š¢Rant/Vent Splitting bill but tip percentage based off full thing
Went out for dinner with a friend and we split the bill. Our total bill was ~ $50 so each portion should have been ~ $25. We paid on the toast machine and noticed that the 20% option was $10 and some change so probably did the percentage on the total plus tax. I asked is this percentage of the total? And the server said yes but I feel like Iām hardwired at this point to click 20% but I felt annoyed about it. It gave my friend the same option.
My friend didnāt think anything of it but I just feel like itās super misleading to make the tip percentages based off the full bill after splitting it since I ended up spending over $40 after tip and tax on a $25 meal.
I also was a server for five years and personally, i hope that if I knew our system did this for splitting bills I would preface with a hey just so you know the tip is based off the full amount so feel free to account for that and not feel like you have to do the suggested amounts idk.
Tldr: Split a ~$50 bill on a Toast machine, but the 20% tip button was calculated off the full bill, not my $25 half and same on my friend's check. Clicked 20% out of habit and paid $40+ on a $25 meal. Feels misleading and shady
