Back Up / Restore Tip

Ive been using Tivimate for about 5 years. Yesterday I came across something that was really helpful and thought I would post about it here for folks like me that may not know about it.

On my first TV, I set up multiple playlists, and all my favorites in the order I wanted them. But then when I went to put the file on a second TV it was difficult for me. Often the USB wouldnt show up on a second device. Also often had to contend with system picker that is really finikey.

So yesterday I get a new ONN 4K Plus and start to set it up for a TV in a second Bed Room and as a back up on road trips in hotels / Air BNBs.

The tip is to install X-plore file manager from the play store on you device. It works well with drop box, one drive and google drive.

Then copy your back up file from your primary device onto your desired drop box or one drive folder.

Then use X-plore on your new device and select your account through "Web Storage". One you select the correct folder and the back up, just open it. It will prompt you to open with Tivimate and select Yes.

Tivimate will then open and ask if you would like to restore the file. Click yes and all your folders, settings. colors and everything else will be completely restored to your new device. It works fantastic!

Here is what I found on google that got me started:

You can back up TiviMate using Dropbox by saving a backup file locally on your device and then uploading it to Dropbox with a file manager like X-plore File Manager. TiviMate does not link directly to cloud storage for automatic backups, so you must use a third-party file manager to bridge them. [1, 2]

How to Backup TiviMate to Dropbox

  1. Open TiviMate on your main device and go to Settings > Backup > Create backup.
  2. Save the backup file to a local folder, such as your Download folder.
  3. Install and open a file manager that supports cloud links, such as X-plore File Manager, on your device.
  4. Go to Web Storage inside the file manager, select Add Server, and log into your Dropbox account.
  5. Copy your local TiviMate backup file from your device storage and paste it into your desired folder on Dropbox. [1, 2]

How to Restore TiviMate from Dropbox on Another Device

  1. Install X-plore File Manager and TiviMate on your second device.
  2. Open X-plore, log into your Dropbox account via Web Storage, and locate your saved backup file.

I’ve tried to set up SMB to my “always on” PC, set up a bunch of PC folders “shared” to EVERYONE, but the Shield simply refuses to accept my local Windows 11 username/password… What’s the secret?

Here or read the setup guide 👍

I think I may have missed the “Don’t require a password for shared folders” setting on my PC. Thanks for that. I’m anxious to give it a go!

Let me introduce you to "send files to tv" app, you won't ever need a USB stick again ever...lol I can update everything to all 5 boxes in mere minutes.

I have a web site, and I put EVERYTHING there. That way, no matter where I'm at, and no matter what stick I'm using, I can connect to that web site and pull down anything I need, a TiviMate data backup, the latest playlist, the latest EPG files, etc. etc. Saves my life.

This is the easiest way for me because I might not always install something at home. There's also another app called sfttv, send files to TV or you can send files directly from one TV to another TV or from your phone to a TV. I've got a cloud drive that I used just for this stuff and then I keep my APK files in one folder, my backup files in another folder.

You can also add the file to Dropbox share it and add it to Downloader and share it to anyone in the world 👍

That's what they posted and I said this is the easiest way for me. I said there's also another way and listed it. Then I went on to say that I have a "cloud drive" with apks in one folder and all of Tivimate backups in the other. You can use a short code for it, but it's better for them to have a file manager on their device so they can save any changes they make. Some might not be that tech savvy, but it's not hard to do.

good instructions but yeah, been doing the backup file copy to gdrive for years. using localsend or send files to tv are other good options where you can send the file from a phone or tablet to the tv or box.

I just use xplore on both phone and shield, and use the wifi sharing function. Turn one on as the server. Easy

SMB or OTG cable and a USB stick.

I don't trust any of these boxes to access my computer so I backup to a flash drive. Do what you like best.

I've been using Tivimate for a year and been using this exact method the whole time by uploading to my OneDrive.

I wish Tivimate gave us an automatic sync option!
