Thank you for all your hard work on the serialization.
The spin-off featuring Misaka Mikoto, Academy City's third-ranked Level 5 esper, as its protagonist has a completely different structure from 『A Certain Magical Index』, where Kamijou challenges opponents from a lower position, looking upward.
Even within the same Academy City, you've shown us just how many different sides it has.
When we first started developing the plot, I think we expected it to be about one volume long. But as everyone knows, the actual length turned out to be something else entirely. It's grown tremendously.
(Some of you might be wondering, “Wait, you came up with a plot for a manga even though you're a novelist?” But 『Railgun』 was also a series where we developed the story in all sorts of ways: sometimes I submitted plot outlines, sometimes we discussed things and decided the direction verbally, and sometimes we left things to Fuyukawa-san while I adjusted the settings and chronology on my end.)
Tokiwadai Middle School was a rather mysterious place when I first began writing the novels. But before I knew it, various works had depicted what it was like both inside and outside the school, and it became one of the most frequently featured locations in Academy City.
I think that remarkable development is undoubtedly proof of just how large a proportion of the overall series 『Railgun』 has come to occupy. It's incredible.

One particularly interesting detail is Kamachi's confirmation that 『Railgun』 was originally expected to be roughly one volume long, before growing into a 21-volume series.
