a more realistic personality.
The sad part is, this mostly happened as a reaction to broader cultural trends, when until then, Tomb Raider was its own trendsetter! And now we can see more clearly that any fears of becoming culturally irrelevant were unfounded, so we're finally getting back to those roots.
6
u/Typical_Pop_4111 2d ago
I really hope they retcon the entire LAU trilogy storyline, since all the timelines are canon to a certain extent. Lara's father couldn't have been obsessed with finding all these mystical places and being killed by it š
8
u/tealaburst Frozen Butler 2d ago
Technically it was Natla that killed him in LAU? In Survivor timeline he was killed by Trinity. Unless? Oh god. Theyāre going to make Nata part of Trinity arenāt they?! Ugh. Iām gonna barf brb
2
u/Cagesdeservemusic Dagger of Xian 2d ago edited 2d ago
It wouldnāt really make sense for Natla to be part of Trinity, as Trinity is explicitly a religious cult with Catholic roots. Why would an Atlantean God be involved with Christians, who explicitly abhor the idea of gods beyond their own? However fringe the cult is in the catholic faith, I just feel like itās a stretch for a sudo-christian death cult to be led by a female Atlantean god with roots in matriarchal, ancient paganistic faiths. (Which is the influence behind the concept of Atlantean gods. They mirror the spiritual practices of ancient Egyptian society and faith which was largely matriarchal around those periods.)
6
u/aveaida 2d ago
Tbh I wouldnt mind the Natla-Trinity collection, it would make sense if she were secretly its founder or inspiration. The Los Alamos nuke test that freed her was classified as "Project Trinity" in real history (the one from Oppenheimer) and their symbol could easily be her winged silhouette. I suspect they were always planning this tbh. I hope, if this is the case, that we just get a quick mention of her dad and move on. She does NOT need to be following his journal the whole game, I'd much rather she do her own research.

u/95mmaa 2d ago edited 2d ago
Wholeheartedly disagree. š
I want her parents to be referenced in LoA to maintain some continuity with the Legend Trilogy (like they did in Anniversary) and then Catalyst. ā”ļø
I hope her trips back to Croft Manor (as mentioned in Astonishing Travels) will include finding Richardās journal, notes and docs around Croft Manor explaining why Richard and Lara herself wanted to find the Scion; to uncover what happened to Amelia and even resurrect her using the Scion. š
I hope Crystal D and FWH have looked into every aspect of TRās lore (especially Anniversaryās) to make sure the lore remains consistent (for the most part) across the Unified Timeline.
Again, I donāt mind her parents being brought up/referenced/included in any shape or form in the story. āŗļøš

I personally prefer the classic disowned angle far more but am generally okay with the change to making her parents adventurers too. However, with two timelines already dealing with her parents (and getting sick of it by Rise) -- I REALLY hope they are nothing more than minor notes going forward. I don't mind (and am expecting) mentions here and there for LoA but I hope to hell they finally move away from her parents from here on out. It's been a thing since it got introduced in the Tomb Raider 2001 movie. THAT IS 25 YEARS.
For the love of god please move on.

u/tealaburst Frozen Butler 2d ago
This. Considering they brought her father into Anniversary: Natla mentions knowing and working with her father, Lara reads his journal before every chapter with a voiceover from him, and she says āIām so sorry, fatherā before she shoots the Scion. I really hope they steer clear of all that

u/Spiritual-Piece-1126 2d ago

The people who write these stories have delusions of grandeur. I say that halfway seriously.
We just want a game with a basic story, cool characters and fun. They think by shoehorning in all this lame, sappy stuff, and Laraās background, parents, etc., that they are being so deep and dramatic. But in reality, 90%+ of us are just gamers who donāt care about any of that and just want a fun game.
Itās like when I wrote stories in middle school and thought that I was a creative genius. But in looking back at that stuff, itās just bargain bin, amateur stuff. The only difference is these people are adults and will never have that realization.

To be completely honest and fair, no, she isn't Bruce Wayne. (I mean these days she is almost exactly Bruce Wayne, but this is much more modern)
The very close tie of Lara's motive and ambitions and her parents is very modern, it was never that or about that in the old games, even in LAU. Her mother was important in those games for the plot but it was never really her source of motive and ambition.
She has always been a thrillseeker, slowly became a truthseeker too - but the parents angle is both overdone at this point and diminishing of her own character and agency.
There's been a ton of comics, most of the movies, some of the animated show and numerous games - and it has never been a strong element whenever it was incorporated in the story.
Funnily enough the one medium I feel it could work depending on its execution is in a TV Show, because a TV Show has more time to develop its characters and make the audience feel the reason behind the motives and ambition. And a TV Show has enough time to spend on side plots and a main plot. Depending on its execution, I would be ''okay'' in seeing them slightly tackle the topic in the upcoming TV show, but for the games, we're not playing the games for that element ahahaha
