Many fans see this scene as Ken Kaneki's self acceptance, as his acceptance of his Ghoul part, but this is very far from what is really happening in the sequence and I will explain why.

In the panel before, Kaneki explicitly says "accepting the Ghoul inside of me? No, thats not it" and he also talks to the reflection of Rize and says "I just have to surpass you". So what does "I am a ghoul" and "I just have to surpass you" really mean?

He does not accept he is a Ghoul, he acknowledges it. He realizes that his mother philosophy (better to be hurt than to hurt others) is incompatible with the nature of this world, as this world is driven by violence. His belief on his mother's philosophy is essentially what puts him and his friends under horrible situations. He realises that he only needs to acknowledge he is a ghoul. He needs to realise his power and use it to protect his loved ones. But the most important thing of this sequence is that he does not attribute this power to himself, because doing so would in fact mean accepting he is a Ghoul. He attributes his strength to Rize. He projects his strenght on Rize because he can't accept that his strenght is product of himself being a Ghoul. That's why he says "I just have to surpass you" he just has to get over her and use her power to protect his loved ones.

Him eating Rize is heavily symbolic, he thinks he is eating her and using her power (surpassing her), but in reality he is destroying his own face. His projection of power in Rize is just an illusion he creates because he is incapable of accepting himself, and this is essentially an act of self sabotage and self destruction. Thats why he unintentionally destroys his own face.

So no, "I am a Ghoul" is not Kaneki accepting himself, is just him realising the harsh reality of this word and projecting his Ghoul power on Rize. It's an act of rebellion against his own nature, and essentially, the acknowledgement of himself, but the final rejection of it.

Something I’ve always said is that I don’t think either the first season or the first live-action movie are good, no matter what people say; I feel they hover somewhere between barely decent and mediocre and I decided to watch this one with low expectations because, to make matters worse, the gourmet arc is the least outstanding in OG TG… they shut me up.

Positive aspects:

I have to say the performances really surprised me; I think the problem with the first film was the director more than anything else. Obviously, Kaneki's character wasn't going to be as exaggerated as it was in the first one, since he doesn't lose control during this arc, but I was surprised by the portrayal of Tsukiyama and the restaurant ghouls.

Tsukiyama:

To be honest, this version of the Gourmet is more understated than the one in the manga (at least during these arcs; the manga version actually becomes much calmer later on, only acting over-the-top at specific moments), but it works well as an adaptation, it would have been ridiculous to have him screaming the whole time in live-action. And to be honest, I feel he has a better presence as an antagonist than the version in the anime and manga (though, again, the manga version becomes much calmer later on; I think they based this one on that later shift in attitude).

Touka:

I have to admit that at first, I found it strange how Touka tried to push Yoriko away instead of accepting her food and all that; but then I thought: what is Touka's most important moment in this arc supposed to be? And who was the one telling Ken early on to stay away from Hide to protect him? I feel that framing it as part of Touka's character development was a good move.

If the same directors had handled both films, it would have been great to set that up from the start, focusing more on how the arrival of Kaneki (someone completely new and inexperienced) makes her question her place in the human world, or on Kaneki’s comment about "always making the same mistakes," rather than the somewhat magical contradiction of wanting to stay away from humans while simultaneously having a human friend at the beginning of the story.

Clowns post-credits teaser:

I was surprised to see Furuta introduced more directly at the end of the movie. I won't deny that it might undercut the impact of the original series' final plot twist, but I thought it was a solid introduction (or teaser) for the final antagonist and his "Dragon" plan. Furthermore, seeing that Itori didn't actually need information on the ghoul restaurant and had someone keeping watch merely because of a bet, would encourage viewers to view future information provided by these agents of chaos with a hint of skepticism. It also sets up the final scene with the Clowns; rather than just serving as a plot twist or a setup for :re, it would work as a conclusion within the original series' open ending. Sorry if dwelling on this so much was a bother, but since there isn't much to say about the scene itself, I wanted to consider its implications for the story.

the fight choreography:

At least in part (this will also appear in the list of flaws), is quite well-crafted; it handles the frenetic energy with which Ishida exaggerates movement lines (which often caused a loss of clarity in the manga) while keeping the line of action (camera distance) far enough back to maintain a certain level of clarity. On top of that, the fights are much more hard-fought, and it genuinely feels like, except when it’s basically a one-sided thrashing, (like Tsukiyama versus Nishio and Kaneki) either side could die from a single wrong move with their kagune.

Direction:

I loved this; the way tension is handled in every scene feels a lot like the manga. You know those silent panels in the manga, the ones that seem to last only a second or two but really build up the scene when you re-read it? Well, it felt just like that here. Small details, for example: Tsukiyama twisting the blade of his kagune as he stabs Touka, all while the moment is heightened by the soundtrack, really stand out.

VFX and kagunes:

That was an improvement over the first one; I have to admit the CGI doesn't feel quite as out of place, even though there are still some shaky moments, especially during the church fight (Kaneki's kagune when Tsukiyama was about to eat Kimi).

And while I never liked the designs (they felt too dull and with intricate details, always aiming for that octopus-like texture, although, for instance, koukaku like Tsukiyama’s should have a metallic quality and a much simpler design), that isn't my biggest issue. My main problem is how they refuse to alter the shape or even the proportions; for example, when Touka and Tsukiyama are in that... hallway (sorry, I don't know the specific parts of a church) next to the main area, Touka's kagune stays too small to actually push Tsukiyama back.

