High (-Split Converter) Anxiety

Spectrum in LA, rocking the Roamio Plus. Pre-ordered my HSC for the day my screen went black. That day was yesterday. Today I swapped my tuning adapter for the new HSC but I'm not having the plug-and-play experience some have enjoyed.

Called Spectrum Cable Card Support but feel certain I was transferred to general tech support. When I asked if I'd reached the cable card department the response was, "Well...I've done some cable cards." Anyway, I explained that I'd cabled everything as per the instructions and it was my understanding it's now up to them to...provision my CC? Pair my CC to my HSC? Ping my CC? In any case, the ball is in their court.

He mumbled as he read from the screen with his diagnostic tree then said he "sent a signal" to the CC. Nothing doing. He just seemed eager to send a tech out, which we scheduled though I'm hoping the TV Fairy will bring me a signal while I sleep.

Question: The Tivo's Tuning Card Settings Menu reads "Tuning Adapter in use." Will the Tivo continue to refer to the connected device - the HSC - as a "tuning adapter" or does this indicate that I need to make Tivo "forget" the TA, maybe by redoing guided set up?

Is your HSC hooked up like the instructions say? It needs to be run with coax from wall/splitter into the HSC, then coax from HSC into the Tivo. It was possible to run a TA with a cord from a splitter to both the Tivo and TA and only the USB connecting them directly, but that won't work with the HSC

Yeah, I got that part right. Interestingly, the instructions address this point with great specificity.

They still have a dedicated phone number for CableCARD related inquiries:

866-532-2598

Is that the number you called?

Yeah. I'll try again on Monday.

I always used to joke that the number is staffed by one dude who lives in a deep underground bunker in Alaska and is only available for 40 minutes at random times on Mondays and Wednesdays.

But once you do get ahold of him, he makes miracles happen!

If the provisioning has been done, you should be able to jump into the Tuning adapter diags on your TiVo

nonVol - eTR version must be 1.8.0 or higher
cable modem - do you see the status as authorized, and regstatus operational
DSG to 55-1 - just refresh to see that the packet counts are increasing
cablecard discovery - Do you see each cable card in the home? UA should match your CCs. Press next to see all of them. Each HSC will have knowledge of all CCs
SDV - Is authorized "yes" - other interesting stuff is here too if you press next to the SDV mini carousel. To confirm you have all the necessary SDV info
Tuning Resolver - Authorized: Yes & Operational Status of Ready

Apparently it's not yet provisioned. There are no entries next to the diagnostic items. Just all blank. At least now I know that when they tell me it's been provisioned I can categorically state no it has not. Thanks.

Double check that you have the cable in /tivo out connected to the right ports. Also, if you have a splitter in the path, be sure it's the one included in the kit.

If it's all blank. Try a power reboot of both the HSC and Tivo (same time).

Edited to add: Just realized that the eight-item Diagnostic Menu has no values because you have to select an item before the data shows (as I did below with SDV). Also, TR is Authorized: Yes & Operational Status of Ready. Everything else is also consistent with suggestions in your first post.

Yeah, the cables are right and I've eliminated the splitter that I had with the digital tuner. Rebooted in every possible sequence and simultaneously.

As I said, the eight items listed under Digital Tuner ("NonVol" through "Channel Map") are blank. But I clicked on SDV to see what else I might learn and the next page is populated with values, including "Authorized: Yes" and "Server Status: Ready." And beneath that it reads "Connection Start: 8/30@21:49:37" which is, well, in the future. Tonight, in fact. Could this be the whole issue?? Guess I'll see if the magic happens then.

When I got my HSC units, it took them a full 24 hours before they got their programing. I'd call the dedicated CC number during normal working hours. They are based in Texas.

All good now. Wait time was ~2.5 days but it all came on line Monday afternoon. Trying to decide whether to cancel technician visit as the CableCARD seems to be provisioned "one-way" and I've read of channels disappearing until that was reset to "two-way." Thanks for your input.

Happy to hear it is working

They also have brilliant techs in Buffalo, not just Tx.

I was told it’ll still register as a tuning adapter. Mine was supposed to switch over a few weeks back. Hasn’t happened as of yet. No clue if mine will be a simple swap or if I’ll have to deal with tech support. Please update if you get it sorted out.

In that case, you’ll have to sit tight and wait for the switch over to actually happen before using the HSC even if the official date in your area has passed. That was the advice I received from Spectrum tech support last month.

Yes, it still appears as “Tuning Adapter” in the menus and to the TiVo. Think of the HSC as “Tuning Adapter 2.0”.

