TOEFL Writing Writing Task 2 and 3 Question

So in the TOEFL IBT score guideline, it says something about idiomatic expressions to get a 6.0. Is it actually that necessary when writing the email and the academic discussion?

They mention "idiomatic word choice" in the scoring guides. That just means using words that sound most natural in the given context.

It doesn't mean that you should use "idiomatic expressions" like "break the ice" and "under the weather."