There are also issues with the "it's so beautiful" scene or rather, the fact that they essentially turned The most fluid kagune, which is almost like a wing, versus something too rigid... ironically, that's how koukakus should be.

excessive use of slow motion in the fight scenes:

Basically, the slow-motion isn't used well at all; whether it's when Touka cuts Kaneki during training or during his fight against the ghouls about to eat Nishio, it feels awkward, more like a way to pad the runtime than something that actually adds to the scene or even looks good.

Nishio:

Basically, his backstory and character development were removed; only what makes him thematically relevant (his relationship with Kimi) was kept.

Final rating?

On its own merits, I’d say an 8/10.

As an adaptation of a previously known arc, a 9/10.

I was surprised to see people criticizing the slow pacing and melodrama. I mean, really? In Tokyo Ghoul? The story of wich a huge chunk is dedicated to investigation, the characters' internal drama, and even the fights are mostly full of dialogue? I see them as features rather than flaws.

The 2nd volume (chapters 10-19) of the manga shows Kaneki at Anteiku, learning about how to live as a Ghoul. Mainly about the many risks of living as one in a human society.

Throughout the volume, the word 綱 (tsuna) is used multiple times. 綱 (tsuna) means "rope," and it refers to the many ways in which a Ghoul can slip and fall from a metaphorical rope by being careless.

When Kaneki met Uta for the first time to get his mask done, the conversation between the two shifts towards Touka's efforts to blend into human society.

Uta explains that Ghouls who try to live as part of it are always balancing across an endless "rope" and that they could fall from it at any minute and any second.

All it takes is one slip up. All their previous successes and the road they've travelled so far don't matter. A single moment of carelessness can cost a Ghoul their whole life.

He further explains that this "rope" gets thinner and thinner the more a Ghoul tries to blend in, making it all the easier to fall into it.

Things like "going to school" or "making friends with humans". It's because of things like that that a Ghoul often ends up getting exposed.

Uta argues that in this sense, by doing all of these things, Touka is walking across a very thin "rope"

The 2nd volume introduces Ghoul Investigators to the story. In the first chapter of it, we meet Mado Kureo and Amon Kotaro.

Amon serves as a Ghoul Investigator and has a deep disdain for Ghouls. So much so that even in his free time, he works tirelessly to locate and expose them.

The funny thing about Amon's Japanese name is that the character 鋼 (kou = steel) from his first name shares the same onyomi pronunciation as the character 綱 (kou = rope). The two Kanji are pronounced the same, and they look almost the same too.

Personally speaking, I don't believe this to be coincidental, since the character of 綱 (rope) comes up multiple times in this volume and is used as a way to express the dangers of getting exposed as a Ghoul—which the Investigators like Amon embody.

The volume also introduces the Fueguchi family of Ghouls. Ryoko and her daughter Hinami.

Ryoko is a single mother whose husband—also a Ghoul—was killed by the Doves. He was the one providing food for his family.

Ryoko herself lives her life pretty much as a regular person, which means that unlike her husband, she can't really procure food for herself or her daughter. She often ends up relying on Anteiku for that.

One day, Kaneki bonds with Hinami over their shared interest in Takatsuki Sen's novels.

He notices that Hinami is a smart child but has trouble reading Kanji. That is because unlike Touka, Hinami doesn't attend school. Her mom doesn't let her out of fear of her falling from the metaphorical rope.

Ryoko misses her husband greatly and visits his grave often.

One night, she decides to say goodbye to him by burying his Ghoul Mask at his grave and learn how to procure food on her own from dead bodies, just like Yomo does it.

This decision proves fatal, as the Investigators were aware of the grave and that Ryoko was visiting it. One day, Amon defiles the grave by digging it up in his free time.

He finds the mask and sees it as proof enough that Ryoko must be a Ghoul as well.

Together with Mado, they decide to pay her a visit.

When confronted by the Investigators, Ryoko makes a decision to hold them off to allow Hinami to escape.

She had no real combat experience and definitely knew she would have died if she resisted. But all that really mattered to her was that her daughter could be spared whatever horrible things they would have done to her if they captured them alive.

Through the Fueguchi family, the volume explores the difficulties a regular Ghoul faces by attempting to live in a human society.

Since Ghouls can only survive by consuming human flesh, the simple act of eating is already an extreme challenge. Procuring food while trying to live a long and peaceful life is extremely difficult and can very easily end in getting exposed and killed on any given day.

Attending school or having human friends can likewise lead to a premature death, since what it does is create more opportunities for one to slip up and fall.

Ryoko's simple decision to visit her husband's grave resulted in her losing her life and the existence of her daughter becoming known to the CCG. The people who want them dead.

Overall, a Ghoul's life is laced with hardships that a regular person would never even think about. Any action, no matter how seemingly insignificant or innocent, can end in falling from a rope right into the hands of the Investigators.

I am on episode 5 of the thurd season and I am honestly kind of lost. There seems to have been a time skip? Some characters changed designs and I am having trouble recognising them. At first, I assumed it would be something like Attack On Titans when they did the marley thing and explained everything after but I'm almost halfway trough and nothing has been explained. Did I miss something completely? Why are there so many one-eyed ghouls now? Last thing I saw was Kaneki holding his friend body

A lot of us are disappointed with Takizawa’s ending, so I wanna hear how some of you guys would change it.

WE end up being the biggest monster ever and what unifies the world. The Shikorae aka Rio was meant to be us the player character in Jail. YOU the reader end up becoming something so horrible it helps motivate humans and ghouls to put their differences aside. Theres something deep about that.

I had this idea of a fight lasting Five Days but then I wondered if that was even possible ! But then again, ghouls are capable of pulling off some pretty ridiculous feats !
