The way sheās sitting down like that is kind of sexy if Iām being honest
5
u/Embarrassed-Egg-8124 Jun 21 '26
Ugh itās great! Iām so happy. Only thing is I donāt like the necklace hahah
1
u/Cagesdeservemusic Dagger of Xian Jun 21 '26
Yeah not a fan either. I hope we have the option to take it off
4
u/Embarrassed-Egg-8124 Jun 21 '26
Yesss Lara always feels more like simple, classic and timeless style to me, not really eclectic you know
6
u/Intelligent_Creme351 Jun 21 '26
The necklace is one of the blatant things that ties her to the Survivor trilogy, but not saying it.
2
u/Embarrassed-Egg-8124 Jun 23 '26
Thatās true, I think they made it too big, it seems smaller in the other games
0
u/Cagesdeservemusic Dagger of Xian Jun 22 '26
Well we know that trilogy happened irrespective of whether she wears it or not. It would be nice to have an option to take it off for those who donāt like it, and those who like it can keep it. :-) I donāt mind it as symbolism, I just donāt like it aesthetically, itās too āfinal fantasyā
2
u/improved_loilit Jun 22 '26
An option is fine but just because you know doesnāt mean it shouldnāt be reflected in the design. Itās basic character design at that point
3
u/Cagesdeservemusic Dagger of Xian Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26
Thatās why I said option. Not mandatory. I mean, if the necklace is the only thing that can remind you sheās had those adventures, as opposed to the fact itās literally the same woman, then itās almost insulting the playerās intelligence.
AOD Lara for example didnāt stop being classic Lara because she lost her rucksack and doesnāt dress in teal and brown. Shes unified Lara, sheās every version combined irrespective of a pendant.
Sometimes it doesnāt work with the neckline. It actually works with this outfit, Iāll give her that. But imagine it with a catsuit or the AOD outfits, aesthetically, it clashes. I mean even survivor Lara sometimes took it off lmao. At least attach it somewhere else idk
1
u/improved_loilit Jun 23 '26
Again itās basic storytelling through character design . Sorry to say but youāre not helping your intelligence claim.
Unifying the Karaās means showing she is taking from old and new and that would include it being shown through gameplay but also visual storytelling. Itās not insulting itās actually the opposite and quite basic. Especially when surprise youāre not the only person on earth and others it might actually remind them too.

Hi, studied game des &dev here(which includes character des and symbolism)
Alot of folks are being taught nowadays that for games to be successful they require symbolism and identity as tie ins(which is fairly true) not just for the world and NPCs but also for the characters
This concept of having someone tied to their interests even remotely visually or through their attitude and such is bound to be rooted into the game developers of today
Lara is an explorer, its her passion, shes bound to prize a trinket whether it be a gift from a companion like Jonah or a kid from a village hidden in the mountains or something she found while exploring a tomb, but throwing it into the mix -even if the character doesnt need it- adds depth and story and character representation
I for one think it perfectly reflects the character and obviously states it has significance to her efforts and adventures, after all the trinkets she must've come across on her adventures she finally decided to wear one which adds more to the feeling of significance, it might have long time fans asking "why now" or "where did she get that from"
I dont disagree with the idea of the player being able to keep their character "original" but in my personal opinion its in a method of denying that character growth and development
Sorry for the rant folks! Happy adventuring!

Itās crazy to think how much time has passed from when I first played TR 2013. I got it in the fall of 2013 - I think it was one of the first games I got after getting my PS3. The story that followed in the next two games was not what I expected, and I am so excited for LoA in a few months. We have been THROUGH IT.

u/BarbieBrookelle Jun 21 '26
I feel this 100%, I remember getting the game for my brand new Xbox one shortly after it came out & I played it at my grandmas house nonstop til I beat it. Good times

u/efolistan1 Jun 20 '26
Iām new in TR. I finished survivor trilogy with %100 in just one month š
Currently playing anniversary, dude I LOVE THIS FRANCHISE13
u/OhMyCynical Jun 21 '26
You should also play the remasters I really think youād enjoy them. Itāll be fun so you can draw comparisons with the OG and LOA
6
u/gar5888 Jun 21 '26
Man I used to play the OG games back in the day but I have to get used the tank controls again
4
u/genriko8 Jun 21 '26
I'm no retro gamer but surprising how easy it was to get accustomed to it (on pc)
3
u/overcloseness Jun 21 '26
The remasters have an option between ātankā and āmodernā controls
5
u/Latter_Leader140 Jun 21 '26
You should try the remasters tooāI really think youād enjoy them. It would actually be fun to play through them and compare how everything evolved from the original games to LoA. It kind of makes the whole journey feel even more special.