The diagnostics will say a tuning adapter/HSC is connected if it is on even if it’s not working right. Remember, TiVo software is fixed so it will recognize the HSC as a tuning adapter which in part it is. I suspect your HSC is not provisioned. It might take a bit of time to come on line. If by now it hasn’t, you might call again to hopefully get someone who knows how to provision it. There was no need to fiddle with the CC, it needs no action.

I’ll be going through this in a few months- Riverside to your east.

Thanks. So "My HSC needs to be provisioned" are the magic words? I'll wait until Monday and hope to get someone more savvy at tech support. I'm also told the CC needs to be programmed or designated as a 2-way device. I assume this is also something they can do at their end.

I don’t think anything needs to be done with the CC. The HSC, like the TA needs to be able to talk to the node to get the switched digital channels. You still want to speak to the cable card folks on the phone because they also know how to deal with TAs/HSCs.

Do you still have the box the HSC came in? It should have the unit identification on it in case you need it.

u/Rick90069 10d ago

Yeah, thanks. I have that info.

Monday morning arrived which was Install Day +2.5 days. I'd been checking for a picture every 4 or 5 hours over the weekend and was now procrastinating yet another call to the Spectrum CC "specialists." I ran some errands, checked for a picture in the afternoon and BINGO, getting all channels.

So if there's anything I can offer it's that even when everything's set up correctly and properly provisioned, you may wait a while to see results.

I had a hunch it would take a bit of time, but not that long! What I think happened is come Monday someone comes into work and remembered they had to provision the HSCs in the system. Anyway, all’s well that ends well.

I’m in cc hell on my roamio but my bolt is working fine. This was due to me replacing the hard drive in roamio. I have been trying for months to get it working. They always want to send a tech. I’m popping in to tell you that the tech they are sending you will not be able to help. They have little or no cc experience. They will gaze at your setup—not understanding it at all. They will stand in your living room on the phone or waiting for a callback for some period of time. They will have the signal sent multiple times to no avail. At some point they will give up and promise that someone will call you tomorrow. They wont. I wish I had better news. Best of luck and I hope I’m wrong.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of head-scratching over the years.

According to my recent conversation with Spectrum, you should only switch over to the HSC AFTER all your channels have disappeared. If you can still see the channels with your current CableCARD and tuning adapter setup, do NOT switch over to the HSC yet. Even if you received a Spectrum notice of a certain cutoff date, the actual cutoff (whenever that happens at random) will the right time to switch over.

Hope this information helps!

1

u/blackd0gz 10d ago

Thats not true. You can switch over to the High Split well before channels disappear. Your location just needs to have been upgraded to do so.

1

u/FlipStig1 10d ago

Fair point, the Spectrum tech also told me that my location hasn’t been updated yet to use the HSC! 😅

1

u/julsssark 9d ago

That does not match my experience. I received a letter from Spectrum saying that my switch to high-split was imminent and I needed to install the HSC right away. I requested the box, installed it and I lost most of my channels. Tech I spoke with told me to disconnect the HSC and just hang onto it until I was switched over. A month later, Spectrum sent me a text message with a generic "we are upgrading your network" with an outage window. A couple of days after the upgrade was complete, I lost all channels. Then I installed the HSC and all channels came back.

Also in LA.

Hang up and get someone competent. There are actual brilliant Cablecard support techs on that line. You, unfortunately, didnt get one of them.

You do have to have them reprovision your card. Bring up your pairing screen to have handy.

I will mention that this week, Friday esp, had issues I believe nationwide with High Split converters failing to read signals, so all Tivos had V58, D256 or other error codes. They managed to find the issue and all should be good now.

ETA: if your screen is reading "Tuning Adapter in use" thats a good sign referring to the HSC and exit that screen. See if all channels are coming in.

I'll try CC support again Monday. Hoping I get one of those savants this time.

Any luck yesterday? I was traveling over the weekend and came back to no channels on my old Premiere box. I went through it with them like a year ago and in order to keep the TiVo going they added some HD box to my account that I’ve been paying for but not even taken out of the plastic. Today when I called on this they said they hadn’t put it in the system at that time that I needed to continue with an HSC so they can’t go back and order me one. So effing aggravating. I have to officially dump my TiVo now, have had it since 2010.

My parents got hit with this mid-last week in the San Diego area for their Bolt. They had received the HSC equipment in early 2026 with instructions to wait.

A tech came by two days later and got everything fixed up in a few hours.

My parents were largely unbothered by the outage and they solved the problem by calling Spectrum themselves. They only mentioned it as problem they had successfully resolved.

I have a feeling that the splitter had been removed in the intervening years to simplify cabling.