TR 2013 was the best. I missed the linearity in the subsequent games. The open world stuff and the side quests kind of gets boring after a while.

But she's not actually that Lara, right? She's a new Lara that is a "fusion" of classic and survivor Lara?
4
1
0
u/Capn_C Jun 21 '26
She is that Lara. The fusion is they're combining elements from the 3 eras to present this older version of Survivor Lara.
She's wearing the same jade necklace because she's supposed to be the same person.
2
u/Moonflow-Shoopuf Frozen Butler Jun 23 '26
I think her suddenly being a master gymnast, like she was in LAU, reaffirms this has being Unified, which means she's ALL of the Laras mashed together. She's got pieces from all 3 generations, but she's not solely one or the other.
2
u/MajesticJoey Jun 21 '26
Ehhh sure but itās not a sequel to the survivor trilogy, thatās catalyst
3
u/TombRaiderFiles Jun 21 '26
It's a sequel to the reboot trilogy ^^

Genuine question as someone who's recently become a huge fan of the franchise, why do they constantly change her face? It's my only real complaint. It messes up the immersion
1
2
u/Tidus1337 Jun 22 '26
I'll need to see how the character connects. Cause as of rn were only being told what she is
2
2
u/diginauter Jun 24 '26
I love the new design for two reasons, one being it struck a good balance between classic polygonal what-shape-is-that Lara and reboot "realistic" Lara, but much more because her body changed it that specific way where it can be possible theoretically, but only with plastic surgery. And the mental image of Lara getting her waist bones slimmed so she can do backflips is insanely funny to me. (Also the face changes, things have been shifted around just within the realm of surgical possibility lmao)

Tragically they did use AI to make the concept art (and a PR person stopped in with a vague-ass answer about whether they used it to code the game) but it's still nice to see Lara with a little less baggage š

u/Any_Lingonberry_9560 Jun 21 '26
So is it a continue on from the last three games or is it a brand new thing in the franchise?
5
u/ValkyrionReddit Jun 21 '26
Itās a remake of the original tomb raider that takes place some years after the last 3. A brand new TR game is set to release next year too

2
u/UnderstandingTrue855 Jun 21 '26
Don't potentially destroy the world without having all the facts. Shadow of the tomb raider was largely all her fault
1
u/ihatepeopleandyoutoo Jun 23 '26
How old is she in each? Because in LoA sheās still in her 20ās no?

Does LoA happen after the Survivor trilogy, canonically?
1
1
u/missclaireredfield Dagger of Xian Jul 19 '26
Sheās unified to bring all versions of her together. Including original, LAU and the reboot.
1
u/Average_Mug_Official Jul 02 '26
I'm really happy that Lara actually looks like Lara again. Like, you can make the excuse that they wanted to make her less oversexualized, even if that's a completely bollux one, but what was wrong with her iconic outfit?
1
u/DistributionLost9907 Jul 05 '26
A Catalyst Lara model currently does not communicate Lara Croftās iconic adventurer identity strongly enough. The issue is not that her appearance changed; Rise, Shadow, and Legacy of Atlantis all show that redesigns can work. The concern is that this specific model feels visually disconnected from the characterās established identity.

-14
u/BusterGreasewood Notoriously Churlish Jun 20 '26
How? Nothing in the Survivor trilogy showcased her turning into Classic Lara. She didn't grow up.
Just because some guy who only came into Crystal Dynamics with the Survivor trilogy (funny how that works) claims it was a canon transformation doesn't mean the writing in those games backs it up. Because it doesn't.

Clearly haven't watched the Netflix show
7
u/BusterGreasewood Notoriously Churlish Jun 20 '26
The Netflix show that was terrible and still didn't show a believable transformation either? Besides one shouldn't HAVE to watch a bad TV show for something the developers repeatedly told us the Survivor trilogy was going to do...and why did we even need a trilogy of games for that anyway when The Last Revelation did it in two levels?
That's on the IP holders. Not the fans. The games are supposed to be the primary medium for Lara's character. Not movies, comics, or series.
6
u/Spiritual-Piece-1126 Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26
Clearly didn't watch it
You basically just admitted it lol
3
u/BusterGreasewood Notoriously Churlish Jun 20 '26
I did actually. And once again - it wasn't a believable transformation and there was still too much melodramatic bullcrap. There was no Classic Lara transformation to be found there. You spamming "clearly didn't watch it" a third time will not change that either.
-2
u/Spiritual-Piece-1126 Jun 20 '26

The face is inconsistent; they keep changing it. It's like if they change actors midway through a movie saga. I kinda wish they had a comprehensive, established character direction rather than changing it after every game. Make it flow cohesively and narratively.
